/ / She Sells Sea Cards by the Sea Shore / A short story by iAN Derrick with illustrations by Karin Taylor (me)!! Karin’s storefront iAN’s storefront This has been an amazing experience to be a part of….an enormous thank you to Matt Mawson who has tirelessly and generously worked over the past 2 days to bring this little book into being….. I could never have done it without you Matt! And of course a huge thank you to the amazing writer and friend of mine, one of those great Aussie characters that just keeps on keeping on, keeps on getting better with age…. that is iAN Derrick I first met iAN through a journal Matt wrote about one of iAN’s books, and since that day, we sorta hit it off….. I talked to iAN about my father and he also was inspired to write another short story called Understanding Harry and correct me if i’m wrong, but i think he may have been inspired to write a story that reflected some of the goings on with Matt’s four legged friend also. One day I got an email from the amazing iAN, saying although he thought my father should be the one to tell and publish his own stories, he’d had a little idea and brought it to life in Understanding Harry and not long after this i received a second email saying that he’d done it again, but i would have to wait til the morning when he loaded the story to red bubble, and he and I and hubby all savoured the moment….....waiting with baited breath, until upon waking in the morning two days ago, I was thrilled to discover this wonderful story had been written. A story about my characters…involved a certain Mrs T….but i will tell you no more, as it’s a must read…and you can read it over here She Sells Sea Cards by the Sea Shore Thank you iAN and Thank you Matt i am eternally grateful

The Daily Wrap - Book Publishing
by Karin TaylorHey everyone, Well it’s a green light… we are going to publish a little book together…iAN Derrick...
Hey everyone, Well it’s a green light… we are going to publish a little book together…iAN Derrick and myself. The book is called Sea Sells Sea Cards by the Sea Shore and is such a delightful tale, with a beautiful message and really worthy of being published! The story is based on some of my characters, which is how the collaboration has come to be… iAN has written the story and some of my artwork will be used to illustrate the story. Briefly, it’s about a lady called Mrs T (lol) who takes a group of her characters on a picnic down by the sea…on a little journey of discovery! Also, thanks to Matt Mawson we made it into the Daily Wrap today!!! Thank you so much Matt for your wonderful support of this project!!! Thanks to the kind hearted Matt Mawson who is helping us with the technical side of making the book. It will be available in hard and soft cover in the not too distant future, and we’ll be sure to let everyone know when it is.

