Completed in 2004, age 17 This is a slightly cropped version of the original, due to the limits of my camera. My original signature got cropped out so I had to insert a new one in photoshop; in the original it is not actually located there. Original size: (40” x 30”) The two subjects are posed in similar positions, each having a dark, circular central focus., Both images have lines above and surrounding the centres, which draw attention towards the centres. The vertical composition help strenghten the feeling of height given by the vertical lines. Both subjects are organic, however one, the eye, has straight lines and geometrical shapes, while the rose has curvy lines and organic shapes. In the eye, the centre is literally dark, while in the flower the darkness is created by shadows. / “The Centre of Your Soul is part of the Abstract Collection..look closely and the brush strokes will seem to coalesce into the imagery expressed in the poem... / I started to create the work with the poem running through my head, and as the brush moved across the paper, the abstract image emerged at the same time as the water, garden, and river made their presence known. / It was exactly as I wanted it to be…a feeling of great depth, a submergence of self, and surrender to the soul. Watercolour and Watercolour mediums on Arches Not Paper… There is a quiet water / In the center of your soul, / Where a son or daughter / Can be taught what no man knows. There’s a fragrant garden / In the center of your soul, / Where the weak can harden / And a narrow mind can grow. There’s a rolling river / In the center of your soul, / An eternal giver / With a rich and endless flow. There’s a land of muses / In the center of your soul, / Where the rich are losers / and the poor are free to go. So remain with me, then, / To pursue another goal / And to find your freedom / In the center of your soul.. J. Kavanaugh
I think this is the first time I was able to get as close as I was to this beautiful fellow. I was so pleased when I uploaded it onto the computer and saw the results. Believe me this has had selective colouring on the shot it is just that the owl is mainly white. The original shot was taken in The Cornish Birds of Prey Centre & Animal Park in Cornwall. I have been playing about with it again; a crop here to focus tight on his beautiful eyes and selective colouring there and this is the result which I love. I hope you like it and thank you for viewing. The selective colouring was made in Photoshop Elements 6 NIKON D60 DSLR / F-stop f/9 / Exposure time 1/500 sec / ISO speed 100 / Aperture priority / Focal length 190 mm on a 70 – 300 mm Nikon lens All the materials contained may not be reproduced, copied, edited, published, transmitted or uploaded in any way without my permission. Centre Place, Melbourne, Vic, Australia. March 2009 Due to the darkness in the laneway, I needed to use the camera’s highest ISO (1600) to get a half decent shutter speed, which created some noise. However, I think it still works OK in this shot. Camera: Canon EOS 450D / EF50mm f/1.8 II @ 1600ISO / Shutter: 1/160 / Aperture: f/1.8
