I know what I said but I still have to keep going with Alice. Oil pastel on paper. “The cat only grinned when it saw Alice. It looked good natured, she thought. Still, it had very long claws and a great many teeth, so she felt that it ought to be treated with repect.” -Lewis Carroll

/ Olivia’s smile. She adopted me from the local Humane Society (an open door shelter) in January of 2008. She was brought in to the Humane Society by a family who had found her abandoned, starving and flea infested in the middle of a harsh New England winter. The family who found her and brought her in to the Humane Society named her. I kept her name, in honor of that piece of her life story. What happened to her, how she survived prior to being found and rescued will forever remain a mystery. Olivia was brought into the Humane Society on 12/26/2007 and her age was “guesstimated” at only 2 months. After she firmly pawed her way into my heart and our home, I brought her to the vet for a complete check-up. Based on her teeth, the vet said she was actually between 6 and 8 months of age. She’s been home, here in her “fur-ever home” since January 16th, is thriving, growing, and happy (see smile). As am I. What a blessing! It remains difficult for me to believe that she’s only been a part of my life for a little over six months at this point. She is such an integral part of my life as we spend much time together, playing, bird watching, “cat” napping, snuggling. Enjoying each others’ company tremendously.

I received a ceramic cheshire cat as a gift a few years ago. It lives in my studio and I have always liked it’s energy. Alice in Wonderland is a favorite story of mine, and a huge influence on my artwork. I also have “Six Bird Hunters in Full Camouflage” by James Christensen hanging in my house which certainly played a part in the direction of this piece. I felt the time had come to tie these influences together. I wanted to give a different spin to the Cheshire Cat character. In Alice in Wonderland, he is mischievous, almost menacing… this one is a little more friendly and forgiving. I also really enjoy the classic dichotomy between a cat and a goldfish. The fish always seems so helpless against the huge cat, but cats usually hate water, and therefore can’t really get after the fish. It’s a peculiar relationship. I wanted to create a delicate tension between the cat and fish that accentuates this situation, yet remains in a perfect balance. The cat looks so harmless with it’s sheepish grin, like it couldn’t hurt a fly, let alone a fish…yet, is he really? or is it all just for show? And the goldfish, he should be terrified in his position, but he has this arrogant, sort of cocky grin like he has nothing to fear and is on top of the world. Are these two friends? Or enemies? I’ll let you be the judge…

A college project to do the artwork for a make-believe film. I choose “Dambusters 2” featuring Wing Commander Lenard Cheshire. This is the nose-art for his P51 Mustang, and the figure was based on the controversial 2000 Opium advert of Sophie Dahl. I put some pants on her and turned her upright. I gave the film the “Pearl Harbor” treatment i.e. don’t let the facts get in to way of a good story! / This is painted on 2 metal panels bolted together. (Lids from twin tub washing machine). The rivets are painted on. / Stop Press / Stephen Fry has written a screenplay for a new $100million Dambuster movie starring Jame McAvoy as Guy Gibson.
