Hi, I’m wondering what programme for my camera e.g. photoshop. I’m very very new to this and I have a Pentax K100D Super and i find the programme that comes with that not very user friendly. I know loadsa people have Photosop, but it is fool-proof? Or can anyone recommend a programme that is cheap and user friendly – big ask i know!! My budget for a programme would be £50-60 (?is this reasonable or way off the mark?!) Ciaran

Recently I got offered the chance to put up one of my pieces that I wrote in the exhibition at the BSG Gallery for the Melbourne Group. I am now mixing through ideas to present this and I hopefully will keep you updated on the progress. The piece Thin Cheap Coat was written while I was at the last Red Bubble writers meet about an emotive and mental wall my mind puts up. In its final incarnation, it will be put up on the Friday not this one but the next. As far as I know the space available is immediately to the left as you enter.

Ok. so i’m feeling generous, and in the light of the credit crunch I thought I’d knock 15% off all of my t-shirts for this weekend (27/03/09 – 29/03/09…maybe longer if i forget on monday morning)... that works out at almost 70% off my mark-up…maybe redbubble shouldn’t have their base prices so high, decide to up their base prices in the UK and be greedy by gaining so much profit out of us artists, Maybe they should give the artists more room for markups. Anyways.. go take a look.. maybe there has been a T-shirt you have had an eye on for a while and you’ve thought, hey…thats a bit pricey….Also…payday…end of the month….Treat yourself. your Partner, your dog…ok..maybe not your dog…..although seeing animals in one of my T-shirts could be cool. Happy Browsing, Buying, ignoring… Gav

OK so I didn’t think of this, but I’m damned if I can find the link to where I first read about it, so all credit to the guy who thought of it, I’m just paying it forward if I do find the link again, I will post it here and name the guy who came up with this genius idea Studio lights are bloody expensive ! so to do it on the cheap, I went to ScrewFix we all have these general cheap DIY Stores in our towns, and I purchased Two of the larger Tripod Sitelights, and two of the little ground level sitelights the good thing about these is that they came with 500Watt lights as standard, but you can buy different wattages down to 100, and in some places you can also purchase halogen “Daylight” bulbs that will fit them, the only downside, they get bloody hot if you have them on for a while, so packing away needs to involve a coffe, a ciggie, or maybe a pint ! total cost £50:00 ! not bad Eh ? so here is my setup as it stands Lights Staying on the cheap, we all have “PoundShops” in our towns as well, or whatever they are called in your part of the world, you know the place I mean though, usually you buy something there and it lasts a week, a month if you’re lucky ! Cheap Umbrella with Silver lining, and a Windscreen shade, Green one side, and silver the other Total Cost £6:00 ! again not bad eh ! I cut the Windscreen shade in half, although for a quid I guess buy another ! Reflectors I also bought a bunch of clamps for holding the Marquee sides up on available nails ETC. another Quid ! the three marquees were bought for a street party and I am the keeper of said marquees, so £0:00 ! plus for £4:00 I bought a set of Chiffon type curtains from Ikea for women to look wonderful draped in So how mobile is this setup ? Very, the most expensive Single Item of the lot, TKmaxx, one suitcase, £20:00 All of it fits inside, the two trripod lights, the two little ones, the clamps, the curtains, the Marquee sides, the umbrella, Suitcase and to show the size of the Case, I had to find something to give it some perspective, Oooh look ! there’s that hat again ! Ready to Roll Grand Total £81:00 Photography on the cheap ! Love ‘N’ Laughter Kriss

