So after my grisly death last week, Mrs. Flibble had a go at sticking back my shredded body with some domestic strength wood glue. Apparently it took her quite a while, and she tells me she only had a few bits left over. I think she did a pretty good job, although I’ve yet to try out all bodily functions. Anyway. After a quick jump-start I was left with the arduous task of recharging my brain back up to 30 percent. Any more than that and things can go horribly wrong. You wouldn’t like to see me when I’m 31 percent, let alone 32. Splendid. A couple of points of note: This photo was excruciatingly painful to make. I really did clamp that clip to my ear and it has a mighty strong spring. Lit with two flashes: main was from above camera left through an umbrella and second was from bottom right reflected off something spangly for a bit of fill. Wide-angle lens about 15cm from gurning idiot. Blog: www.idrinkleadpaint.com

photography by Karon Melillo d’Vega / Charging Forward / Art Sculpture by Jay Laber, a popular and talented Montana Artist and member of the Blackfeet Tribe. / This fantastic and beautiful sculpture is located at the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana “Art imitates junk— Or is it, Junk imitates life? No matter. Life, art and / junk are all the same to Blackfeet artist Jay Laber, who studies junked cars where they lie rusting away on the prairies and river bottoms of Montana. / Laber, 43, first finds the spirit in the wrecks then gives them a second life / in his art. He welds, bends and shapes the parts, resurrecting them and setting / them into motion as charging warriors, rearing horses and dancing braves.” / source: “http://www.mtco-ops.com/Miscellaneous/PDF/July_2005/pgs89.pdf” /

This photo shows a large herd of wild horses on the Danube Delta, in Romania, charging directly at me. Well, there was no where to run so I kept shooting and they turned before trampling us. I didn’t notice that they’d scared up a pheasant while charging until I saw the photos afterwards! This herd is descended from a domestic herd which was let loose from a failed farm about 9 years ago, our guide told us. There are about 130 or so horses in it now. The field they’re in used to be a lake until the local government gave permission for it to be turned into a fish farm to a local businessman; instead of cultivating anything, he drained it, collected and sold the fish left flopping, and then left. Now it’s just pastureland. Between feral animals like the horses and land management practices like that, the Danube delta is a seriously endangered environment.

This is me playing with the locals. One of our favorite games is pretending to ignore one another and then engaging in false charges. Believe me, the mule deer are real good at this game. :) Prints in various sizes available at KOTY’S KORNER

Gauges on an old Ford farm tractor which appeared to still be in use. This is one of my earlier photos, right about the time when I really got hooked on photography.

This female black rhino was shot in the Masai Mara in Kenya. / Canon 400d / Canon 100-400mm / ISO 100 / 1/13th Sec / F5.6 / 400mm focal length Taken using a panning technique which involved following the rhino in the view finder and using a slow shutter speed to blur the background.
