Having been recently surveyed by Jo for her “Creativity” survey – I am now fulfilling my part of the “bargain” and bring to you one of the loveliest people I know!! Ladies and Gentlemen …. Anne Van Alkemade! How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? I think being creative, particularly in the sense of creating worlds in words, challenges me with a sort of duality (or even duelity) or having to live in both places and juggle which one takes precedence. Creative muses are jealous mistresses – if you don’t give them your full attention they go away and take their love with them but their love is so powerful that it is a prospect I can’t bear. And they will give you inspiration at the most inconvenient times. I am fortunate that most of the people in my life understand this and recognise the far away look I get at times. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful There are so many – it’s really hard to mention just one so I will go for the most recent. Meeting Cathie Tranent and Cathryn in Melbourne recently was a particularly wonderful event for me. I am not naturally gregarious and meeting ‘new’ people can be very daunting to me (if I don’t have my journo hat on) but the afternoon we spent together while relatively uneventful was wonderful. It really was like meeting old friends and picking up where we left off because we had a cyberspace ‘past’ in common. I felt so comfortable and happy in their company – just for fun’s sake. I forget to have fun often. Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you • I was invited by Robin Pushee to write poems for her beautiful mermaids and fairies and have done almost a dozen to date. I find these to be rather joyful little ‘tasks’ and my favourite so far is Oceans Natural which has provided the most inspired response from me. • I think the biggest smile on my face was recently inspired by GeorgieGirl’s Feathered Friends . It is such a gorgeous drawing with such warmth and happiness there. What a very fine achievement for someone to create something that can inspire someone else to really smile. • Chanel2’s Zebra Crossing is an unbelievably mythic image made all the more so by its reality. It is a beautiful piece and when I look at it I disappear into that otherworld in my mind where I sometimes find my own gems. • Guarding Diane is a piece by Elaine van Dyk which she posted at a time I was stuck on a pivotal chapter in my novel Cluesford (which had been serialised on Redbubble but I am now redrafting). The image was totally in keeping with the premise of my story about a town half ‘populated’ by ghosts going about their every day ‘lives’. Elaine’s wonderful image gave me that kickstart I needed to get on with it and finish (for once) my novel. • How remiss would I be if I didn’t mention at least one written work (can I be sneaky and mention two?). Bellmusker whose writing such as Scorpio is evocative and redolent with emotion has inspired courage in me to write several very personal pieces. / The second is an essential part of my life i.e. I love to laugh (who doesn’t) and the simplest things are always the best for this in my book. Danny has a wicked way and although not a great example of his very talented writing, Pull my finger is just the irreverent and twisted writing I just love. Sorry that I have missed so many other works. Redbubble is an inspiring and supportive place to be and I am revelling in my renewed drive to create.

During my recent visit to Melbourne, I was rapt to spend some time with the lovely Cathryn, also known as Chanel2. There were lots of things we didn’t get a chance to share during our natter, so what better opportunity ….... How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? I had never really embraced my creative side until just before I joined Redbubble , or so I thought, because when I think back to the things I was involved in with my girls’ growing up, I guess I have approached lots of things in a creative way. For example, some of the activities I would invent for us to do instead of watching TV, or constantly changing stories that I read them to match the pictures in the book better. This was a bit of a rod for my back because my husband would read the right stories much to the distress of my girls who preferred the ones I made up. I used to sew a lot too, being too impatient to follow a pattern I would usually make my own designs, I made some really cool children’s costumes this way. Driving has become a bit more dangerous too. Things I used to see and admire are now potential shots with interesting angles and lighting effects. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on Redbubble particularly special or meaningful. Nope, can’t do one…sorry… Kseriphyn / Cathie / Anne van Alkemade / are just some of the ones known to me, but these people who work, have family commitments, yet still give their time unselfishly and eagerly to help on here, while constantly creating is pretty amazing, and I think, very special. Show or tell us about 5 works on RB that have moved or inspired you. When I first joined I was forever showing people the works of the brilliant Paul Vanzella / It made me want to learn about this ‘photoshop’ I had never heard of before. We can walk on water, by sjames / Everything about this image I find inspiring, from the title, the setting, the model…I am just in my second year learning photography and hope to achieve this type of photography one day. Danny’s / story My Uncle Kevin / A very moving story that is still one of my favourites to this day. Which by the way isn’t in my favourites, which I must amend immediately. Mathew James / poem, / The Goodness in Me An awesome piece of writing. Cailean’s story, A Journey Home / A gorgeous story of hope and a wonderful reminder to me, that beauty is and always remains within our reach if we just stop and see. Doing a collaboration with the delightful and very clever raae / for Mothers Day / It was such fun to do and a great way to see an idea come together that you would not have been able to achieve on your own. It also made me want to start learning Illustrator, but I am trying to hold myself back till at least next year on that one……. Of cause there are others that have inspired, encouraged, helped and supported and they are all a part of what makes Redbubble such a wonderful community to belong to.

