  • / My ‘Portrait of Louie Armstrong’ is officially published in the coffee table book Artists of the West / For information on purchasing a signed copy of the book, go to Carrie Glenn Studios Thanks! Charcoal, graphite and ink on paper. My inspiration for this piece is Jazz, pure soulful and uninhibited jazz. Easy and yet complex were the sounds that drifted from Louie’s trumpet. From his trumpet playing to his rich vocals, Louie’s music is a great inspiration to me. I try to capture his depth of character and defined talent through my portrait. I created countless layers of meticulous details conveying everything from the veins in his hands to his handkerchief and the gleam in his eyes that says, he loves what he does. My goal was to truly capture Louie’s soul. ...I can hear his voice singing the song “What a Wonderful Life”...every time I look at this image, which is what inspired me to draw this piece. Enjoy! • / My ‘Portrait of Vincent Price’ is officially published in the coffee table book Artists of the West / For information on purchasing a signed copy of the book, go to Carrie Glenn Studios Thanks! RedBubble Awards: Winner Of The Pencil Drawing Group Contest* / ” Human Emotion “ Read the Write Up Here My drawing was featured in the group The Eyes Have It / (Thanks Everyone!) 5”x8” Charcoal, graphite and ink on paper. There is hardly enough time or words to sum up Vincent Price properly. He was a teacher, an actor, a collector of art and a chef to name a few. He had a true philanthropists heart and was a man of many talents and a creative pioneer. He has left a fingerprint on our society and myself. In my portrait of Vincent, in every wrinkle I reproduced, in every mole I fastidiously drew and in every single hair I portrayed I see his achievements. There are many fine details in this portrait. You will see the veins in his eyes countered by the shine and drama I captured in them. You will see every wrinkle on his hand and every whisker in his mustache. It is designed to transport you back to the last film you may have seen him in and capture that vivid memory. As you study this piece you can almost hear his voice still speaking. • ‘Atticus – ’ said Jem bleakly. ‘How could they do it, how could they?’ ‘I don’t know, but they did it. They’ve done it before and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it – seems that only children weep. Good night.’ / “Harper Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird” Open to interpretation – I’d love to hear what you think, and see if i got across the point i was trying to.. / The reference photo was taken by frixen on DeviantART (www.frixen.deviantart.com)

  • Charcoal on mylar drafting film, 22×18” The drafting film is translucent, so I have used a moonstone Canson pastel paper under the film for color. I work on the frosted side of the paper for tooth. The mylar lends a lovely soft effect, beautiful for rendering the translucence of skin. It is a tricky surface to work on, just a flick of the finger brings you back to the clean surface. I load my fingers with charcoal to get the soft gradations of tone. There were several unusual spiritual moments for me while working on this self-portrait. One was a near out of body experience while on a walk in the park, which spurred me to write my first poem in 30 years. A few days later, I started seeing black butterflies. Not so unusual in summer I suppose, but I don’t remember seeing this particular type in Chicago, maybe it’s due to our changing weather patterns. The odd thing was that I had just found a photo of a black butterfly online at RedBubble at http://www.redbubble.com/people/knightingail/art/1336726-1-black-beauty Then a black butterfly fluttered around me several times while I was walking that same afternoon! It happened again a couple of days later, this black butterfly flying in loops around me as I walked. Odd that the only black ones I saw, also seemed to notice me as well! Almost like they knew of my transformation. So, that inspired my second poem, “Black Butterfly” and I decided to incorporate a black butterfly into the drawing. The piece was made to fit a vintage distressed frame I found at my local antique shop. The Poem: Bemusing muse Black butterfly Came through the ether Mystical wings Encircled me along the way Enraptured on a summer day Music painted on the sky Black butterfly Blown in from far off dust Astral soul Dressed in stardust Black butterfly Draw me perfect Emergent from this coal black shell Wet wings spread in joy to stand Transformed Flawless at the artist’s hand Evanescent passion lies In our wavelengths intertwined Black butterfly Never caught Light gently in the mind Bring luminous thought (c) Alice McMahon White 2008

  • Original Creation Date: October 19th, 2005 I can say that this is the most technically complicated piece that I’ve done, or at least that’s how it felt when I was creating it. I can also say that there’s something oddly haunting, at least to me, about this image. Perhaps that’s why I linked it to the song I linked it to in the first place. I honestly can’t say what it is about this that gets me. All I know is that it gets me. I don’t like the title despite it fitting pretty well. Don’t ask why because I don’t know the answer to that either. It’s like everything about this piece, even the title… even the description, escapes me. That’s a little weird. It’s even weirder that I can’t explain why. Maybe it’s the fact that the boy in the picture looks so secluded and so closed off from the world that he doesn’t even want to let ME in. Sad, isn’t it? But I love him. • Original Creation Date: March 7th, 2006 The title: / Persephone, the Greek Goddess Persephone is the goddess of the underworld in Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, goddess of the harvest. Persephone was such a beautiful young woman that everyone loved her, even Hades wanted her for himself. One day, when she was collecting flowers on the plain of Enna, the earth suddenly opened and Hades rose up from the gap and abducted her. None but Zeus, and the all-seeing sun, Helios, had noticed it. Broken-hearted, Demeter wandered the earth, looking for her daughter until Helios revealed what had happened. Demeter was so angry that she withdrew herself in loneliness, and the earth ceased to be fertile. Knowing this could not continue much longer, Zeus sent Hermes down to Hades to make him release Persephone. Hades grudgingly agreed, but before she went back he gave Persephone a pomegranate (or the seeds of a pomegranate, according to some sources). When she later ate of it, it bound her to underworld forever and she had to stay there one-third of the year. The other months she stayed with her mother. When Persephone was in Hades, Demeter refused to let anything grow and winter began. This myth is a symbol of the budding and dying of nature. In the Eleusinian mysteries, this happening was celebrated in honor of Demeter and Persephone, who was known in this cult as Kore. • Original Creation Date: December 30th, 2006 The Snow Maiden, or Snegurochka, is an old Russian fairytale of an elderly couple that had the dream of having a daughter. One day, after a fresh snowfall, the couple fashioned a girl out of the snow and she magically came to life. But as the seasons changed from winter to spring, the Snow Maiden became increasingly sad. When summer came, the girl was in a deep depression. One day, while wandering the woods, the Snow Maiden came upon a group of girls. She began to hike with them until after dark, when the woods became colder and the girls built a camp fire to warm themselves by. Watching the girls jump over the camp fire one at a time, the Snow Maiden lept across the fire as well, but before she reached the other side of the fire she disappeared into little more than a watery mist. Perseus was both the first of the Greek mythic heros as well as the slayer of Medusa. He helped establish the authority of Zeus and the twelve Olympians in mainland Greece. Somehow I always manage to find mythological roles for the pieces that strike me as surreal or regal or ‘classic’. To me, this is the boy the most talented Greek and Roman marble sculptors would battle for. His features are paramount. His soft, semi-curly hair is reminiscent of that possessed by the ‘beautiful gods’. He looks delicate yet determined, stoic and quietly courageous. To me, he’s a tenacious youth, blindly valiant as he stalks into Medusa’s lair only to surface with his bloody sword in one hand and a severed head of snakes in the other. And as a result of his valor he acquires a few of his victim’s most desirable traits—a head of wildly unruly hair and beauty enough to turn any onlooker to stone. Medusa’s death comes at the most inopportune time, for if she could only gaze at her rival she would go mad with infatuation.
