In Canyon De Chelly Az. These are the famous cliff dwellings that Ansel Adams photographed. When I visited that area of the southwest a couple rolls of film were overexposed, particularly the ones from this area. I liked this shot anyway however and have worked on it with photo shop. The southwest in daylight is harsh and part of what one remembers about the area.

Spider Rock stands with awesome dignity and beauty over 800 feet high in Arizona’s colorful Canyon de Chelly National Park (pronounced da Shay). Geologists of the National Park Service say that “the formation began 230 million years ago. It stands windblown sand swirled and compressed with time created the spectacular red sandstone monolith. Long ago, the Dine (Navajo) Indian tribe named it Spider Rock. Stratified, multicolored cliff walls surround the canyon. For many, many centuries the Dine (Navajo) built caves and lived in these cliffs. Most of the caves were located high above the canyon floor, protecting them from enemies and flash floods. / This painting was created in my Grants Pass, Oregon Studio Original is sold 555 Views Featured in / Spirit of the Native American / First People of America

A twilight shot of Spider Rock in Canyon de Chelly National Monument, AZ. / Thanks for looking!
It took all the magnification of my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ12 (about 300mm) to get close enough to the ruins to appreciate them. Then it took some cropping and pixel additions to get a picture big enough to make it worth looking at. Then by layering the picture over a nice autumn maple leaf, the richness of color and texture in the rock walls overcame a bit of pixelation. And finally I have a picture worth printing as a memory of the last trip to Indian country with my hubby. Canyon de Chelly National Monument Narbona Expedition The Navajos also knew disaster in their canyon. On a snowy day early in January of 1805, one of their villages suffered a surprise attack by Spanish Lieutenant Antonio Narbona and his military expedition deep in Canyon del Muerto. As they retreated in the snow, the warriors swiftly hid their families in a cave high up the canyon wall. Narbona’s men discovered the hiding place, and “they finished off the Navajos, the aged, hysterical mothers and crying babies, to the last person, Since the slaughter, the Navajos have called the place “Massacre Cave.” Canon 5D / Len 600mm f/4L IS USM / Shutter Speed – 1/800 / Aperture Value – 8.0 / EV 0 / ISO 100 / Focal Length – 600mm

Spider Rock in Arizona’s beautiful Canyon De Chelly.
I crawled inside this rock to take this photo of the sunlight beaming down through the cracks.
This photo was taken inside the canyon walls of Canyon De Chelly. It’s about a 1.5 mile walk into the canyon and the park management have changed it considerably. I don’t think it is nearly picturesque as my memories of 1985. / May 2008 /
This came about as an attempt to resurrect the feelings I had when visiting this place. It is a beautiful and tragic place.