I feel bile rise in my throat and am crippled with utter disgust at the treatment of these children branded as witches in Nigeria. It cuts me to the core to learn that it happens here in the UK too! Innocence is fragile and short lived – a gift to children to enjoy before the world of man that we created lays claim to them. It is the ultimate obligation of all adults to allow this innocence to last for as long as it will and to allow the flame of optimism, compassion, trust, dignity and honour to burn bright within the children so that it stays with them throughout life. That Helen Ukpabio and the other profiteering “prophets” of Nigeria are not suffering in deep cells, denied their freedom and revealed to their mislead followers as the beasts that they are for this vile promotion of child torture, abuse, abandonment and murder – in the name of god – is a fact I will struggle to understand. Stop it happening now! “ I think my Daddy’s going to die” she said. I had found her standing by herself staring out the glass door at the back of my house, maybe watching the trees, maybe not really seeing anything. “I know, sweety” I said. “Your Daddy is very sick, and he might die, but they are trying to fix him at the hospital” / I did not know what else to say. Her big brown eyes fixed on mine, unblinking. / “It’s because of the alcohol, he drinks too much alcohol”. Stunned, I did not know what to say. For a child so young, she had seen too many things, and had worked out a lot for herself. “Two drinks is okay” she said, wisely nodding to herself “but more than that makes you sick. It’s not good to have more than that.” My heart broke for her. Yet she did not seem sad. Somehow, that was what made it worse. She was totally accepting of the situation, it was like it was an everyday experience to be taken on, worked though and discarded. For me, the whole situation had shocked me and filled me with grief. / I had followed the ambulance from town, on my way home from work. The sight of an ambulance, lights flashing, on its way along the highway towards my farm home, was an unusual one, and it filled me with dread. / “Please turn off. Please don’t be someone in my family” I silently prayed as I drove behind it. There were not many homes along that stretch of road, as it was mainly farmland. I felt ashamed for hoping it was someone other than my family. Then the ambulance turned into my neighbour’s driveway. / My heart thumped. A young couple with young kids – not a good sign; worse still, a man who had succumbed to depression after losing his mother, his grandmother and a friend in the past year, and more recently having lost his job and dealing with relationship troubles. I had felt his pain before and it was vast. These were people I cared about, I so desired to help, yet it seemed impossible to know where to begin. Sometimes friendship seems such a small and helpless thing against the demons that haunt people’s lives Neighbours were running across the paddock at the sight of the ambulance. The son stood at the door, white face, showing the ambos in and leading them to…… A man, OD’d on the bedroom floor. Purple… foaming at the mouth ………… dying. The fourteen year old boy, traumatized, quivering in shock, tells me had been at home with his little sister and the phone had rung. He had taken it up to his stepdad’s room to give him the call, and found him like that. His eyes were haunted, the tears quivered right there, he all but broke down and I prepared myself to hug him, but then something hauled him back and he blocked it. His Mum was home now, it would be all right. “Help me get your little sister’s clothes and school things” I said to him, “and she can come home with me for the night. I will take care of her and get her to school tomorrow. That will make it easier for your Mum”. The little girl was wandering around the house totally oblivious to the drama unfolding, telling everyone who would listen / “My daddy hurt himself. He had an accident.” The boy handed me a school bag and one pair of pants. He could not focus, could not think. He did not know what to do. I told him I would take care of it, give his sister my own daughter’s clothes….it would be okay. I asked if he would like to come with us, but he said no. He wanted to stay with his Mum. I wanted to hug him, but he had a barrier up that seemed to preclude anyone coming close to comfort him. I plucked up the courage and walked back up to the bedroom. I did not look down. I tried to block the sight of the ambulance officers, working on the body on the floor. I caught the eye of the woman, my friend and neighbour, and just said “I am taking your daughter home with me, to help you out…..” But she did not hear, her face white and distressed staring blankly across the room at me. So the little girl happily got in my car as if it was the greatest adventure ever. She was the same age as my daughter and they were school friends. All she could think about was staying with Maya. It was going to be fun. I was amazed at the resilience of small children, how they could seemingly shed the horror of things they had witnessed and just play. What a blessing it was that they could “just play”. I was holding back tears and shock at what had just taken place in that home, yet this little girl could only think about what fun she was going to have. But now, a few hours later, she had played for a while, the novelty was over, and reality had set in. She had wandered to a place by herself as her little mind tried to come to terms with what was happening. “I think my Daddy’s going to die”.

Well a little while ago I let you know that I would be busy for a while and there was some drama going on that I needed to handle but couldn’t get into at the time. / I don’t know how many people will be interested in reading this and I hope it doesn’t come off as a whining session, but I did promise an update when I felt it was safe for me to do so…....so here it is. / I was married to a great guy, we were best friends and shared everything, about 7 years into the marriage things started to change, he stopped telling me things, got very distant and would rarely but ocassionaly lose his temper with the children, slapping them around. He started to be suspicious of every little thing we did and expected the children to instinctively know and follow the rules (or comply as he would say…a handy little word he picked up with his job) As the years passed the loss of temper became more and more with the kids, and with me it was mental beatings, I’m worthless, won’t amount to anything, not worth the time…..you know keeping me down as low as possible. / I was terrified of how I would take care of four children on my own, especially someone so worthless as myself but warned him anyway to get a handle on that temper or it was over. He lost it again and I said I wanted a divorce, he threatned to kill himself and that the children would blame me for the rest of their lives for his death….....so I stayed and tried yet again to make it work, but one night he lost his temper again and I called the police. ............ok ok this ‘update’ is getting way to long….......we’ve been apart since the fall of 2001. Last year my oldest son Nathaniel wanted to go live with him and was getting violent at home with his brothers, it was the hardest decision of my life but in the end I let him go. Then on Nick’s birthday (my youngest) my ex’s girlfriend almost drowned Kristopher my 12 yr old. Threw him in the water over his head while he was screaming at her that he couldn’t swim and begging her to put him down. :( Later on the same day, my ex held Nate underwater, then when they got back to his place he put Kris in a headlock after chasing him down, when Nate tried to help his brother my ex punched Nate in the face and let go of Kris to go after Nate, that gave them the chance to run off and hide for a while. / So in this time I’ve been gone, I’ve been trying to get custody of Nathaniel back without my ex knowing to much about it for fear of how he would react to the children telling me what had happened that day. / The papers came in the mail yesterday, I have all my children back with me where they belong, safe and sound at last. / So I want to thank you all for being so patient with me and even though you didn’t know what was going on or what the drama was, you supported me and help give me the strength to get through yet another of life’s hurdles. / Thank you so much