Macro Photography Light Most of us who try to attempt super macro or macro photography discover very quickly that lighting is a major problem. If the light is bright enough to give you a sharp image it is often impossible to place the camera where you can get the shot you want without having a shadow from the camera itself. The cost of commercial macro lights are from $90 US and up. NOTE: The following is not an original idea from me, I found the idea published in a web site that some one had posted. I did a search for macro lights on Google. I have tried to find the web site again so I can give credit to the person who had the idea but can no longer find it. I bought a 24 LED Camp light from Ebay for less than ten dollars including shipping. I simply put “LED camp light” in the eBay search window. My macro camera has an outside lens barrel diameter of two inches so building mine was relatively easy. I was able to keep the battery mounts inside the light so I didn’t have to change any wiring. With a larger barrel diameter camera the idea will still work but becomes a little more involved. You will have to remove the battery holders (they can be broken off using a pair of pliers) and solder wires (they can also be twisted together and taped but are not as secure as soldered wires) to the wires that connect the batteries in the light. You will then need to purchase an additional battery box with a switch and wires to solder (or twist and tape) to the confectioning wires in the light. Radioshack’s on line web site sells a four battery (AA) box which is a series box giving you six volts, with switch and wire leads for around two dollars. The batteries have to be in a series (+ to – + to – + to – + to -) so that you have a six volt supply to run the lights. I located the center of my camp light and drew a two and one eighth inch circle on the front and back plastic pieces of the light. I then used a rotozip tool to cut out the circle in both the front and back. There are a number of different tools you can use to cut the plastic in a circle including a box knife. Because the camp light I bought had a built in switch originally in a hole in the front of the light. I was able to cut a slot in the back of the light and place the switch there without having to rewire anything. I used a piece of old insulated extension cord (the round type) to make a rubber protective ring for the holes in the light to keep my camera barrel from getting scratched with the plastic since the camera is placed through the hole in the camp light. I carefully split the insulation on the extension cord so I had a straight line cut then removed the insulation, cut it to length and used a hot glue gun to glue the insulation rubber ring to the inside of the hole in the camp light. You can use any protective material, felt, rubber that you want to line the hole just so the outside of your camera barrel is not scratched. I used rubber and made it fit tight so I can slide the light on the camera and I will stay without having to hold it in place. I have to admit that I could have made it look a little neater with more time spent on the glue work When using LED light for photography you will often need to adjust the white balance of your camera or edit the image in your computer because of the blue quality of light that LED lights emit. It is also possible to buy similar light rings with IR (infrared) lights to make your own light ring which does not have the blue light quality. You can also make one without using a camp light just by using LED or IR lights hand wired to a circle you cut from different types of materials. To get more ideas Google “Macro light or LED Light Rings” Now an example of images without and with the Macro Light!! An Image with the camera shadow An Image with the light Good luck with your creation and Enjoy.

Just been browsing the lomography site (http://www.lomography.com) and found this….....the perfect rules to live by! 1. / Take your camera everywhere you go. / 2. / Use it any time – day and night. / 3. / Lomography is not an interference in your life, but part of it. / 4. / Try the shot from the hip. / 5. / Approach the objects of your Lomographic desire as close as possible. / 6. / Don’t think. (William Firebrace) / 7. / Be fast. / 8. / You don’t have to know beforehand what you captured on film. / 9. / Afterwards either. / 10. / Don’t worry about any rules. i have really been getting into lomography and other such things recently – i love relinquishing all control over my photographs and just seeing what happens. much more interesting that way, no pre planning, no post production, just really simple shots, which may or may not work out. i think thats the way id like to go about things for a while. who needs a 2grand camera when you can get a handful of cheap plastic ones for 50quid and get amazing, unique, random and unexpected results!

I know i’ve got a bazillion comments/replies/ to attend to, and lots of art to peruse, but i’m coming off a two-day bender with some killer asthma and it hurts to breathe and talk (a blessing, some might say, heh heh). I also stubbornly insisted upon going to the Gay Pride parade, as one of my friends was dancing in it and i just couldn’t miss out. It was so much fun – so many people we could barely walk around – so i drank some beer and just went with the tides of people and had a blast. I kissed some crazy latina girl and cheered myself hoarse when the Bi float went by (no pun intended) – but i was beat within a couple hours, and came back to my friends’ place just in time to have another killer asthma attack… Joy. ANYhow, i’ll be resting up today and getting to bed early. Perhaps i’ll have something to post later (maybe i’ll put up an older piece, we’ll see – i’ve yet to go home so it’s a crap-shoot). Hope you all had a lovely weekend :). Selkie

I have found a fun way to use a 50mm prime lens on my 40D. Remove the lens from the camera and reverse it. Here’s a helpful tutorial that I found today on the net which may help. I didn’t use a reverse ring, but it worked out just the same. A word of caution though, be very conscious that you are removing the lens and may expose your camera insides to dust etc so don’t leave the camera lying around without a cap. Here are some of the images that I have taken. This one could have been sharper but I rather liked the softness combined with the DoF. Give it a go, it’s a great way to expand your existing equipment momentarily without the expense of a new lens.

