After my initial (public) foray into the land of poetry recently, I thought it wise to educate myself a little more about the poet’s toolkit beyond a bit of basic rhyme and my own personal sense of what sounds OK. / / / / The article in Wikipedia was a great place to start, and helped me get up to speed with a bunch of interesting devices (and fancy words like alliteration, assonance, and prosody). It’s an amazingly diverse field, ranging from the minimalist haiku to the epic Greek tragedies through to the authentic Australian imagery of Dorothy Mackellar. / / / / One thing that struck me was the role of basic rules or parameters in defining particular forms of poetry. For example, ten syllables per line, with the 2nd and 4th line of each stanza rhyming. But there are countless possible variations. / / / / I think for me the appeal of poetry is the creative challenge of finding meaningful and compelling arrangements of words that fit a particular structure. The tension between structure and boundless possibilities is what gives birth to this creative form. / / / / On a similar note, I’ve heard others say they need a trigger or a deadline to really get the most out of their own creativity. If you just sit there awaiting creative inspiration, nothing much happens sometimes. But with a focus or theme, the magic starts to unfold. And what is a theme if not a simple form of structure?

I’m not big on competitions. Never have been. / But I feel strongly about climate change, so thought I’d ‘make’ a photo (the first time I’ve ever done so much Photoshop work!) and enter it into the Infinate Future Chaos comp. Here’s my entry.. Rather than concern myself with winning (but hey, lets face it, that would ROCK) I also hope a message is delivered along with my image and what I am trying to say. If we all make small changes we become part of large change – and I for one like the planet we have and wouldn’t mind seeing it stick around for a bit longer … Ask yourself what small changes can YOU make. Cheers / Kel P.S Ironically the beach in this shot is the Friendly Beaches on Tasmania’s East Coast. Not so ‘friendly’ now eh? ;-)

Dear RedBubble – Artist, Imagers, Creators and Photographers, I took up Photoshop about two months ago and this is my first attempt at artistic expression that went all the way from start to finish. I came close to trashing this piece because I suffer from perfection at times, even though it does not exist. I started on this project at the beginning of September for the RedBubble.com “Infinite Future Chaos” challenge. I have spent many nights not really knowing what this would become, let alone what the public would think. Now I am thankful to share this image with the world. To my “WatchListers” there will be more images to come, as I will target my photography and Photoshop skills. Remember this is my first shot at Photoshop. My next task will be to mix my creative expression with the superb Photoshop software. I tend to be a slow creator so be patient and look out for me !-) I will spread my “Visions” one way or another!

Just wanted to say a big thankyou to all bubblers for providing such a rewarding array of comments on ‘Escape Infinite Future Chaos’ for this competition. What’s more I sold the image and made the cover of the Griffith Review with it – can’t ask for a better result than that I guess….unless I win of course, no pressure Paul. Best of luck to everyone, Grant

The sky seems to unfold itself, as if in anger. No noise, just brilliant flashes of light. Flashes of light, miles into the air. Some, in a jagged haste, cut out into the horizon. The flashes light my pen, and my little boat. I have come here to watch the show, the spectacle that mother nature performs at her leisure. The water is so calm, unaware of the approaching rage. My small craft simply turns and rocks in the late summer breeze. / I watch as each bolt reaches me, by way of reflection. Each flash is mimicked by the mirror-like surface of the dark water. Calm is so priceless. But this calm, it sits next to chaos. Confusion for someone, somewhere else. Right now, this is my boat, my lake, and my calm. My beautiful calm. / Clayton Turner

Ok, the story I once uploaded, “The Seal of the Celestial Engine” has gone through some serious editing process, taking away a lot of stuff, removing more but also adding and correcting a lot as well. Moreover, it has changed so much compared to what I originally wrote that it looks almost like a completely different story. Hence why I shortened the title and practically tweaked a lot of the events occurring in the story. Now the posts will carry the F.S.M. tag. Fragment of the Shattered Mirror. This will shorten the title a lot and make it less like a tongue-twister and more like a pleasant reading. I’m thinking about making a couple of artworks related to this but my mind feels dry and blank at the moment and I’m extremely nervous and, well, not in the mood I guess. So, yes, so far here I offer the three fragments of the mirror I’ll upload for now. There are 11-12 in total, depending on how well RB’s writing template behaves with my text bricks: Part one Part two Part three Well, that’s it for now. It will get quite odd. And thanks for reading if you happen to read it.

