  • This is the finality of the series of Barbaras. / This Barbara in particular I met while working in a children’s home as well. She was picked up because of neglect. She cared for her younger siblings while her mother entertained boyfriends and did what whatever came to mind. When we got her she had to transition from being a parent and had to be taught to be a child. She refused to accept her role completely and as a result her parenting skills fooled the staff to believe that she was ideal to be a leader and influence the other impressionable residents. Barbara had done well and earned many priveledges that the other girls could only dream to have. One afternoon as I begun my shift, I saw about five other girls with Barbara sitting on the porch. She was teaching them something but became quiet when they saw me. I was interested and didn’t go in to even let my supervisor know that I was on the premises. Barbara, getting annoyed that I wouldn’t leave, proceeded with her lesson. The girls took out their pencils from where they were hidding them from me. They all resumes their previous positions. All had a certain part of their body to mark. I thought it was strange; not because of the markings, children do this but because of it being a pencil. I started to interrupt to ask whybut Barbara continued to explain to them and I watched as they turned the pencils to the eraser side to make a permanent mark on their bodies. They called it a ghetto tattoo. They were going to burn their skin until a mark appeared. Only what the girls didn’t know that some skin would bleed terribly while others would keiloy. It wasn’t until then did I really see how marked up Barbara had been and the other girls weren’t. Barbara told them that they would escape from the emotional pain if they marked themselves up in this way. Barbara lost some of her priveledges and she wasn’t considered as much of a leader with the staff as she had before. She needed more help then any of us thought. What did I learn? Where there is assumption, there is usually a huge space at the ready for error. This piece depicts the flower, bleeding heart for the obvious. I also used the quilt patterns, basement windows for how Barbars felt in her life. The chains and collar represent the captivity our parents can put us in, but it takes the decision to come out of that. This was made on 12×12 Strathmore drawing paper with fine point black ink and colored markers.