To tell you my daughter is happy with her hand made Lucan Tee from his noblesse-obligue range would be an understatement. Even the way Lucan presents his Tee with it’s torn seams and hand sprayed tag is a work of art in itself. The stencil comes up a real treat and I highly recommend anyone considering this option to go for it, you’ll be glad you did. Cheers / Cathryn

Yesterday I was privileged to meet the delightful Cathie on a whirlwind weekend trip to Melbourne. Melbourne came to the party with some beautiful winter sunshine and we set off to also meet up with the lovely Anne van Alkemade / / First we got the kiwi jokes out of the way while passing this spunk rat. Mr Cranky Pants was not impressed. Then Kylie passed by to say hi :) There was remnants of last nights dinner…. And this gorgeous lass. Then this guy showed up from Circuside and I over heard the littleun in bottom corner say “I don’t care how big your sword is, you aint getting my popcorn” Shame I missed the part when he said, “okay maybe you can”, it was when I took this one, I think? Or maybe this one… No,no I think this one. There was some lunch music. Always under the watchful eye of this guy, I’m not sure I trust him…. But most importantly, 3 people came together, whom without their creative sharing on redbubble, where their friendships were made, their paths may never had crossed. What a day, thanks girls. :)) Cheers / Cathrynxx

Hot tip :)

I was at The Berwick Cheese Factory yesterday, checking it out for out next family outing and as always I have my camera in the car. / So I decided to take a few snaps. I’m still trying to get my head around all the technical stuff in the camera but have managed to collect a few accessories with bdays, xmas e.t.c. / I’ve been wanting to do some HDR, as I really like this effect. / So with camera on tripod, I set it to AV, aperture at 22, iso 100, metering centred for first shot and use the plug in clicker thingy, so as not to disturb the movement of camera..check. So that’s it isn’t it? / I hit the clicker thing and nothing happens, so I start playing with the dials and the camera goes all freaky on me and starts focusing and snapping on it’s own. / I’m looking around to see if anyone else can see what’s happening, but there is NO one about, then I think, do I feel different? Is this what happens when you have one of ‘those’ encounters? I am after all in the perfect environment for it. I look up to see if perhaps a lace curtain has moved or maybe there’s a shadow in the window or something…nothing. / I keep turning buttons to try and make it stop, which only seems to make it worse, I’m beginning to think at this point, I should name my camera Christine(from a very scary movie about a possessed car) because quite frankly, I don’t think this camera likes me. / Then I look at the clicker thingy and aaaahh, it all makes sense, I have pushed it too hard and it’s locked on, why this function is there I have noo idea. / Anyway, crisis over, in the nick of time too, as I was beginning to wish I had bought a change of clothes. So, the hot tip is…. always take a change of clothes if you are out shooting on your own, hehe. Actually, no it’s not. The hot tip is IRONMAN with RobertspunkyDowneyJunior, is GOOD!! / I haven’t seen that much action after a movie since my brothers would kungfu everything on their way home from a Bruce Lee movie, and that was just the Dad’s ;) / Robot fans should like it, but bear in mind you absolutely have to go in without your logical brain on, like with the time travel movies. / I give it 8/10

