I just started a B&W Film course at the ACP . Our teacher is Marco Bok who is a great photographer. I am learning about developing, printing, enlarging Film. It is something I have never learned. In the first lesson we did enlarging in the darkroom which was very exiting. Putting my “Rayograph” (We did not have any film yet to develop so we whacked some objects on the paper and switched on the enlarger. a technique invented by Man Ray .) into the developer and seeing my creation emerge out of nowhere was amazing. A new love was born. I will post my best shots during this course to the site starting from next week, including my first attempt at rayography. Hope my scanner still works… It has been sitting in a box for 3 years… I hope you have a look once a while and join me on my journey…

A second way to show support to Axel's family-donations

Dear all. As we have received much kindness and giving towards the / Moore family, we have enough pledges towards a print to give. We will list all those who donate to both the print and to the emergency help fund, which will either go in the memorial book, or with the print. This is a fantastic reflection on you, who have demonstrated the caring nature of this community. Many people have expressed disappointment in not being able to make their contribution, so I researched and found a way to do so on paypal. (also inc’d in the previous journal entry.) There are a number of unexpected expenses the family has incurred due to the event, such as the Careflight helicopter coming out, and time off work. These things put an added pressure on a family at times such as these. The paypal system is easy, using their email address, which is family@origoblue.com.au Account name Glen Moore The link to paypal is here All ways of contributing to the family are greatly appreciated, and really make a difference to their lives. It is a really positive way to help someone when you’re not sure ‘what you can do”-here is another way. Thank you all for your generosity. kind regards xsunset

/ Took up MB (artworks)’s suggestion. “Do a series” she suggested, after she saw my first version of Remi, the the main character in the book: “Alleen Op De Wereld” (Alone in the World), written by Hector Mallot , with the title: Sans Famille. / / So I chose another illustration from the book and started, at home, the other day. / / Today, I took it to the Dutch Australian Cultural Centre, where I was filling in for another board member and passing the time with painting. / / . / . / / There were _some visitors today!!

Hi everyone, I have just finished my B&W Course at the Australian Centre for Photography (ACP) in Paddington. There is going to be an opening for an exhibition on Wednesday, starting at 6pm with a selection of Photos from the Term 3 Students, that participated in the courses at the ACP. The Gallery is located at 257 Oxford Street, Paddington. I am inviting everyone to come along and have a look, there is also one of mine there. More of my B&W work from the course will be posted to “The Bubble” shortly. I’ll keep you updated. On another note for all the film-enthusiasts; they are still looking for people to join their Fine Art B&W Printing Classes to be held 10 Mondays from 6:30pm to 9:30pm, starting from the 24th of September. Marco Bok runs the classes, he is a fantastic photographer, whose work I truly admire. It would be great if some of you Bubblers could fork out the cash and come along, it is really worthwhile, and as an added bonus (or deterrent) you get to meet me… Cheers, Alex Please also visit my website alexkess.com and my photoblog .

Olivia Newton-John is currently involved in a fund raising campaign to build a cancer centre in Melbourne, Australia. To assist in raising the awareness of the appeal, I’ll be donating all profits from sales between May 11th to 18th, 2008 on the autumn image collection below. The images were recently taken during the 2008 Bright Autumn Festival in Bright, Victoria, Australia. Most of us in our lives will be in some way affected by cancer, so I call on folks to consider a purchase of one or more of these works and help support Olivia in her quest. If you live near enough, and it is a sunny day, and you like photographing architecture, Salford Quays is as good a place as any to take your camera. / / The NW Group’s first meeting was on a grey, rainy day. Nonetheless, below are a few shots. / / Jan (gothgirl) and I waited just inside the Lowry Centre. I’d taken a couple of red balloons (the nearest thing to red bubbles I could find) and much to the amusement of the reception staff, who were most helpful by the way, Jan and I set ourselves a little pitch. / / We were joined in due course by Dave Robinson and Mike Finley and had some coffee and chat, went round the Lowry Gallery, watched the ‘Meet Mr. Lowry’ presentation – a really interesting insight into the artist as a man – and then, catching a lull in the rain, wandered around snapping shots, as you do! / / Here are a few of mine: / / / / / / / / / / / / /

