  • Because of copyrights it is not possible to show an image with the use / deformation of the olympic rings in order to expose ideas about the Chinese politics. This limit however has helped to come up with this idea. The shirt could be usefull as a sport outfit in prisons as well… Other publicity / campaigns / contributions about the Beijing Olympics you can find here collected by a Dutchman in the advertisement world and here collected by Redbubble member Robinson. In my zazzle shop you can find the same design showed on different models, colours and the backside printed with logo and instruction. I’m yet again back on on here looking for some answers after being asked to remove stuff again. I just can’t seem to get it right. Please don’t get me wrong- I don’t want to offend anyone but I’m actually finding it quite difficult to get the right balance. In the past I’ve put up work I think is tasteful or subtle or that has a lot of artistic merit and been suggested to remove it. I put up stuff today that this very afternoon was viewed and commented on by primary school children with their mother present and yet I post it on here and got emails from two people about it’s appropriateness. I’m at the point where if I get one inappropriate comment from someone I freak out that I shouldn’t have posted it. HEEELLLP! I guess what I’m finding so upsetting is that I seem to be unable to predict what is going to upset people. If that is the case, I need some sort of guidelines to work against. I’m also probably extra sensitive about taking stuff down- I’ve never been ‘told to’ but if someone says that it’s concerning them, of course I remove it straight away. I don’t think I’ve ever posted anything “disturbing” and certainly nothing violent. And as I said before, artwork that a mother happily showed her primary aged school children this afternoon caused a problem when I posted them this evening. I just can’t win. It’s really upsetting. I’m basically not going to upload any more work with a person in it until there is some sort of decision about this. I’m not prepared to keep risking it. Can anyone offer some solid suggestions on what you would consider “too much” for a public site because this is starting to get too hard for me. I’m probably coming across as irrational or melodramatic but it’s starting to really upset me that I keep upsetting other people. That’s the last thing I want to do.

  • All the protests around travelling the world with the olympic flame prove how serious concerned people are about censorship, politics and human rights as being practiced in China. Like in history France did to the USA i was thinking about the Statue of Liberty as a gift by athlets to the Tibetan people, taking both their opportunity to speak loud with all the media attention at this moment. I understand it is difficult to pronounce the word freedom! In my zazzle shop you can find the same design showed on different models, colours and the backside printed with logo and instruction. Plus they print larger and their quality of printing is very good! And some others…

just fyi, from a list I’m on … Australia to Require Mandatory ISP Filtering of “Inappropriate” Content http://lauren.vortex.com/archive/000352.html Greetings. Can excessive ultraviolet light exposure cause brain / damage to politicians? One might think so after reviewing the / Australian government’s plan to require ISPs to perform / Chinese-style blocking of Internet sites that the government / considers to be “inappropriate” for children—based on a / government blacklist / ( http://www.australianit.news.com.au/story/0,24897,22989956-15306,00.html ). Down in the merry old land of Oz, this mandatory blocking would / apply by default to all home and school Internet subscribers. ISPs / would have to be contacted individually by users who wished to / obtain an unblocked feed by being added to an opt-out list (which I / suspect would rapidly become known as the “pervert list” by the / Australian overlords of Internet decency). I won’t insult your intelligence by listing here the myriad / reasons - you know them as well as I do - why such a plan is doomed to / failure (but I will note that even the so-called “Great Firewall of / China” Internet blocking infrastructure leaks like a sieve—and / that’s in an environment where penalties can be very harsh indeed). Obviously, what we’re actually looking at in the Australian case is / political grandstanding of the most base sort. To make censored / feeds available upon request is one thing, but to make censorship / the default and then require persons to specifically identify / themselves to opt-out is turning the concept of freedom of / communications on its head. Speaking of heads, it wouldn’t hurt the politicians down under to / stay out of the summer sun, or at least wear hats more often. Fried / brains are not conducive to the creation of sensible Internet (or / any other) policies. And since the inane COPA and similar Internet / censorship laws are still bouncing around the courts here in the / U.S., the same prescription might well apply to our own politicians / as well. “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?” -Lauren- / Lauren Weinstein / lauren@vortex.com or lauren@pfir.org / Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / http://www.pfir.org/lauren / Co-Founder, PFIR / – People For Internet Responsibility – http://www.pfir.org / Co-Founder, NNSquad / – Network Neutrality Squad – http://www.nnsquad.org / Founder, PRIVACY Forum – http://www.vortex.com / Member, ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy / Lauren’s Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com

RedBubble’s decision to censor works of political criticism that feature the US flag is to be strongly deplored. The works criticised the policies of the US as promulgated by their president and in no way insinuated that any other individuals were to blame. They can be seen > probably for the next nanosecond > here I am unwilling to continue to contribute to an online community that bows to the lowest common denominator and folds at the first whinge from narrow-minded bigots. Redbubble directly profits from the development of community – but if it cannot be trusted to uphold reasonable freedom of expression then it should not profit from the creativity of those it will not support. When Mick’s work is removed, I will be removing my own. I ask everyone of good faith and belief in freedom of expression to do the same. I will also be writing to redbubble’s admin to make my case and explain why I think that they are wrong.

