  • O holy night, the stars are brightly shining; / It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth! / Long lay the world in sin and error pining, / Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth. / A thrill of hope, the weary soul rejoices, / For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. / Fall on your knees, O hear the angel voices! / O night divine, O night when Christ was born! / O night, O holy night, O night divine! Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, / With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand. / So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, / Here came the wise men from Orient land. / The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger, / In all our trials born to be our Friend! / He knows our need—to our weakness is no stranger. / Behold your King; before Him lowly bend! / Behold your King; before Him lowly bend! Truly He taught us to love one another; / His law is love and His Gospel is peace. / Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother / And in His Name all oppression shall cease. / Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, / Let all within us praise His holy Name! / Christ is the Lord! O praise His name forever! / His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim! / His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim! Words by Placide Cappeau; translated from French to English by John S. Dwight (1812-1893). Created in xenoDream; lettering and lens flare added in Photoshop.

  • This is a photo of a painting I did in Pastels for my church last Christmas. It was enlarged to 12 ft. tall and printed out onto a translucent surface and illuminated from behind to simulate a stain glass window. I hope you enjoy this and may you have a Christmas filled with peace and joy!

  • Each Christmas Eve we would gather round the tree adorned with pocorn and cranberry-strewn garland, beautiful big bulbs, magical colored lights and globs of tinsel too thick to render a real work of art. Dad would open the Bible to Luke and read the story we loved- all about that night of heavenly light when Jesus Christ was born in a lowly stable. We wondered in awe with the shepherds at this miracle of miracles; that God would send His only begotten Son into this world to love us, teach us and eventually die for us- that our sins might be forgiven, that we might someday return to live with Him eternally in never-ending happiness. It was more than a story to us. We were children. We had faith. We believed. Over all these many years, as we trim the tree and gaze at the Nativity underneath..and as we read- again and again, of this night of all nights so many years ago, we understand He is the Light that shone that night. He is the Love that fills our hearts and saves us from ourselves. We still believe and wrap ourselves in the wonder and miracle of Him. “Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King!” from Joy to the World by Isaac Watts, 1719

  • Graphite on illustration board. My Christmas greeting, 2002. The infant is drawn from a reference photo I took of my son’s first Christmas, 6 weeks. He’s now 21 years old. :) Inspired by the Christmas song of the same title, written by Chris Rice. The grapes and wheat are symbolic of the Eucharist, and the holly head wreath symbolic of the crown of thorns and crucifixion. I made this image for our parish church to use for printed Christmas materials. • One of my all-time favorite Christmas images is the Kneeling Santa. I love it because it’s a much-needed reminder of just who Santa was—St. Nicholas, a 4th Century Bishop of Myra (present-day Turkey). Born into an affluent family, Nicholas was never attached to his wealth but gave generously to the poor, perhaps the most noted example being the time he saved three sisters from being sold into slavery by their destitute father who did not have the money needed for their wedding dowries. Nicholas went to their home and secretly left bags of money on three consecutive nights, enough for the sisters’ dowries, enough to save them from enslavement. Later in Nicholas’ life, he was imprisoned by the Emperor Diocletian who persecuted Christians. Since the 11th Century, his remains have been carefully preserved at the Basilica of St. Nicholas in Bari, Italy. In the 1950’s scientific experiments were conducted on the remains by anatomy professor Luigi Martino who reported from his findings that the person in question was an older man, 6 foot 5 inches tall, and very likely someone who had spent time in a damp jail, judging from the condition of the bones. In more recent years, Francesco Introna, professor of forensic pathology, did extensive studies on the skull and with the help of facial anthropologist, Dr. Caroline Wilkinson, fashioned a replica of what the person’s face would have looked it. Amazingly, it was very similar to traditional images of St. Nicholas done by iconographers. Introna and Wilkinson also discovered that the man under study had suffered a broken nose, which lined up with the historical data which indicated St. Nicholas had been tortured while in prison under Diocletian. (Information gleaned from “Better than Santa Claus” by Louise Perrotta; The Word Among Us; Advent 2008). Whatever the case, it is certain that St. Nicholas was a devout Christian, that he lived and died for Christ, and that had he been given the chance to be in the manger of Bethlehem, he undoubtedly would have knelt in love and adoration for the Christ Child. Hence, my deep love for this image. I bought this small statue recently, photographed the kneeling Santa adoring the Christ Child, and with PhotoShop came up with this rendition. Even Santa would agree that Jesus truly IS the reason for the season; it is His birthday, and He deserves our remembrance on His day just as any of us do on our date of birth. Merry Christmas to all!

  • 4So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. / Luke 2: 4-7 / Photograph of a sculpture in a memorial garden ~ San Diego, CA /