END . . . Week 3 of Hell

And so we come to the end of another week, one in which there were only a couple of real highlights. So, read on . . . . On Tuesday, we went to a shopping centre in one of Melbourne’s upper class suburbs. It was supposed to be only about an hour, maybe an hour and half job. It ended up taking just over three hours! When we got there, I was going to go with him just to be occupied, but, upon being shown the stairs I would have to climb, I decided that sitting in the car was far more attractive – those stairs were about 20 – 25 feet up and almost vertical. I didn’t think my knees would make it halfway up!!!! Boy, was I bored for every one of those three plus hours. The rest of the day was very ordinary domestic jobs that were fixed quickly. On Wednesday, though, we had to go back to the shopping centre. THIS time, i decided I was going to tackle the stairs and if I didn’t make it, at least I had tried; and I would have an excuse to wander through the shopping. If I spent anything, oops that was an accident! Well, I made it; then i had to walk from one end of the centre to the other across the roof. This took place on specially constructed paths that twisted, turned, went up and down a few steps here and there, dodging other equipment and protruberances from the roof and with short side shoots that led to other equipment. By the time we got to the point in question, I think we must have walked at least twice the length of the centre. After about an hour and half of being fried by the sun – no shade up there – and alternately bored by the lack of anything to do and frustrated by the denseness of the “qualified” electrician who had asked us to come in, I decided to go back to the van. Having had my sense of direction thoroughly confused by the past three weeks of driving all over the countryside, this took a bit of time. I was quite pleased with myself, though, I only took three wrong turnings and, each time, it only took a moment to realise that I had turned the wrong way. Going down those stairs was a little worrying – they were narrow and very steep, so, the only way down was backwards. I hung onto those handrails with a death grip. We then had three jobs spread out down the coast. Oops, Mrs Fangio escaped! Finally, I could put my foot to floor and let the breeze cool me down – HE keeps turning the airco off, says menopause must be worse than I’m letting on! The cheek of the man! I ain’t saying’ nothin’. (Nasty little smile here!) The second one of these jobs was like a breath of fresh air – the lady of house actually understood mechanical things. (She told us her father had been a German mechanical engineer.) And she was a lovely lady, to boot! Mrs Fangio had a wonderful day in the country but, boy was she sore that evening – too much stair climbing, I think. Ooooooh, my thighs and knees are so stiff and sore, it’s hard to sit down or stand up, although once I’m down or up, the pain is bearable. Mrs Fangio went to bed sore but happy with a day in which her love of speed was temporarily satisfied! Thursday morning dawns – I just about fell out bed my legs were still so stiff and sore. A relatively simple day was on the books, so, to keep me happy, he allowed me to drive my car – much more comfortable: the imprint in the seat is MY not-so- delectable-anymore derriere, not HIS! He put a selection of the usual things needed to fix the expected problems, along with a few other not so commonly used bits, in the back of my wagon and off we went. Nothing unexpected happened but, his mobile kept him distracted often enough to make him wish the battery would go flat!!!! Friday being Good Friday, no work, instead we went down the coast to Kilcunda, to see if the wind was strong enogh to whip up some decent surf. I had expected that most people taking a long weekend would have left Melbourne on Thursday evening/night but, it appeared not. About an hour from home, there is major road work and you are reduced to a single lane each way. This caused a massive backlog and a trip that should have taken us maybe about an hour and a half, took nearly two! Finally, we got there. The surf wasn’t as spectacular as he’d thought it would be, but, I took a few photos and enjoyed the wind blowing everything around. On the way home, we were soon glad that we’d left earlier in the day (about 11.00 a.m.) – the traffic was bcked up to about Koo wee rup. If we’d been caught up in that, I would have turned ‘round and gone home. Now, here it is, Sunday night – my legs are still stiff and sore, but they’re much improved; hopefully Monday night will see them as close to back to normal as they can be. Stay tuned for the next installment . . .