Once again I’ve been inspired by Mel Brackstone, an artist who really does look at the “art” more than the science of photography. Apart from the brilliant landscapes and seascapes and peoplescapes she creates using hi-tech precision lenses, she also dabbles in the dark art of the “lensbaby”. Mel recently posted some lensbaby work that had me salivating and thinking about creating such a contraption. She kindly lent me a custom made bendy lens known as a MelHolga so that I could have a play with it and see how it was constructed. (the MelHolga was made by Ran, check out his artbending Trials revealed that the particular MelHolga she sent me was suitable only for very close work. In order to achieve more distant focus, I tried various lenses that I had lying around and as it turned out my 3x loupe not only worked but was just the right size to fit neatly into the rubber bellows of the MelHolga. With this arrangement the lens can now focus from infinity to really close, about 250mm (ten inches) and can be manually offset (laterally and/or tilted) to achieve genuine “tilt shift” and selective focus. I have compared the field of vision with my zoom lens and this indicates that it has a focal length of about 75mm (the Holga is 60mm) this is not bad for portraits and street photography though it’s obviously not wide enough for expansive landscapes. Measurements indicate smallest diameter of about 22mm which which results in an aperture of approximately f/3.5. My Canon 450D can only be used with this lens in full manual mode with no aperture setting at all and no metering or focus confirm, the only settings that can be changed are ISO film speed and shutter speed. The focus is soft and can be moved around the frame to some extent though there is a lot of guesswork involved. I think with practice some more consistency could be obtained. Because the loupe has a single element plastic lens there is a substantial amount of flare and chromatic aberration and also soft out of focus edges. This lends itself to mono conversion for many images, particularly when used in bright light. When tilted there is severe distortion in most of the frame which tends to be in lines or rough triangular shapes. It’s these characteristics which make this an interesting lens to play with. I’ve been taking a few shots with it and it produces some really pleasing results. There’s something very appealing about trying to achieve artistic images in the camera, I’ve also found myself paying much more attention to framing because this lens has no zoom capability. For anyone who’s interested, below these images I describe how to make a bendy loupe lens for very little cost. Thanks are due to Ran who made the original MelHolga :-) / Nuns gathering ? this is a detail from the image above, I couldn’t resist LOL / This is the “Bendy Loupe Lens” The total cost of making this lens from scratch is about $25 and an hour (more or less) of fiddling around. What you’ll need: / / A body cap to suit your camera. (about Aus $7.50 on the net) A cheap plastic loupe (Aus $8.95 from Jaycar) Rubber bellows from an older style mountain bike fork (I picked this up from a bike shop though most no longer have them, they should be available on the net if you go looking. If you can’t find this, Canondale leftie boots are still available or an automotive steering rack boot would do though you may have to add some packing to get the lens to sit firmly) / / How to make it: Use a hole saw or a large spade bit to cut a hole in the middle of the body cap just the right size for the narrow section of the bellows to fit firmly. (first use the hole saw or spade bit to cut a hole in a piece of scrap material so the the size can be checked before you cut a hole in the cap. If you don’t have the right size hole saw or spade bit, use an undersized one and file or sand the hole to the right size. Turn the rubber bellows inside out and clean thoroughly before use, remember that any loose dirt or dust inside them could end up inside your camera. Insert one end of the rubber bellows into the hole in the body cap, then fold the protruding end back inside the bellows on the camera side. This keeps it neat and secure. Press the loupe into the bellows, so that the inside face of the lens is about 32mm (1 ¼”) from the back of the body cap. Attach to camera and start shooting :-)

I have finally managed to find a simple and inexpensive way to design and print postcards! / I’ve done a series of the Ballina/Byron Bay area and a couple so far for the Queenscliff area in Victoria. I’ve done it all online with very little technical knowledge and basic home PC equipment so if I can do it anyone can! The website is zazzle.com and they’re based in California, though I use the Australian site (.com.au). I’ve had the Ballina series postcards printed as a tester and they’re great, though not quite as heavy as I would’ve liked, and there’s no minimum amount you need to order. They’re really quick too. I had the Fed Ex man knocking on my door with my printed postcards within a week of ordering them! That’s a calendar week people. I think I ordered them on the Thursday and they arrived on the Monday. There’s also a whole bunch of other products that you can design so the possibilities are vast. For those of us who are just trying to get a foot in the door and with little funds and knowledge and equipment its a good place to start. To view my postcards click here / From here you can also access the site generally. Cheers!

As Big Kev used to say … “I’m excited!”. I’ve been contacted by TeeFury who like my Quizzical Bailey design and want to feature it. They only feature ONE t-shirt for every 24-hour period, and sell that shirt remarkably cheaply (US$9 per shirt plus $US2 shipping within the US … slightly more to other countries). And the tees and printing are good quality . Quizzical Bailey goes on sale from midnight to midnight (US Eastern time) on Friday November 27. That’s from 4pm on Friday Australian eastern time. I’ll be sharing the proceeds with Jenni , who kindly allowed me to base my drawing on her photo of Bailey.
