This plant is called a Cereus plant, or “Queen of the Night”. / It only blooms perhaps once a year, ONE NIGHT a year, and usually opens up late at night soon after midnight with my experience. This is the second year it’s bloomed, and it’s really an awesome few hours to see her in all her glory, for in the morning, she closes up, and she is done. There were two blooms that opened up the same time. It’s truly an honor to be in her presence, because it’s SO easy to miss this beautiful bloom! By tbealle

The Cereus Night Blooming cactus is a splendid flower to behold. This one opened up around 11 p.m. and filled the night air with an intoxicating fragrance. It’s amazing to think that a lowly cactus plant which is not particularly attractive could produce a flower of this magnitude. The ugly duckling that produces an elegant swan! This side view is part of a series I’m adding to the RB portfolio.

This is a one-night blooming flower called “Queen of the NIght” or the “Night Blooming Cereus”. Now this was a magical moment late at night outside on my deck. I saw the bulbs drop down from the leaf earlier in the day, so I stayed up late in anticipation to see this flower bloom. Boy did it bloom beautifully. It was unbelievable. I can’t wait to see it again next year! I will add the front view briefly…

The Night-blooming Cereus, Scientific name Epiphyllum oxypetalum, only blooms at night, and lasts for one night only. Therefore it is often used as a metaphor to describe fleeting things. The chinese words translate to: / “You are like a night-blooming Cereus appearing for just a moment, and disappearing before my eyes like a snowflake.” Comments and critiques are welcome. Thank you.

This is a tropical plant, Night Blooming Cereus. It blooms once a year, usually in the summer, and only at midnight. It takes about 4-5 days from small bud until it’s fully opened around midnight. Its bloom is spectacular – anywhere from 10-12 inches across and its aroma fills the night air. This image was turned on its side to present more effectively. It grows on the photographer’s front porch in South Carolina.

A night blooming cereus (Cereus Greggii) is called the Queen of the Night but I think it should be Goddess of the Desert it is so beautiful. This plant in the cactus family produces a beautiful blossum from something that looks like a stick. Sonoran Desert, Tucson, Arizona, USA, 2008.
