“Race kip” (race chicken) is part of a series (acryllic and ink on paper) I did for a book of my paintings combined with humorous animal poetry (from various authors) called “Het stapelschaap en andere dierengedichten” ISBN-10 90 77408 27 4.
“I was born down south on a chicken farm near Mashville, Tennessee, / Werent nobody there but a sky full of air, / Seventeen billion chickens and me. / Then one day I said ‘hey, hey, hey – think I’ll drop a little LSD”. / There were chickens in the cauliflower, chickens in the corn, / Chickens driving cadillacs to Washington DC, / When I set my chickens FREE!! (Gilbert Shelton – American comic artist)
This must be the ultimate in captive animal photography as the chook was in a small cage in Victoria Market waiting to be sold. I had to shoot with the 18-200mm lens right up to the wires in the cage and position the lens to get rid of the image of the wires. This was tricky as the bird kept moving around. Any suggestions for a better title as I am not overly fond of this but am devoid of ideas?

Not Quite Hatched! Little silkie chick was almost out of the shell – the miracle of these wonderful creatures emerging from their eggs will never stop amazing me! The following morning – Mum and Baby doing fine!
An ex-battery hen now basking in freedom with the space to walk, dust bathe and stretch those wings. More of my work here: /
This little guy appeared a touch ruffled – perhaps it had something to do with the fact that he had hatched within the past few hours! : ) Taken at the Elizabethtown Fair, Pennsylvania, 2008.

hey yall this is one of my most beautiful roosters…...he is awesome in size and in color, talking rainbow and vivid….....im amazed every time i take photos of him, all that beauty in one place, i love this rooster, and i have many roosters and they are beautiful…....but this guy is number OneeeeeeeeeO…1, no thanksgiviing dinner here, his beauty saved him.
After Hurricane Gustav blew through Louisiana, this handsome rooster showed up at the office of an oil service company. He was very friendly and plucky, even climbing the steps to sit on the porch of the office building to chew the fat with the guys working their seven day shift. The men inquired but no one claimed the rooster, so he’s now a regular on the premises. One day, one of the crewman decided to tidy up around the place with a little lawn mowing and weed eating. Gus went berserk when he saw the weed eater and attacked it beak and claw! The blood went flying everywhere before the worker could pull the offensive instrument out of harm’s way. Thankfully, Gus mended just fine, with a few battle scars as souvenirs of his skirmish and newfound pride in that he had taken on the enemy and protected the home turf with grit and gutsiness. Gus, named after a hurricane, sometimes has a stormy temperament but he can mellow down and be good company with folks, too. Gus, you’re the best!
the title speaks for itself… That was my thought when I saw the photo…
8/16/09 ~ Featured in Black with a Hint of Color ~ Thank you so much!! 8/11/09 ~ Featured in Rural Around the Globe ~ Thank you BigD!!!! A profile of Mother Hen from the Keystone Group photo shoot. I believe in this shot, Mother Hen was staring at Lois….. who is very good at talking to farm animals! If you look very closely you can probably see the reflection of Lois in the eyeball – HA! There was dim lighting inside the barn so I was using a slower shutter speed. I didn’t get as much clarity as I hoped for. Taken 8/8/09 at Breakway Farms, Manheim, PA. SUNLIGHT / MOTHER HEN / WHAT A HAM!
I fought and struggled with this illustration for the good part of a day. I’d been confronting a drawers block and thinking about what I’d do with my life when I came home from the farm. I realised I couldn’t let her get the better of me and I couldn’t give up. So I gave the girl, Dorothy, a bike and Berlina a chicken companion. After that the colours flowed and the look of stubbornness became a look of determination. (Dorothy and Berlina are characters from Return to Oz)
This painting is acrylic on back stapled stretched canvas. It is 10”w x 8”h. The original painting sold in 2009.
Most of the photos in this calendar are self portraits, with my friend and my daughter in a few of them. / Kevin
