Chefchaouen is a city in northwest Morocco. It is the chief town of the province of the same name. Chefchaouen is situated in the Rif Mountains, just inland from Tangier and Tetouan. The city was founded in 1471, as a small fortress which still exists to this day, by Moorish exiles from Spain to fight the Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco. It was known as one of the main concentrations of Moriscos and Jews who sought refuge in this mountainous city after the Spanish Reconquista in medieval times. In 1920, the Spanish seized Chefchaouen to form part of Spanish Morocco. They returned the city after the independence of Morocco in 1956. The name ‘Chefchaouen’ refers to the shapes of the mountain tops that tower over the town, that look like the two horns (chaoua) of a goat. It literally means “look at the horns”. The blue-rinsed houses and buildings, are a tradition that comes from the town’s former Jewish population. Here is another image taken today. To me, converse sneakers are the epitome of youth and they never seem to go out of fashion.. My parents wore them, I wore them and now my sons and daughter are already wearing them (by the way.. these were my pair of ‘connies’ which now my son is wearing). I just liked the way they portray youth and although each generation think they are better than the last; I think fundamentally they always stay the same.

My daughter Zoe painted this when she had just turned 5, she is now 6. She is an amazing artist. Zoe and I will often have painting days together. She once told me “Why can’t I paint as well as you?” I was shocked and turned to her and said “Zoe, everyone’s style is different and your artwork is amazing – I wish I could paint like you!” People think I’ve taught Zoe how to paint but what people don’t understand is she has taught me more!! So I hope others enjoy her work as much as I do. I wanted to make a profile on here for her but because she is under 16 I wasn’t able to so I thought I would add a few pieces to mine which has really made her day – she is eagerly awaiting feedback :)

Yep. This is me about 40 years ago. And yes, I didn’t smile much. Not then. I had a speech impediment – a bad one. My father was a police officer at the time. Didn’t make me popular; not in the sixties. Not in a neighborhood like the one I grew up in, one surrounded by public housing and an ever increasing racial tension. He had left us years earlier and rarely saw us. And on one of the few occasions he ‘graced’ us with his presence, it was in uniform. Way to go dad. I hated him for that. To protect mysef I turned inward and begun to lose myself there. I had few friends, and even fewer emotions. I pretty much only had one. Apathy. I didn’t care anymore. I had learned that to care meant to hurt. After years of speech therapy and moving to the coast five years later. I learned something else. I learned that not all children are cruel. I learned that I loved horses and the freedom of going places my feet never could. I learned that I was never alone, not even in my thoughts. And it was okay. It was okay to talk different, to think different, to be different. And now, forty years on, I learned finally that its okay to be….me. I look at this picture and cry. I mourn for all those years I lost because others convinced me I wasn’t good enough, I wasn’t normal, and I wasn’t loved. But those tears quickly fade. They were wrong. They were all wrong. I am good enough. I am normal. And I am loved. Okay…I may be stretching it with the ‘normal’ part. (Author’s prerogative) I titled this ‘little girl lost’. But don’t worry. I found her. And she’s doing just fine.
