  • Near Thokla with yaks (dzho) and the jagged peak of Cholatse 6335m, Nepal.

  • Taboche Peak 6367m rises majestically from the floor of the valley of the Lobuche Khola River in the Nepalese Himalayas. To the right is Cholatse with her 6335m peak just in the clouds. At the foot of the valley above the village of Pheriche rises the twin peaks of Kangtega 6685m with Thamserku 6608m to her right. The fresh snow fell deep in the valley the night before. These mountains are some of the world’s most famous and the Sagarmatha National Park is their home.

  • These mountains are so high and so jagged that they cast strange sharp shadows onto clouds in the early and late hours of the day. These particular morning shadows are cast by Arakamtse, Cholatse, and Tawoche (left to right), as viewed from Machhermo.

  • Trekking back down the Imja Drengka valley, the massive peaks of Tawoche, Cholatse and Arakamtse erupt out of the Earth like giant breaching leviathans.

  • At the head of the Cholatse Khola valley is this rock-face peering into the fog, smiling almost.

  • At the head of the Cholatse Khola valley is this rock-face peering into the fog. Again, faces in the rock, ice and snow formations continue to suggest a great presence. The mountains are alive.

  • Looking down the valley of Cholatse Khola towards the stunningly beautiful Ama Dablam. This is our first view of Ama Dablam for the trek, as we come down from the Cho La Pass.

  • Ama Dablam rises to 6814m through the afternoon cloud the rolls up the Khumbu Valley. Or perhaps it’s just a cloud with distinct edges, and solid. Featured in “Mountains and Mountain Light”.

  • After the sun sets, Venus continues to shine and help light up the cloud flowing into the Imja valley. The strong stark silhouettes of Tawoche, Cholatse and Arakamptse rise into the dusk sky, seen from Island Peak Base Camp (5150m). This panorama is a composite image of 3 photos taken with a Canon 400D.

  • Looking west-south-west from the top of the ice-wall on Island Peak towards Ama Dablam. To the right of the fram you can see Twoche, Cholatse and Arakamptse.
