Just below the dam on the Missouri river in Yankton, the Chief White Crane Recreation area is a beautiful place to visit in every season of the year. In summers, small children build sand castles on the beach while kayakers and canoeists paddle the calm waters of Lake Yankton. In winter the bald eagles are abundant here. In autumn there is no prettier place for a drive, and each spring migratory waterfowl grace the area with their presence.

This statue is in Muncie, IN / It is in Delaware county in the east central part of the state. / According to the Wikipedia, this area was first settled in the 1770’s by the Delaware Indians, who had been transported from their tribal lands near / the east coast to Ohio and eastern Indiana. They founded several towns along the White River, including Munseetown, near the site of present- day Muncie. / The tribes were forced to cede their land to the federal government and move farther west in 1818, and in 1820 the area was opened to white settlers. Muncie was one of the cities considered for a state capitol when it was moved from Corydion. It was considered to be a suitable location by many due to its location on the White River. The city of Muncie was incorporated in1865. Contrary to popular legend, the city is not named after a mythological Chief Munsee, but was actually named after Munsee Town, the white settlers’ name for the Indian village on the site.
Chief Niwot is said to have first stated at this meeting his legendary Curse of the Boulder Valley.According to the chief, the curse was its breathtaking landscape: “ People seeing the beauty of this valley will want to stay, and their staying will be the undoing of the beauty. “ Chief Niwot or Left Hand(-ed) (c. 1825-1864) was a tribal leader of the Southern Arapaho people and played an important part in the history of Colorado. The Arapaho called themselves simply Inuna-ina, meaning “our people.” Chief Niwot and his people lived along the Front Range often wintering in Boulder Valley, site of the future Boulder, Colorado. Despite breaching the borders of Arapaho territory, early prospectors were welcomed by Niwot in Boulder Valley during the Colorado Gold Rush. Niwot died with many of his people at the hands of the Third Colorado Cavalry in the Sand Creek Massacre, which was one of the precipitating events that led to some three decades of Indian Wars throughout the American West. Throughout Boulder County, many places pay tribute to Chief Niwot and the Arapaho Tribe. The town of Niwot, Colorado, Left Hand Canyon, Niwot Mountain, and Niwot Ridge are all named for him. And a main thoroughfare through Boulder is Arapaho(e)(sic) Avenue. (Wikipedia)

The day Obama visited Bozeman, it was clear when he landed and hailed during his talk. I was outside looking for Air Force One when I caught this crazy sky. A little bit of everything.
This 5”x8” pen and ink sketch includes a small volcanic cone ‘hill’ (the darker cone right side of sketch) that has a bit of American Indian history that fascinates me. In the early 1870’s A one armed U.S. Army general met with Cochise, a famous Apache chief, in an area on the eastern side of the Dragoon Mountains known as ‘Council Rocks’. In this half mile wide ‘bowl, surrounded by tall balancing boulders, the general and Cochise made a treaty regarding a reservation for the Apaches. As the General and his small Army detachment left the meeting and headed back to their fort, Cochise had a large white flag erected on top of ‘Treaty Hill”. It could be seen for up to a hundred miles in most directions and notified his small bands of warriors about his success with the treaty… and to not attack the soldiers on their way home. My 5.5”X8.5” Canson sketch book uses Universal Recycled acid free paper with a very fine tooth. As in everything I do, it’s all one big experiment!