This morning….it wasn’t a Lawn Mower that woke me up at the crack of dawn…it was a bloody WHIPPER SNIPPER!....Those things….like ungrateful people (in particular spoilt little children)....should be banned :| Yesterday…I went Christmas Shopping :| And there is still over two weeks to go. I don’t have children to buy for….only my parents and a small handful of friends. If you have children to buy for….how in the hell do you do it…without spending an absolute fortune? I’m going to stick my little pin in Christmas…just a little prick. I’m not going to say I had it like my Dad did…as a child growing up. I mean he walked 100miles a day to school with no shoes on! And for a penny he bought bags of fruit as Christmas Presents! Ha! No…...My Christmases weren’t quite as tough ;) My Mum hand-made my clothes for Christmas, we were given beach balls, buckets and spades, books and anything useful enough to keep us outside for long periods of time :| Nothing Technical…nothing Electronic….nothing that had us sitting on our arses for any given time. / When somebody says to me ‘What do you want for Christmas?’...like every year..I say ‘Nothing money can buy’ ;) Oh!....In January…we..the bubblers of The Gold Coast and Brisbane which equals the mighty Queensland ;).. are getting together for a day of fun and frivolity and whatever else may happen on the day, which could be interesting The day is being organized by / Melissa Vowell / If anyone is interested in joining us…On January 13th..I think we have the date set for?....which is a Sunday. Contact Melissa or myself and we will try and fit you in…Ha! ;) You know you want to :| Luv!

I’ve had many a RedBubbler asking me for advice about becoming a children’s book illustrator. Rather than write to the individual, I thought I’d post the information for all the read. In 1998, I decided to become a children’s book illustrator, I learnt the hard way! – It took me two years to get my first picture book published (apparently this was fast going). I would like to share some of my knowledge with fellow Redbubblers, in the hope that your success as a published artist will be an easier journey than mine. All I ask is that you share with me your success stories. Preparing your work for publishers is the first, and most important step for getting noticed by publishers. Portfolio Tips / - Show uniform, quality colour copies on an easy A4 or A3 format. / - Make your portfolio light weight and easy to carry or mail out / - Label your portfolio / - Don’t show originals EVER! / - Don’t show more than one style / - Do show colour and BW work / - Do show one or two samples of finished sketch / - Do make sure the image reflect subject matter appropriate for children (parents, grandparent, animals, interior/exterior scenes. / - Do give each image its own space. One image per spread, unless it is a series of images. / - Include 12-18 pieces in your portfolio. Fewer don’t show enough. More can be too much to take in. It’s better to have 10 pieces of WOW! Than 20 pieces of so so. Visit bookstores and Libraries. Read and study the latest releases, award winners and the classics. You’ll learn from other illustrators, get ideas, get a feel for how plots are constructed and how characters are developed or the rhyme and pacing of a picture book text. Enjoy the research! Perfect your craft and don’t submit until your work is its best. Compare your work to published illustrators. Can you improve? Really step back from your work and ask yourself. Does my work measure up? Join a critique group. Don’t ask friends what they think. Be patient, learn from rejection, and don’t give up. Thousands of manuscripts and illustration samples land on editors desks. They are so many factors that come into play when evaluating submissions. You might not hear back from publishers immediately. Persistence and patients go with the job. As Winsten Churchill put it “Success is going from failure to failure without any loss of enthusiasm”. All the best and good luck my fellow RedBubblers! Nina
