In July 2004 the City of Sydney and the NSW State Government cut down many of the old Moreton Bay Figs that made the Domain and Botanic Gardens beautiful places to be. The justification at the time was that there was a danger of branches falling on people’s heads, though it was later revealed that the tree removal eased the process of hiring out the venues for major events.

This is my DH, working hard to clear one of the many downed Trees from that Snow event last month. Being a Farmer, you will never have an issue about not exercising enough. / Photo was taken with my Evolt 510 camera on my NW Oregon Farm.

This tree needed a bit of trimming after the fires; branches which were severely burnt had to be cut off as with high winds they’re likely to just drop. Rob was a cheery guy. Up in this big tree, with his chainsaw, happily lopping off what needed to come off. Rob was the first person we spoke to when we arrived at the Bottle House museum. We walked around the back (as the sign on the door requests you to), and there was nobody about…...except rob; up in the tree. / Rob and I had a bit of a chit chat – him in his tree, with his chainsaw dangling and me on the ground a few hundred metres away. So…. maybe not quite much of a ‘chit chat’- more of a friendly banter ‘shouting match’?!? lol. Next door to the Bottle House museum, Kinglake; / 3 months after the 2009 Victorian bushfires. May 2009 Australia.

A botanist I’m not. This tree (it may well be a shrub) is growing alongside our deck. / Its new growth is an amazing shade of green and I fall for it every time. Its colour and contrast with the growth below it are striking. One of the leaves still has a residue of red dust from the huge dust storm we had in Sydney a month or so ago. / Best I cut it down so I can move on! (Best viewed large.)
