  • Dad & I were out driving in the mountains behind Brignoles in SW France when he spotted what looked like a huge rock on top of a distant mountain. It wasn’t until we got closer that we realised it was the ruins of a very old castle. 4 hours later and many miles of off-road driving in our rental Citroen Xsara we decided to give up on ever finding a way of reaching it. As we turned the car for home I spotted a bitumen driveway and told Dad to drive up it, just for a look. The driveway soon gave way to a pot-holed dirt track that meandered around a corner and up the hill. Dad was sick of off roading in a car that definitely didn’t like it either, and he was going to turn around, but I insisted on going just a bit further. Then around the next bend we came to what was once a carpark below the ruins of this castle called Forcalquieret. It was in amazing condition with many rooms still useable. We thought we had discovered the lost world, but in fact there was a group of young locals setting-up camp in the main courtyard just through that big archway. We spent the next few hours pushing through brambles and other bushes, climbing over rocks and taking pictures of our discovery. We both felt like Indiana Jones. This picture will always remind me of the joys of unexpected discovery and the best day I have ever spent with my Father. Check out the CHATEAU DE FORCALQUEIRET SERIES

  • Despite the fact that it was quite a cloudy day, (see ’’CASTLE FORCALQUIERET 2’‘ ) these are not the original clouds. This wall is directly facing the setting sun and was very over exposed and due to the large area in darkness on the lower half, the camera overexposed everything, especially the sky which had completely washed out. As much as I object to photographers compositing into an image things that weren’t there, this is very much how the day actually looked. I will always advise clients anytime compositing has been done in Post Production. PROCESS: / -Import original colour image. / -Convert to B&W (Desaturate). / -Create Negative Mask layer and adjust Opacity. / -Merge Layers. / -Select by Contiguous Colour and remove original washed-out sky. / -Import clouds as Layer. / -Convert clouds to B&W (Desaturate). / -Move/position clouds. / -Rotate clouds slightly to better suit perspective. / -Merge Layers. / -Adjust Levels. / -Selective burning of Highlights and Midtones on the rocks on the pathway and some over-exposed areas on the rock wall to the far right of the archway. / -Create new Layer (transparency). / -Add Noise to new layer to create grain effect. / -Adjust Opacity of new ’’Noise Layer.’‘ / -Merge Layers. / -Adjust Levels. / -Scale Image to 2766×3840 pixels per inch at 150dpi. / -Save As .PNG file type – Compression Level 9. • Chateau de Villandry – a 16th century late Renaissance chateau in the Loire Valley, France…..famous for it’s magnificent gardens. The Loire Valley, with a great number of chateaux, is listed with UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. / / This recreated Renaissance garden at Villandry is like a tapestry changing with the seasons. / The gardens are on three levels. At the top, from where this photo is taken, is a water garden fringed with ancient lime trees, then on the next level down, a flower garden level with the chateau and then below that is the world’s largest ornamental kitchen garden. Eight full time gardeners maintain the gardens at Villandry. They raise and plant 60,000 vegetable and 45,000 bedding plants each year. / It truly is a delight to the senses. • Enchanting medieval castle and church perched upon a craggy island. The oldest surviving buildings date from the 12th century, when a Benedictine priory was founded here. Following the English Civil War, the island was acquired by the St Aubyn family, who still live in the castle. In the intervening years many additions and alterations were made to convert it for use as a mansion house.

  • sitting on the Charente river in Verteuil is this amazing privately owned chateau, set in the Vienne Department Poitou Charente This Medieval château, in a triangular shape, dominates the Charente River and the picturesque village of Verteuil. Belonging to the La Rochefoucauld family for over 1000 years, Verteuil is just as fascinating for its architectural riches as for the history of its famous owners. Their celebrated and illustrious guests included Emperor Charles V of Spain, King Henri II, Queen Catherine de Medici and Queen Margot, Louis XIII, Anne d’Autriche and Marie de Medici! Taken on a very cloudy and drizzly saturday afternoon with very poor lighting, on my Pentax optio M50

  • I have been attempting to learn the processes involved in adding layers and textures to images. Most have been not suitable for posting. Here goes – this is my first which I am happy to share, and for which, comments would be appreciated. PLEASE VIEW LARGER The original image was shot in 2007 using a Canon 400D, Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM Lens, ISO 100, 1/60sec, f22. In addition to the adjustments of Levels, Curves and Saturation I have added 3 different Textures at varying levels of Fill and Opacity with some final ‘tweaking’. All undertaken in CS3. The Chateau is Chateau de Montbrun in Haute Vienne, France. When I took the original image the Chateau was for sale at €9m!
