Because Easter is approaching I thought it appropriate :) The child’s sustenance, or umbilical cord if you like is coming from a tree, symbolic of the healing that nature can bring….the new life and growth that comes with nurture both of spirit and of nature. Humility is understanding our rightful place in the scheme of all things, including nature, family structure and the wider community…... a world where there is tolerance for all, is the one i pray for

/ (Mocha timber frame/off white matt/medium size) / Greeting Card hand drawn on paper / digital painting Legend of Little Geisha / art and story by K Taylor (4/09) In the village of Ishekawa by the Sea of Japan lived a poor couple who wove and carved for a living. The couple had no real possessions but were content with the beauty of the mountains and the sea surrounding them, and happy to be together. The only thing they wished for and did not yet have, was a child to call their own. One day, an ancient crone visited their home and as always, the couple offered their hospitality, gave her rice cakes and sake to warm her belly. The old crone, in return for their kindness, bestowed upon the couple the ability to have a girl child. The child grew from a seed into a strong and beautiful young woman, glowing with pride and joy, she was the delight of Ishekawa by the Sea of Japan, and many young suitors came to visit and pay her homage. But as is the way with old crones, you can never quite trust them to do you a favour without some twist in the tale. Unfortunately, the seed from which the child grew, began to sprout roots, and she was bound to the earth. In time the beautiful young girl became a majestic tree and all the birds from near and far came to perch and nest in her branches, she gave them shelter from the wind and rain, and everyone who knew the legend realised the tree was actually the Little Geisha. / here’s the drawing (above) prior to being digitally coloured

costume pearls, cut out print of drawing, print, wrapped and archival glued – on 1” thick plywood Last year I participated in a local benefit exhibition where the artists are given 12×12” blank plywood boards and we can embellish them as we desire. I wrapped a portion of one of my prints of my drawing Autumn’s Child/Mon Ange on the board, cut out another one of it to create the “mask” of her – and added fake pearls to looks as if the drawing was popping out of itself and to tie all the elements together. (I was so lucky to go to my magic drawer and discover this long strand in there that were the exact diameter of the drawing’s. They are costume and come from sewing items that were my Grandmother Alvina’s.) FEATURED in IMAGEWRITING GROUP / FEATURED in ETHNIC ART Back in the 80’s when I lived in a suburb of Vancouver BC, I did a series of drawings for a long distance truck driver who had a real love for what he called “cowboy art” and the history of the native tribes of North America. It piqued my interest as well at the time I must admit. / This little girl I drew from a very old photo…a Jingle Dancer I believe she was. / Starting in 1880, the Jicarilla Apaches started negotiations for a reservation, and though promises were made by the federal government, the Jicarilla Apaches didn’t have a reservation of their own until Feb. 11, 1887. President Grover Cleaveland gave the executive order. / The Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation is located within two northern New Mexico counties: Rio Arriba County and Sandoval County / The reservation has a land area of 3,532.864 km² (1,364.046 sq mi) and had a population of 2,755 as of the 2000 census. Its capital is Dulce which comprises over 95 percent of the reservation’s population, near the extreme north end. / As a point of interest, the Jicarilla Band of Apache were the single band that refused to cooperate with the United States military in trying to locate Geronimo. /

/ / Original pencil drawing on Aquarelle Arches paper 56×76cm / Drawing 15 hours/painting 12 hours = 27 hours total A digitally painted hand drawn artwork… the inspiration for this is “Meeting Places”... As a child one of the most frequent things we did together as a family was to attend church on Sundays, I went to a Catholic School and the church I remember best was St Agnes’ at Port Macquarie… the nuns would come over for morning tea sometimes, and the priests would come for dinner occasionally…they were the days of fun parish picnics and life that wasn’t so hurried..when we took time to socialise, meeting and enjoying one another’s company. Mum was/is a great cook and host…and although this picture isn’t authentic as a portrait of her and myself…it’s representative. It’s also representative of new life and hope for the future, as the mother figure is with child….. and the child herself nurtures the wildlife…perhaps she is taking them to church for a blessing… perhaps the joey has lost his mother and needs nursing til he can fend for himself. The kookaburra is all seeing and all knowing….. the wise overseer of the bush… in this case, he stands in as the owl figure.

How brave they’ll all think me at home! Why, I wouldn’t say anything about it, even if I fell off the top of the house!’ (Which was very likely true.) – “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” Original artwork measures approx. 12.5×19” and was created with oil pastels, colored pencils, metaliic silver pens, and marker. Autumn 2009 – pencil on paper This was created using 2,4 and 5B’s (that acted like H’s) on a non-marked cotton rag paper that acted like a cranky toddler. 8.6” high x 11.75” wide This is the very naughty paper I bemoaned a while back. / I really wish I knew the name of it so to avoid it at all costs the rest of my life. But anyway, enough of my moaning, it’s done. This was a hard one to title. I really couldn’t figure out WHY I was drawing it in the first place. I started out a few months ago making it very large – 30” across, but that’s when I had a fit and tore the paper in half. The catholic in me had to find redemption so I took a little bit of it and decided to try it again. The image wouldn’t leave me alone. It was strange though – it didn’t want to title itself. It typically shows up close to the finish, but even just a few days ago, it was not here. Humpf. A few tried to flirt with me. Didn’t work. I thought I’ll just let it rest. Until yesterday, when life and it collided. A friend sent me that quintessential Anais Nin poem for other reasons and I knew that I must take the first portion of it for my title.. And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin / US (French-born) author & diarist (1903 – 1977) ......................................................................................................... And suddenly, it all made perfect sense. So bloom my dears, bloom… / (smile) (I’m very happy to report that a slightly cropped version of this was included (and sold) in the Australian Mirrors Art Exhibition) The Anderson Arts Center where the framed original made its debut… / This drawing will be at the booth of Marion Harris at the upcoming Outsider Art Fair this coming February in New York.

Graphite (2b to 8b) on A3 UPM Digi 190gsm white paper. I donated a portrait as a fundraiser for my son’s kindy. I’m so pleased that this family won the raffle – the little girl, aged 4, is just adorable and her Mum has done lots for the kindy. It was a huge undertaking though – took me ages. I’m not really happy with the scan as I think you lose detail (but this always seems to be the case!). Winner of Avatar Challenge in “Pencil Drawing” Dec 09. \ / My idea of a holy picture, like the ones we used to have when we were little with a contemporary feel to it. St Agnes of Rome (c. 291 – c.304 virgin–martyr) is often depicted carrying a little lamb. She is the patron saint of chastity, gardeners, girls, engaged couples, rape victims, and virgins.