An Interview with niggle
by Cathryn SwansonAfter having myself interviewed by the lovely “Cathie…
After having myself interviewed by the lovely Cathie Tranent it was then my turn to interview two other creative people here on Redbubble. Let me introduce niggle as my first with his natural take on his beautiful surroundings in his hometown of New Zealand. How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? Since being on RB and seeing the high quality of work here, you tend to judge your own work more against other RB members work. It forces you to try different things to get that one great shot, so in your everyday life it affects you because you are always looking, and trying for that special moment. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful? The one person that has made RedBubble special would have to be Chanel2 for introducing me to RB, as I have always liked photography but have never really pursued it. This is such a great site for an amateur photographer, with lots of support and encouragement. The most memorable moment was selling my first photo, that someone would want to buy my work was a great feeling and a boost in my inner self. Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you All the works I have chosen here, have taken my eye because of either colour, creativity, scenery, or effects: 1. Like Carpet,The Purpose has Been Pulled Under The Existence Of The Old Bush Hut At The End Of The Railway Line by Peter Kurdulija 2. Power Lines by Elana Bailey 3. Ocean Waves Rodeo Beach by Nancy Stafford IPA 4. Sheperds Delight by JennyDean 5. Melbourne Sunset by Chanel2 Thanks Nigel (as he is called in the ‘real’ world), it has been a pleasure. Stay tuned for my next creative bubbler to appear here in my journal very soon :)

WE DID IT!!!

It all started with a journal entry here / Thank you Lawford / So, I I took the plunge and rang Barry Ponchard up. He gave me a spot and said I could bring 2 more bubblers. / The gorgeous Lisa and sweetheart Kristy happily accepted the invitation. Then the nerves hit! Yikes! I swear when I woke this morning my esophagus was gone and my stomach was directly in my throat. Don’t ask me how many times I needed to go to the toilet because I lost count at 562 :) Anyway, I could go on and on…but I wont. The short version is, Barry was so happy with us that he wants to give us a monthly spot on the station. / How cool is that!! / So if anyone else is interested and would like the opportunity to read their stuff on the radio, let me know and we will try to share it around. A special mention to Mark whom also came along and was an absolute rock. HIGH FIVE!! Cheers / Cathryn

An interview with raae.

When told I had to do two interviews I had no hesitation in asking the delightful raee How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? Being a creative person has made me feel a bit of a black sheep since i was a fetus. I have never excelled at anything normal.. maths.. science. But i was always the kid everyone came too when it was time to draw Santa or kittens. In more recent times, i tried again to be normal by starting a degree in teaching. That went south when i realised there was snot nosed kids involved. I finally found my home amongst the other black sheep at the Queensland College of Art. Baaa.. Every job i’ve had up until now has made me want to poison myself on a daily basis. Working as a designer rocks socks. Being creative also means that i have trouble reading timetables, maps, detailed lists and instructions. That makes like rather hard. I get lost often. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful. One moment/person? Are you farking kidding me? Screw that… i have more than one person who makes this place special to me. Sjem / The very first person to watchlist me! Its cool when the work you admire comes from a person who is equally as rad. Not only do i love seeing the sporadic uploads of Sjem tees, i like hearing about how stressful and fun his bits of life are. We also think the Kings of Leon are hot. He isn’t gay though. Lucan / My RB Brother. We have been accused of being one person. His work is genius, his thoughts are MORE geniuser and his humor is the same as mine which is fucking great. He tells me when my work is shit – which i love. Heroine / My RB Sister. I often look at her work and think… there is something mentally wrong with you for putting in so much detail. Not only is she a super illustrator, she is a beautiful person who i wish lived a little closer so we could do coffee. (Or hot-chocolates.. i don’t drink coffee) Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you. This one / by Heroine This one / by Sjem Sjem This one This one / by Carrie. (I love Carrie too… she is fantastic) i LOVE LOVE this and this is farking hilarious. Thank you raae, you really do rock socks.

Once there were Dinosaurs.

Well, this is according to the guy driving the hovercraft, the many geologists and paleontologists that have studied this area in Broome, Western Australia. What I can tell you is, I definitely felt privileged to view them for myself and probably can’t tell you what a surreal feeling it truly was to be in the presence of this amazing piece of history. Because of this, I wanted to share with you the few photos I got. Our mode of transport, which was my first ride ever in a hovercraft….it was like flying over the water, very cool. Here they are in a row…... A bit closer :) Up closer and what you see here is how the underlying rock is indented which apparantly gives proof to the theory. If you look at the other rocks layers (above pic), they are all straight. The mysterious thing is, no dinosaur bones or any other proof have been found apart from these footprints and others, which are scattered about the area. / Because of this fact do we ponder their 130 million year(give or take a million according to the experts) theory. / Or do we wonder….just maybe, they were passing through…like me :))