My Dutch-Australian heritage. Worth keeping? Did I waste a Sunday?

Someone on the board of our Dutch – Australian Cultural Centre could not take his turn, minding the…..what is it? ....collection….today. So I volunteered, again. / It’s all now kept, behind the restaurant, behind the mini Dutch supermarket, in the light industrial area, a little distance away from the Smithfield shops, in western Sydney. / A reasonable number of people, with some Dutch connection, come to the shop, in Market Street, behind the fake Amsterdam street facade, hiding the factory space, where our Dutch culture is kept alive, especially on Sundays. / When my Sydney-born children were small and Saint Nicholas was as real as Santa Claus. (Lucky kids got two lots of presents, every December.), I used to go to ‘the Dutch shop, at least once a year, to buy the appropriate, traditional goodies (chocolate letters, marzepan, ‘pepper-nuts’, etc..) / Now the Dutch Australian Cultural Centre has moved in, after being moved out of the purpose-built premises, beside the Abel Tasman Retirement Village facilities, in Chester Hill. / Of the people who find their way to the shop, in Smithfield, a reasonable number settle down in the little restaurant to have some Dutch delicacies (croquettes, herring, etc..) and just a few of these venture into the furniture section and let curiosity get the better of them, to see what is behind the partition, through the open door, where I have the little radio play classical music, transmitted by the ABC, as loud as possible, to let them know we are there! / I fill my time by painting pictures or reading some of the material. (Today my painting was not ready to be worked on yet.) A lot is about migration etc.. / I picked up something historical. It was about how we migrants were received, via accommodation, called ‘hostels’. Usually former army camps, e.g., Bonegilla, near Albury. I should not have picked it up. It gave the impression that we migrants (It particularly mentioned my cohort, who came here as children, in the mid-50s.) were well-looked after in sparse but suitable accommodation and how (we) children were catered for by being given appropriate education. / Although it DID mention that a lot of mothers cried and that quite a few children had died. / Why is it so hard to give a true picture? I guess it’s too complex. / Still. I wouldn’t have liked to have spent the last 50+ years, still (continuously) in the Netherlands. Thoroughly enjoyed living in Australia and it was in Matraville Hostel that I discovered I could draw when a lady proudly pointed to her daughter’s framed drawing, on the wall and I realised that I could do that too. / It has often been said that the great-grandchildren of migrants, the 4th and 5th generation show an interest in what their (great-) grandparents went through and brought to the country. / Hopefully the DACC will last that long!! In the industrial area, through the shop, through the restaurant, around the furniture, in the corner: the DACC- Take a look.

Hi all. I recently received some redbubble stuff that I ordered for Christmas. One was a self designed t-shirt >for me, and the other a calendar, > a gift. The calendar itself, as redbubble product is great. stylish, well packed and well done. The actually prints were as seen on screen. Unfortunately, as deceived by the back light of the computer screen, they looked brighter there, then when printed. I found myself disappointed. The t-shirt was disappointing for a couple of reasons. Again-quality, fine! When I ordered it, I ordered a print I thought I liked. Since ordering, I did something better. From previous experience, I thought what was on screen at the time of printing, not ordering, was what you got. So, I changed the image, hoping I would get that instead of what was there when I ordered. (are you with me?) Alas, I learnt-it is what is on screen at the time of ordering that gets printed. Again-this is probably a good thing of redbubbles-what if an artist deletes, or changes an order unbenounced ( that is a word, I swear!) to the purchaser? ( I could’ve tried contacting RB..I thought they’d be way too busy w chrissy) upon trying on this alternate image-I also noted the design must be catered for women-mine is strategically in the wrong place ie more in the middle of the t rather than up high. (I’m so embarassed, I can’t wear it). Very unflattering. So I learnt a few things -make sure what you order is exactly as you like it. (duh) / -artists, make things a little brighter to keep the colour nice / -t-shirt designers-ensure your image is a little higher than you think…perhaps even measure on yourself to get the centre of the design ‘above the nipple line’! _______ on that note, I was very nervous to deliver an order of 4 t-shirts. (they didn’t trust the internet!) please god, like them, let them be awesome! ...and they are! the parents are very happy their boys will be dressed in t-shirts for their life to come (small in mens is HUGE!) and I am very very relieved.

