I can forgive but I can’t forget. My thoughts and prayers are with the survivors and with all those who lost loved ones, and those who lost property and their dignity as a result of this horrific day. It seems like yesterday and is still difficult to talk about. It’s hard for me to comprehend that a whole generation of Americans have grown up with little or no memory of this day. This is the Century Theater complex at the corner of Central Avenue and 1st Street in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It incorporates elements of Route 66 neon and the pueblo deco architecture made famous by the landmark Kimo Theater, located just down the street from here. This new complex anchors what has been an aggressive downtown revitalization project that has been partly financed by windfalls from Route 66 Corridor Preservation Act of 1996. Federal grants and state and local tax incentives have enabled city planners to capitalize on the Route 66 mystique and breathe new life into what had become a rather seedy looking downtown area just 10 -15 years ago. Now, it is a high-energy destination spot for tourists and locals alike, and its streets sing with the buzz of neon, the rumble of motors, and the hubub of pedestrians. This view of the 911 memorial lights taken from Brooklyn heights has been enhanced to bring the docks and path on the Brooklyn side into a sharp contrast. The lights of the Brooklyn Bridge connect the City and in the distance, barely visible the current tallest building in New York, The Empire State. Stephen Siller, beloved husband and father of five, was a firefighter from Squad 1, Park Slope Brooklyn. On 9/11, he was off-duty, and on his way to golf with his 3 older brothers. When Stephen heard on his scanner that the World Trade Center had been hit, he turned his vehicle around and headed towards the site. When his truck was prohibited from entering the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, typically of him, he raced on foot towards the site with his gear strapped to his back. He was last seen alive on West and Liberty Streets where he, more than likely, went looking for his Squad, all of whom perished. The Tunnel to Towers Run retraces Stephen’s footsteps on that fateful day. In running along his path, we honor the memory of all the Firefighters, Police, and EMS workers who performed their duty that day. In running this race, we are reclaiming still another part of the city for all our heroes and for all of those who died on 9/11. They will never be forgotten!
