Adam's Lament

Adam and Eve’s desire to eat from the Tree, in my opinion, is in many ways similar to how kids are when they talk about how badly they want to grow up. It’s not until you actually get what you think you want that you look back and realize that the grass isn’t really greener on the other side. Children, in some ways, seem so much wiser because they are so innocent and pure – which is why you kind of smile wryly to yourself when you see how badly they want to lose that part of themselves, like, “Oh man, if you kids only knew how life can be as a grown up… in some ways you’ll wish you had never found out.” Most kids seem just fine the way they are before the desire for “real” life gets a chance to overcomplicate things and mess them up. Such was the case with Adam and Eve. There’s a great paradox for you – eating a fruit that would give them knowledge was actually the stupidest thing anyone could have ever done, and we are still feeling the side effects of it, thousands of years later.
