  • Black Butterfly
    by Alice McMahon White

    US$3.99–US$106.40

Charcoal on mylar drafting film, 22×18” There were several unusual spiritual moments for me while working on this self-portrait. One was a near out of body experience while on a walk in the park, which spurred me to write my first poem in 30 years. A few days later, I started seeing black butterflies. Not so unusual in summer I suppose, but I don’t remember seeing this particular type in Chicago, maybe it’s due to our changing weather patterns. The odd thing was that I had just found a photo of a black butterfly online at RedBubble at http://www.redbubble.com/people/knightingail/art/1336726-1-black-beauty Then a black butterfly fluttered around me several times while I was walking that same afternoon! It happened again a couple of days later, this black butterfly flying in loops around me as I walked. Odd that the only black ones I saw, also seemed to notice me as well! Almost like they knew of my transformation. So, that inspired my second poem, “Black Butterfly” and I decided to incorporate a black butterfly into the drawing. The piece was made to fit a vintage distressed frame I found at my local antique shop. The Poem: Bemusing muse Black butterfly Came through the ether Mystical wings Encircled me along the way Enraptured on a summer day Music painted on the sky Black butterfly Blown in from far off dust Astral soul Dressed in stardust Black butterfly Draw me perfect Emergent from this coal black shell Wet wings spread in joy to stand Transformed Flawless at the artist’s hand Evanescent passion lies In our wavelengths intertwined Black butterfly Never caught Light gently in the mind Bring luminous thought (c) Alice McMahon White 2008

  • Portrait of Louie Armstrong
    by Carrie Glenn

    US$3.99–US$106.40

THIS IS NOT A PHOTOGRAPH / This is actually a drawing I created in pencil, charcoal and ink on paper that was based on a photograph. / Under copyright law my drawing is protected by Carrie Glenn Studios©2003. For any questions on my portrait work, please feel free to e-mail me anytime! Thank you for your support! ;D Charcoal, graphite and ink on paper. My inspiration for this piece is Jazz, pure soulful and uninhibited jazz. Easy and yet complex were the sounds that drifted from Louie’s trumpet. From his trumpet playing to his rich vocals, Louie’s music is a great inspiration to me. I try to capture his depth of character and defined talent through my portrait. I created countless layers of meticulous details conveying everything from the veins in his hands to his handkerchief and the gleam in his eyes that says, he loves what he does. My goal was to truly capture Louie’s soul. ...I can hear his voice singing the song “What a Wonderful Life”...every time I look at this image, which is what inspired me to draw this piece. Enjoy! • Portrait of Vincent Price

He was a teacher, an actor, a collector of art and a chef to name a few. He had a true philanthropists heart and was a man of many talents and a creative pioneer. He has left a fingerprint on our society and myself. In my portrait of Vincent, in every wrinkle I reproduced, in every mole I fastidiously drew and in every single hair I portrayed I see his achievements. There are many fine details in this portrait. You will see the veins in his eyes countered by the shine and drama I captured in them. You will see every wrinkle on his hand and every whisker in his mustache. It is designed to transport you back to the last film you may have seen him in and capture that vivid memory. As you study this piece you can almost hear his voice still speaking. ‘Atticus – ’ said Jem bleakly. ‘How could they do it, how could they?’ ‘I don’t know, but they did it. They’ve done it before and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it – seems that only children weep. Good night.’ / “Harper Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird” Open to interpretation – I’d love to hear what you think, and see if i got across the point i was trying to.. / The reference photo was taken by frixen on DeviantART (www.frixen.deviantart.com)

  • How did they call it in the Bible? A dale of deep darkness. I walk along the path of my life and the light goes out, the inspiration leaves, the inner voice silences, the passion extinguishes, the energy runs low. Life is like wading through a swamp that almost swallows me completely. I can hardly breathe. It gets darker and darker and I feel fear burning like a ball of fire in my stomach. I am afraid I am doomed, did everything wrong. The light disappears completely. I wonder what is left. Well, I am still there, in a terrible state of mind, but still there. My heart pumps, my lungs breathe. I am still alive. And now it all seems a little bit different. The light is not gone; it is just harder to reach it. But it is there, always there. Still feel frightened, but I have faith again. —-—-—-—-—-—-——- And now it is time to learn the cockpit flows of the Airbus A320 by head and do some serious flying. It can’t always be fun. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-— -Partial self portrait in charcoal and pastel. / -Photolayers. / -Digital freaking.
