2009 is the year of the ox. If you were born in 1913 1925 1937 1949 1961 1973 1985 1997 or 2009, then you are an ox. According to Chinese astrology, your traits are: “Those born under the influence of the Ox are fortunate to be stable and persevering. The typical Ox is a tolerant person with strong character. Not many people could equal the resolution and fearlessness the Ox exhibits when deciding to accomplish a task or an objective. As we used this great creature long ago to plow the soil day after day, so do Ox people labor through their daily responsibilities either at work or at home without complaint or gripe. Oxen know they will succeed through hard work and sustained effort and find no truth or benefit in concocting get-rich-quick schemes.” *That little Chinese character under the 2009 is the word for “ox”.
It is about time to celebrate Chinese new year, and here is my first attempt in incorporating elements from traditional chinese paintings to my works.
Celebrating Chinese New Year 2009 / Year of the Ox / (officially takes place Monday 1/26) Sharpie, Photoshop
Taken January 25, in a hutong in the very center of Beijing. Digital, as is. Tomorrow, January 26th, is Chinese New Year (Spring Festival). Traditionally most celebrating activities take place in the night before New Year. Then, many people shoot off firecrackers everywhere in the city. It’s the night’s spectacular. The very loud sound of firecrackers fills the city. And fireworks light up the night sky. This celebration always lasts from evening till small hours. However this year the sound is not so intensive, probably because of economic reason.
January 26 is Chinese New Year. In past years, I have cooked supper for my family on Mardi Gras but in the last couple of years we have gathered for Chinese New Year. Because of conflicting schedules this is set to happen on February 7th but I am already planning the meal. These placemats and chopsticks were a gift from one of the girls on my staff last year, having gone home to China for five weeks to visit her family. Sold as business card design in April 2009 Also available on Zazzle including as a business card for restaurants with an Asian based theme front / back

The Peacock Empress is a drawing created a couple of days ago, while at the surgery with my daughter, i had a vision of it which impressed strongly in my mind, and i was able to draw it once I got home. The idea was the Empress was rising up over the waters. There’s lots of symbolism in this, but it’s purely for my own benefit and the viewer may decide how the symbolism relates to them…the colour has been done in Photoshop. She has almost taken on the look of an oriental style “Luna Park” entrance at twilight, might be a nice design for those who celebrate “Chinese New Year” and/or collectors of asian inspired/related art