Editing is a hard enough task, without the added problem of having a computer – the only computer that utilizes the sort of disk that your work is saved on – out of commission. Which is to say that I was using a Dell with a zip drive on it, when I published Chronicles of Ordine. I uploaded the PDF files for the book, not the .DOC or .RTF files, by the way. This is a point as, while it was helpful before, I am really kicking my own butt over it now. / So, a word of advice : upload both a PDF and some sort of Word type file when it comes time to publish, if at all possible. The PDF file ensures you get to use the font you want and saves time and trouble. But, you’ll need the other file to add the ISBN later. At the time, I had no reason to believe I would be needing to add the ISBN, since it was already in the PDF file for the softcover book and I couldn’t afford to publish the hardcover. Then, as it happens, my computer was hacked again and , as a result, I no longer had acccess to the internet via it. That was bad, but I got a new computer so that was better. Except that Lulu.com decided to run a special promotion wherein you could get the same thing for free that I just paid $99.00 for. Which was annoying, in that if I had waited, I could have got it for free and $99.00 is a LOT of money in my life. But, it was cool in that now I could get some more things published. Except, of course, that in the meantime, the electricity died in the office where I had been using the Dell. As a result, I had to move the Dell out of there and was intending to set it up in my room. Then, my father, feeling his manly Mr. Fix It urges, absconded with the Dell, muttering vagaries as to how he wanted to look at it and see about fixing it. The Dell, though, was perfectly fine except that it had no ethernet adapter drivers so that I couldn’t get online. I could use my disks on it, use the art programs on it, etc. It was wonderful in those sort of respects, and, since I have the new computer, I didn’t need it to be online. Right around the same time that my eldest son, who is learning disabled, decided to scratch the screen on my new computer, repeatedly, because he was upset at my other son and my son-in-law, I also found out that Dad did something strange to the Dell. He won’t explain it, but he says I can now have it back and maybe I can fix it, if I have the right product code number. He says he is unable to input it. I don’t know why that would be so, or why it would even be needed since I had reprogrammed the whole computer after wiiping the disk clean and that is how the ethernet adapter drivers were lost to begin with. None of this is unfixable. it is possible to replace the computer screen, with enough money. But, since I still have several hundred dollars to pay on the ever-so-brand new computer , it will be a while before I can afford a new screen for it – even if I could find one second-hand, which i hope to. With the proper disk, i should be able to get Windows Vista working on the Dell again. Maybe, just maybe, I’l even find the disk that came with the ethernet adapter one day. It’s just that all of this relies on time, money, luck, and patience; all of which are things that, except the latter, I have almost never had any of at all. Also, while all of this was going on, my youngest daughter went into the hospital for an operation because she had a cyst on her kidney. Oh, and had a baby before that. This has been going on a few months now, the computer fiasco extraordinaire. So, all in all, it’s been a real skippy great year so far. Oh, and I found out, just the other day, that the man that I was in love with – the only man I was ever truly in love with – who disappeared without even saying goodbye, had a fairly good reason for doing so, after all. So now I am feeling bad because I do believe I tore him a new arse, via email, over his disappearing act. Seems he had some sort of seizure, which affected his brain so that he went blind. So, yes, he probably had more important things to worry about then if I was missing him or what I’d think about him not talking to me for a good long whack of time. And Augles, the greatest writer alive, has been busy trying to die of cancer, getting assaulted by roommates, and trying very hard to get ran over. Which, between him and the other guy, I’m beginning to wonder if I don’t have some sort of curse going that causes men who enjoy my company at all to suddenly have their lives disrupt into total, often physically damaging, chaos. Date me and find out. I dare you! lol Whine, whiney, whine, whine, whine! I wasn’t really whining, honestly! Just, hmm .. explaining my life, a bit.