Hey all you artists out there! / i am writing this 5 minutes after i got a phone call from the lady who owns the place where my art is currently on exhibit….. / She is very upset that she is being forced by opinions of some ot the patrons of her restaurant to have me remove one of my paintings and replace it with something less controversial! the painting in questions is this…. / La Raison / I am so upset about it especially in these times we are having! Does no one have anything better to do than pick on us artists… I mean HELLO! The world economy, the election coming up in 2 weeks… For crying out loud!!! / Apparently a woman has been coming in every day and leaving a card on my painting for the domestic abuse hotline….. sooooo passive aggressive! This woman obviously has a very narrow view and is now forcing her opinion on others, making them feel uncomfortable and censoring me!!!! I am trying to empower women not belittle them with my art! Way to take my power away lady! / ok more on this later! xoxo Laurie / Oh i can’t tell you how it makes me feel, well yes i can! Mad

I have recently had this comment discarded from a discussion on Redbubble – I have no idea why as not only was it completely relevant to the topic, but was also in response to another persons post. Ironically, the discussion was about censorship and how it is a bad thing?? So, I have decided to start the discussion here instead, as all of my contributions to the original discussion are likely to be deleted. Here is the comment I made and I would very much like this discussion to continue, in a place where I can participate – the subject is important to me as those who know me will already know. Julie Langford , 17 minutes ago in response to this / / And yet poverty still exists in so many places in the world. Many programs have been instigated all across the globe to try and eliviate the problem, very few of them work. The question is why? I wrote This is a good question xxxxxxx, and one which interests me greatly when it comes to activism. I give a substantial amount of time in voluntary work to the conservation of primates – the great apes in particular. There are many groups that share enthusiasm for this work, from anti poaching, armed guards in the protected forests of Africa, right down to school teachers who teach about the apes, both in Africa and the West. I have heard many an activist cry out the simple sentence – Stop killing apes, aimlessly, without thinking why people aren’t listening to them. The fact is, it is easy for a lot of people to say this, when they havent got to worry about where the next family meal is coming from. It is easy for more advantaged people to say it, when they have some creature comforts and dont have to risk their lives and that of their children everyday by drinking water that will kill them. Instead of standing up and shouting Dont do it – why not look for alternative ways for the hunters to make a living, and help them achieve it. Alternative livelihoods need to be promoted and education given on how to improve living standards for families provided. Education to halt the bushmeat and pet trade in exotic apes and monkeys needs to be promoted. No matter how much a person doesnt like the action of these hunters, unless they can communicate and get the message over that there are better ways to earn a living, and then go on to help with projects to promote these alternatives, whats the point in saying – Oh, dont do it, or shouting about it! How do you feel about activism? Do you think it works? Do you think that simply stating what you think, without thought of how to achieve things will work? Is it better to communicate on the same adult level, rather than shout down people who oppose your view? I personally think its good to talk, and when people disagree with a view, now matter how strongly you feel about it – you are more likely to have a chance at getting that opposing view to change, even if only a tiny bit, by talking in a civil manner. ALL comments are welcome! There will be no censorship by way of deletion of any comment that is part of the discussion – whether it opposes or agrees with any view within the opening post of this journal, or in the comments within it. No personal attacks, or naming and referencing peoples work without their persmission will be tolerated [no matter who they are by, or who they are directed at] and will be reported – however, they will not be deleted by me – if attacks do take place, they will be left for Redbubble to delete, or request deletion by me. If you do want to quote people in here, or make reference to their work outside of this journal at all [other than their original post in here to reference your response] please seek their permission. I will not participate in censorship against anyone for their view here, nor will I shout at, scream at, or attack them. I will however, ask people to play nice and report attacks against anyone, to Redbubble staff.