Yesterday was Father’s Day and, as a little treat for me, I got taken out to somewhere while I could be let loose with my cameras: the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby, Lincolnshire. As luck would have it there was also a model aircraft flying display on too so there was more to photograph than just the centre itself (which, if you’re in travelling distance, is worth a visit alone — especially if it’s a weekend when Just Jane is doing one of her taxi runs. The weather was a bit mixed, with plenty of stormy-looking clouds hanging around, but that’s often a good thing as it means the sky looks far more interesting than if it had been clear blue. It was a great day out and you can see the final album of photographs over here. And, to top it all off, I also got a copy of Martin Parr’s Think of England as well as a book about Martin Parr (which includes a wide selection of his work). I also got a copy of A Pig With Six Legs from The Cloud Appreciation Society. :D

anti gravity / denis darzacq and “I throw myself at men” / lilly mcelroy god, this is so inspiring. I wish I d done it myself-it’s not like the thought hadn’t crossed my mind-but the last time I took a photo in a supermarket was 1994… (and they were great! I don’t know if my sister would still still two humungous balls of wool up her top and pretend to dance with them, but I have evidence on film that she once did!) plus, someone who must’ve read my mind as a kid. I was an architect in year 3 and designed houses like this! (of course, much planning, didn’t decide to be one officially in adulthood/do all the study) I went further-the water feature out front came inside and in places there was like glass over the top you could walk on and see them below. Plus a sunken lounge area with a pond feature! here are the designs some made for real

A Manly view of Art.
by Ozcloggie/ This is the view, from my car, parked near the Manly Art Gallery & Museum…
/ This is the view, from my car, parked near the Manly Art Gallery & Museum, situated on Sydney Harbour, four minutes walk from Manly Wharf. Opened in 1930, by Manly Council. Apparently, it was the first metropolitan regional gallery in NSW. Now, said to be a popular destination for thousands of local, interstate and international visitors each year. / / Fellow boardmember (DACC) and artist, Thea Bourne, had invited me to come along to a talk, given by four different artists. / / Hers, was one of four. / The first was by Nathalie Hartog-Gautier, who showed us how she relates to the experience of people from Europe, arriving in Australia, focusing on La Perouse, the French explorer. / If you have read any of my writings, on the internet, you will know how I have, so often taken visitors, on my so-called Nostalgia Tour, starting at the suburb of Sydney, called, La Perouse. / (My daughter, who thoroughly enjoyed her stay in Paris,) was so pleased to photograph the monument there, acknowledging the arrival of La Perouse, all those years ago. / lan Waite F.R.A.S., A.W.I., spoke next. / / Particularly about a group of friends, now known as “Plein Air Painters of Australia”. / He was followed by Thea Bourne, who has dedicated a decade’s work to producing large, charcoal drawings, based on fragments from an aboriginal midden, to express her love of the land, called Australia, and her personal connection with its origin and culture. / / and then there was Mike Sargeant, beside whom I’d found an empty chair, when I had arrived , just in time, to hear the speakers being introduced, but not realising he was one of them. / / All right! His take on art, vaguely reminded me of driving along the central coast and seeing too many swans, in gardens, made out of rubber tyres but he certainly connected with the audience, as he explained how he turns junk into ART!! / / A most diverting, and interesting evening. Thank you, Thea, for inviting me!! /

The art group I belong to is having a one week exhibition at Gallery 6 Walter Reid Cultural Centre Derby St Rockhampton. / It started on Thursday night. / Lots of people came and ate the food and drank the wine and went home happy. / No sales as yet – is it the economy kicking in or just this is not an art buyer’s town?