I, fairly recently, finally gave in to what, in some respects, was pressure from outside of myself and was, in other respects, pressure from myself alone and began reading the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz. I had been avoiding them because some people told me unpleasant things about how much his stories were like the ones I was writing about Ordine and Ordem. This began, most especially, after I changed the name of a small town from Cacafroon, as it had been since long before I had known who Douglas Adams was, to Piccolo Rancido (I hope I spelled that right) which means ‘small and rancid” Mr. Koontz has a town called Pico Mundu, or some such spelling, which means, apparently, small perfection. What is exceptionally odd about this to me, even more odd than that we’d both choose to use a smilar tactic when choosing names for towns (as we apparently have) is that I changed the name of the town in or about 1997. Or, maybe it was 1999. Whatever! The point is, it was quite some time before 2003 and 2003 is the year of the date when, according to the book I just finished reading, the series started being published. So I am not in the least worried, after having read the first book, that Mr. Koontz would ever look at what I have written and think “Oh, that’s just like my book!” because, no, it’s not. It’s not even close, except for that they both have humans who have parents, and they are written in English, etc. You could confuse Star Trek and Stargate easier than you could confuse ‘Odd Thomas’ with ‘The Sacred Beggar Boy’ as they have more similarities. What worries me is, how did these people know, in 1999 or before, what Dean Koontz books that were published in 2003 said? Maybe that’s what his next series will be about and, then, he’ll be a mystery writer extraordinaire!

So I think my kids are trying to kill me. I firmly believe this….I have 4 of them you know. Cooper, my third child who is two and a twin, is constantly taking his diaper off….or the lovely finger in the poop to let me know he has messed his diaper. Ick! .....My older, Annie, who is five, spent last weekend at her biological dad’s house thus making her a tired ornery butthead this week. Gotta love that…. Tyson, my youngest and Cooper’s twin, will not keep his oxygen on (long story short, the twinks were preemies and Ty had alot of lung damage. He is now trached and on O2, but is set to be off O2 by next spring and the trach out by the end of next summer. Woot!). I’m constantly chasing after him trying ot reconnect his O2 tubing just to have him pull it off just after I turn around. See, he’s congnitively fine and dandy, thus the rebeliousness…...and lastly, Jaxon, my second child who is 3.5 but the size of a 5 year old. He’s actually been my one and only child the last few days to be relatively good so far! So today’s favorite is a piece by Lisabella who has a series of Willowtree Angels. I believe I ran across this one yesterday because God was telling me to be patient. Thanks, Lisabella! / Angel of Patience by Lisabella /

3 days, 11 hours and 20 minutes… …Chaos and Anarchy 3 days, 11 hours and 20 minutes until Chaos and Anarchy will reign supreme… 3.11.20… …why were these numbers so significant? What did the dreams mean? Was it a coincidence that this was the flight number on my ticket? There it was, in black and white in front of me as I sat quietly in Riyadh airport waiting to depart on a long journey back to a land I had been away from for too long. It would only be a short stay in my beloved England, a visit to obtain a new visa before starting a new life away from the desert sands of Riyadh. This time to start a new life by the sea in the coastal city of Jeddah. There was much to look forward to… That was 3 days 12 hours and 20 minutes ago. 1 hour has passed. 1 hour since I was tricked into setting them free. 1 hour since Chaos and Anarchy slipped from the gates of hell, out from the underworld and into our green and pleasant land. I have never preyed before… but I prey now… God, help me! Why 3, 11, 20 and what did the dark circle mean? What was this black ring with a halo of red light in my dreams? If I was a sane man I would have left it alone, but I was driven by something beyond my sanity. Something pushed me to strive and want more. I had to find this place, find this dark portal and receive its offering. It spoke to me in my dreams… they spoke to me. Friendly voices promising gifts of wealth and knowledge beyond anything I could ever possibly imagine. I had to have it; I had to have it all. I had to find it… I found it. I found them They found me…