Hi Everyone, I have had a couple of emails about my posting content that is not safe for workplace viewing. I thought I would write about my views on the subject. I love beautiful things and I love freedom and equality. When I photograph I endeavour to capture the most beautiful subjects I can find. Further I then try to present them in the most beautiful and humble way. I believe material things can be exceptionally beautiful and also feel they possess an inner energy that can reach those who behold them with open minds. My favoutite passions are women and automobiles. I have other passions that I love to photograph but these seem to have the most impact for me. I receive little if any sensorship re my cars but often am questioned about my shots of women. More often than not this attention is not related to pose or style but to if a nipple or vagina is shown. I really cannot understand how showing a certain body part in a beautiful light can be dangerous to anyone. Would it be safer if it was a painted nipple or a photo of a nipple behind a tigh tshirt. If so why would it be safer? Also why is it that nude photos of humans can be dangerous when horses or wild animals can be presented even with genitalia included. I believe we humans are very self absorbed when it comes to our bodies. I believe the only negative involved with a beautifully presented female nude is in how it is perceived. Sure there are plenty of social problems with female bodies and nudity, especially if these bodies are considered attractive. Many men and women cannot handle the power of another nude form. We have I believe been conditioned to tarnish what in essence can be such a beautiful aesthetic and energy. I believe if beautiful looking women felt gifted for their looks and were humble that perhaps others would be more empowered by viewing them. Further if others were secure as humans perhaps they could view the aesthetics of a nude woman and maintain a level of peace and control. I do not believe that lustfull men or jealous women will ever be empowered by protecting them from images of beautiful nude women. Sensorship is in my opinion a questionable practice at best. With regards to beautifully produced images of naked women I believe any sensorship is really protecting the weak from their inner issues. I feel in general in society we would be far better off protecting less and discussing and searching far more. In my opinion we should endeavour to allow as much experience as possible to reach us. From here we should search for knowledge and wisdom. Only then will we really gain control and perhaps safety! www.leapoffaith.com.au / www.bodylinecal.com

  • A work in reaction to censorship – in the art world (especially in Australia in recent weeks), movies, music and TV. If you don’t like it don’t look at it – give others a choice… I chose a cherub because it is such a widely known image – from classical painting to water fountains. A naked little boy that no-one seems to have a problem with… Having said that I am absolutely against child pornography, child abuse, violent non-consensual porn, and gratuitous sex and violence. • Free Speech/ Vote Poster (for the 2004 Presidential Election) I designed for my ART 252 class – Graphic Design 1 with Hannah Chen. Collage w/ magazines, photos, duct tape, etc. I wish our professors had given us more assignments like this back when I was still starting at Cal Poly Pomona. Oh, and that’s me in the bondage/ sex slave getup, by the way. Yes, it’s freaky… yes, I’ve got pierced nipples… yes, I look like somebody’s bitch, I know. I normally don’t put myself in compromising positions like that, but I was 19 back then, and gosh darn it, if it’s for a good cause, then GET ME NAKED RIGHT NOW!!!! Hahaha

  • I use Facebook. I just started using the application on it called OWNED. the application is a game where you put your pictures up and people trade them with each other. Seemed like a good way to promote my artwork. Well I put my painting Apolena kneeling . An abstract and extremely subtle nude in a classical pose. / It was removed. I was outraged at the small minded prudish nature of the general public and authority to nudity in art..So created this angry drawing. Update. / Once again these prudish people invade my world again. This time in response to someone asking me to censor someone else’s nude artwork from the Abstract Realism group.

Censorship…...Who needs it?! I was thinking if some things are so dangers that no one can see it and so it should be censored. Then the very people who see it to censor it are putting their minds at great risk. The people who comb the internet in china and the 14 years boys blacking out `the rude bits` in movies and books in Japan and the Russain goverment banning The simpons and south park….. these people are looking at the MOST dangers things in the world . They might get a new idea or some thing worse might happen. Who knows they might even get an open mind. / ...... this cant happen. The people doing all the censoring needs around the clock cheaking up on by doctors and a very high pay rate. Just say no to new ideas…mmmmmmmk ps….Has the world gone crazzy or has it all ways been like this?!

Red Bubble has taken out my “Penis Prayer” photograph. In the past it was published in Australian Women’s Forum Magazine (no plastic cover) because it passed the censorship laws back then, in the “Raging 90s” even though it was stiff because of its aesthetic value and tastefulness. It was also sold in shops as a postcard. What is happening, has censorship occured because people fear intimacy and sex. Has the Government become more conservative, for example Mr Rudd’s comment on Bill Hansen. Is it for commercial reasons of Red Bubble which may restrict our creativity? How far does it have to go before we take a stand. I would love feedback on this one.
