A wonderful place to relax the world away in this natural hot tub setting… and also a great place for viewing the Northern Lights of Alaska… This is actually a natural thermal hot springs… known as Chena Hot Springs Rock Lake, located about 60 miles Northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska. The water temperature is 110 degrees year round, and the depth of the lake varies daily, depending on the activity of the Springs itself, but is typically around 4 feet in depth…. You don’t even notice the below 20 degree temperatures as you exit the lake and head back to the bathhouse….

We are glad you have come to visit us)” ~ “MIAMI TWIGH TWEE STORY The Miami’s name Twigh Twee, or Twaatwaa, originates during an early period of our existence. During this time, the Miami discovered the Cherokee, and were in the habit of making war on them. They attacked three different times before the Cherokee took action to retaliate. The Cherokee War Party followed the Miami. They came upon a large river, discovering a single track along the bank. They crossed the large river, and upon the other side were more tracks. As they continued, they found tracks in different locations at various intervals of the march until they saw the head and neck of a Crane blazed on the side of a tree. They crossed a prairie where they saw two of these animals flying above them. As the Cherokee approached the other side, the Cranes let out a noise, crying out as they do when they are frightened. At length, the Miami’s rushed upon the Cherokee, the noise of the Crane still amiss. Every Cherokee but one was killed. When he returned to his village, he told his people that they need not worry at their frequent past defeats because they were not conquered by men, but by the Twau Twau’s, who could fly off in an instant. The Kaw Tribe, formerly known as the Kansa (or Konza) at one time stretched over 20 million acres across northern Kansas into Nebraska and Missouri. In 1825, a treaty was signed by the Kanza Tribe in which the Tribe “agreed” to sell a large portion of its land base and relocated to a reservation near present day Topeka, Kansas. The Kansa lived a semi-nomadic life, depending primarily on buffalo hunting and some farming for their food. They obtained social prestige and honor only in combat, and their chiefs were chosen for bravery and wisdom. The culture of the Kansa was that of the Plains people of the central United States. Typical of the Plains culture area, adolescent boys underwent a puberty rite known as the vision quest-a period of isolation meant to invoke supernatural images. Religious beliefs were centered around spirits associated with nature. Highly developed burial customs were followed; the body was placed in a shallow grave with food, clothing, and other needs for the afterlife. By 1840 the lands of the Kansa had been acquired by the United States government and incorporated into the so-called Indian Territory, to which many Native Americans were being removed. In 1846, the Kaw numbering about 1,600, signed another treaty and moved southwestward near what is known today as Council Grove, Kansas Kanza ~ Kaw Nation Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi

Spirit of Delight ~ Chena River Autumn Colours / Tanana River Valley / Interior Alaska Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved “A gold fringe on the purpling hem Of hills the river runs, / As down its long, green valley falls The last of summer’s suns. / Along its tawny gravel-bed Broad-flowing, swift, and still, / As if its meadow levels felt The hurry of the hill, / Noiseless between its banks of green From curve to curve it slips; / The drowsy maple-shadows rest Like fingers on its lips. / A waif from Carroll’s wildest hills, Unstoried and unknown; / The ursine legend of its name Prowls on its banks alone. / Yet flowers as fair its slopes adorn As ever Yarrow knew, / Or, under rainy Irish skies, By Spenser’s Mulla grew; / And through the gaps of leaning trees Its mountain cradle shows / The gold against the amethyst, The green against the rose. / Touched by a light that hath no name, A glory never sung, / Aloft on sky and mountain wall Are God’s great pictures hung. / How changed the summits vast and old! No longer granite-browed, / They melt in rosy mist; the rock is softer than the cloud; / The valley holds its breath; no leaf Of all its elms is twirled; / The silence of eternity Seems falling on the world. / The pause before the breaking seals Of mystery is this; / Yon miracle-play of night and day makes dumb its witnesses. / What unseen altar crowns the hills that reach up stair on stair? / What eyes look through, what white wings fan These purple veils of air? / What Presence from the heavenly heights To those of earth stoops down? / Not vainly Hellas dreamed of gods On Ida’s snowy crown! / Slow fades the vision of the sky, The golden water pales, / And over all the valley-land A gray-winged vapour sails. / I go the common way of all; The sunset fires will burn, / The flowers will blow, the river flow, When I no more return. / No whisper from the mountain pine Nor lapsing stream shall tell / The stranger, treading where I tread, Of him who loved them well. / But beauty seen is never lost, God’s colours all are fast; / The glory of this sunset heaven into my soul has passed, / A sense of gladness unconfined To mortal date or clime; / As the soul liveth, it shall live Beyond the years of time. / Beside the mystic asphodels Shall bloom the home-born flowers, / And new horizons flush and glow With sunset hues of ours. / Farewell! these smiling hills must wear Too soon their wintry frown, / And snow-cold winds from off them shake The maple’s red leaves down. / But I shall see a summer sun still setting broad and low; / The mountain slopes shall blush and bloom, The golden water flow. / A lover’s claim is mine on all I see to have and hold, / The rose-light of perpetual hills, And sunsets never cold!” Poetry by John Greenleaf Whittier 1876 ~ Featured Member’s Choice Outdoors Fall Scenics October 2007 Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi /

All rights reserved Beautiful Art and Greeting Cards For Sale ~ Shop securely and view my collection here Meet Boodle! She is a beautiful Crested Swede Duck, a pet dearly loved by Jeremy and Jena, who I met near North Pole Alaska at Chena Lakes in 2007. They carry her on walks in a pet carrier, and when they are in a safe area away from dogs… they place her on the ground where she follows their sweet calls like a little puppy and swims in the lake! She is so darling! She isn’t Blue and she isn’t Black, she is brown, so I have been unable to locate any specific information on her breed. “As early as 1835, the Blue Swedish Duck was being raised by farmers in Pomerania, which back then was part of Sweden, thus the name. Swedish Ducks are one of the heartiest of all the breeds, with a calm disposition. They are active foragers. Their body type is very close to the Pekin duck with carriage being a little more upright. Adult weight is around 8 lbs for the drake and 7 lbs for the hen duck. Cockerels are males age 1 day to 12 months of age, cock is a male over 1 year old, stag is a male 5-11 months of age, pullets are females age 1 day to 12 months of age, hen is over 1 years old and straight run is a term for males and females mixed as they hatch and not separated. Generally 100 straight run chicks will give you 50 pullets and 50 cockerels as an average” / If you click on this link, here is an information source and excellent article on Care of Baby Chicks / Domestic Ducks Breed Index / For information and free materials contact United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service / Wikipedia List of National Birds Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi / Shooting Date/Time 18 August 2007 16:31:57 / Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/400 / Av( Aperture Value ) 10.0 / ISO Speed 400 / Lens EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM / Focal Length 135.0 mm
The Sound of the Sun / Embrace of the Everlasting “It makes one all right, / though you hadn’t thought of it, / A sound like the sound of the sky on fire, / like Armageddon, / Whistling and crackling, the explosions of sunlight booming / As the huge mass of gas rages into the emptiness around it. It isn’t a sound you are often aware of, / though the light speeds / To us in seconds, / each dawn leaping easily across a chasm / Of space that swallows the sound of that sphere, / but If you listen closely some morning, when the sun swells Over the horizon and the world is stil / and still asleep, / You might hear it, / a faint noise so far inside your mind / That it must come from somewhere, / from light rushing to darkness, / Energy burning towards entropy, / towards a peaceful solution, / Burning brilliantly, spontaneously, in the middle of nowhere, And you, too, must make a sound that is somewhat like it, Though that, of course, you have no way of hearing at all.” ~ The Sound of the Sun by George Bradley Sun Pillar / Sunset near Chena River Lakes Recreational Park / Wilderness of North Pole Alaska / From my collection: / Emerquinox Spirit of Alaska / Emerquinox is a word I coined when I combined the words Emerge and Equinox.