Anyway, I’m pretty happy just to have gotten the email, at this point! ....................................................... Went and looked it up, by my name, on Amazon.com It’s Chronicles of Ordine: Book I: Sacred Beggar Boy grin

Since I am long winded, I thought I would divide Part II of the story into sections – otherwise instantaneous blinding is likely to occur from page length alone. Let us begin… Friday, June 12, 2009 – Pumpkin finally wandered over to the porch. I hadn’t seen him for quite a while & was concerned by this. So, I scooped him up & brought him in the house. At this time, I had completely forgotten that we still had the travel carrier from when we had Widget. So, I am frantically trying to improvise something to put Pumpkin in that I can safely travel with him in the vehicle & that will be safe for him as well. I have many bags lying around but none of them are really going to contain him. I finally decide on my Critter Watch backpack. I put him in there & open up the zipper which has ties on both parts of it. I ties the ends of the zipper together and pull the zipper open enough so that he can stick his nose out of it. This way, he can both see out of it & I know he will have an adequate source of air; however, I also know he will not be able to come flying out of the bag like Kujo & cause me to have an accident while I am driving. I take him up to my vet office to see if there is anyone there who would be willing to take him. I am sitting in the front waiting & I unzip him & sit with him quietly on my lap. He is doing so very well. Anyone who didn’t know any better wouldn’t know that he is a feral cat. One of the techs comes out & tells me that no one can take him. My heart is pounding because I know that when I go home & let him out, it is likely that I will never see him again. The tech gives me a list of organizations & their phone numbers who can hopefully help me out. The list also has a website on it. I decide to drive by where I think the Humane Society is & I obviously don’t know where it is because I can’t find it. I bring him home & start looking at the list. I make phone calls. I look at websites. It is already late in the afternoon & I really can’t keep him in the house much longer. So, I let him out. While making phone calls, I reach a lady named Dr. Nancy Geren who tells me she is willing to help me under a few conditions. She doesn’t really have the room for the kittens because her organization is small but if I can meet the conditions, she will ‘do backflips’ to ensure the kittens are placed. These seem like colossal obstacles but I know they must be completed because she is the only person willing to help me to help the kittens. Her conditions are these: / 1. Mama needs to have a negative Combo Test. For those of you who don’t know what that is – it is a test for feline AIDS (HIV really) & feline leukemia. It is difficult to get accurate readings in kittens because testing kittens can produce false-positive results. The best & most accurate way to find out if the kittens are ‘clean’ is to test the mom. / 2. Mom needs to be spayed. – This is the core of Dr. Geren’s mission. She understands & tries to impress upon others by the way she selects who she will accept into her program that saving feral kittens only helps the kittens & doesn’t stop the root of the problem. I am in total agreement with this & had already planned to get Mama spayed before I leave regardless of whether or not I am able to place her in a home. / 3. I have to catch all 4 kittens to bring them all at one time. – I completely concur. It is best to keep them together as long as possible until the kittens are adopted. / 4. I need to get them in the house to begin to socialize them & train them. I completely concur. Now that I have spoken with Dr. Geren, I need to find a low-cost spay/neuter clinic. The Athens clinic out by her is extremely cost-effective; however, it is too far to drive. Since I am unemployed, I really need to find something closer. After a great deal of looking online, I finally find a place called LifeLine Animal Project. They are extremely cost effective & close enough to boot. I decide this is where I will take Mama to get her spayed, Combo tested, & get her her rabies vaccine. Sunday, June 14, 2009 – With the move, I am also struggling for funds. So, I gather up a tremendous amount of my books & catalog them. I look online for places that buy used books. There is only 1 place in town & they offer 20% in cash or 70% in store credit. Store credit is absolutely useless to me, so I have to take the lower amount in cash. This is just enough to get Mama Combo tested. Hurray!!
