Hey all you artists out there! / i am writing this 5 minutes after i got a phone call from the lady who owns the place where my art is currently on exhibit….. / She is very upset that she is being forced by opinions of some ot the patrons of her restaurant to have me remove one of my paintings and replace it with something less controversial! the painting in questions is this…. / La Raison / I am so upset about it especially in these times we are having! Does no one have anything better to do than pick on us artists… I mean HELLO! The world economy, the election coming up in 2 weeks… For crying out loud!!! / Apparently a woman has been coming in every day and leaving a card on my painting for the domestic abuse hotline….. sooooo passive aggressive! This woman obviously has a very narrow view and is now forcing her opinion on others, making them feel uncomfortable and censoring me!!!! I am trying to empower women not belittle them with my art! Way to take my power away lady! / ok more on this later! xoxo Laurie / Oh i can’t tell you how it makes me feel, well yes i can! Mad

In case you hadn’t heard, Stephen Conroy (ALP’s minister for broadband) is proposing mandatory filtering of the Internet by all Australian ISPs, to ensure that children do not see “online pornography” or other “inappropriate content”. If you don’t want your internet feed filtered, then users will need to opt out of the “service”. Read more about it here / A few questions for us all to consider if this goes ahead unopposed: Who will decide what is “pornography” and “inappropriate content”? How will we know what is on the list? If a site contains one piece of “inappropriate content” will the whole site be filtered? If a site is incorrectly put on the filter list – what is the appeals process? Why has this become an opt-out system when it was clearly stated that it would be an opt-in system before the election? Will this really stop children seeing inappropriate content? or will it make parents lazy? How will this filter (aka censorship) affect the speed of the internet? How will the government guard against mis-use of this filter? How long before this morphs into George Orwell’s “Ministry of Truth”? While no-one is advocating that children be exposed to unsuitable material, this scheme is highly impractical and won’t work anywhere near 100%. / In addition, the costs of such a system will be high and will undoubtedly be passed on to the consumer… Welcome to the Nanny State! I would urge people to protest against this scheme at every opportunity… / If you’re on Facebook, then you can join this group

Hi We had to delete the work Nazi=Cunt as we dont allow the word cunt on the site. Basic guideline is that we try to follow after 8pm broadcast guidelines (with a bit more latitude). I really appreciate your somewhat provocative presence on RB and the edgy tone is fine but we need to be consistent in application of content rules as you would expect. Very best / xxxxx xxxxxxxx / (aka Pilgrim) yo i totaly understand your decision, but if you are basing your borders upon those of television censorship, then you might be interested to know that the first use of the word ‘cunt’ on british network television was, i believe, in about 1995. the press got hold of the fact that the censor had passed it’s use (the last taboo), and it made the first pages of a clutch of conservative newspapers. i remember well the anticiaptation as half the nation ‘stayed up’ to watch, or rather listen to the offending moment. i was about 15 at the time, though i might have smoked my memory a bit, so give it three years either way. the offending mini-serial was a factually based historically inaccurate and sexually charged drama documenting the quiet support of fascism throughout the british aristocrasy in the 1930’s. the main protaginist was sir edward mosely (i think. like i said, my memory is not so god and i don’t believe in wikipedia), self styled fuhrer of the british nazi party. the ‘cunt’ moment came as mosely was being led from court at his trial for treason. a policeman whispered in his ear. just the word. nothing else. so the british censor only passed the word ‘cunt’ when used in reference to a nazi. he deemed it fair, just and in the public interest i may be accused of being a clever dick, or even a smart cunt, but is that not ‘ironic’? it only occured to me as i was lost in the forest last night. i assume it was the subconcious motivation for my slogan. i;d be interested to learn if the series was shown on an australian network, and if it was, if the censor also passed the unpassable, when used in reference to a nazi. wikipedia, perhaps? be my guest. the second time the word cunt appeared on british network t.v. was courtesy of one of our bestloved news presenters, but that’s another story entirely. a case of verbal dyslexia, one might call it. a final note on this rather tired subject. it appears strange to me that one might use write the word ‘swastika’ in big bold letters, but can’t draw it- whilst you can’t write cunt in big letters, but are free to draw them. i know you are not to blame- that you are merely folowing somebody elses rules, but isn’t it time to stop. they are, after all, ridiculous. if you ever open a censorship department i’d be happy to consider consulatancy work. yours sincerely xxxxxx xxxxx / (aka mister khan)

Censorship…...Who needs it?! I was thinking if some things are so dangers that no one can see it and so it should be censored. Then the very people who see it to censor it are putting their minds at great risk. The people who comb the internet in china and the 14 years boys blacking out `the rude bits` in movies and books in Japan and the Russain goverment banning The simpons and south park….. these people are looking at the MOST dangers things in the world . They might get a new idea or some thing worse might happen. Who knows they might even get an open mind. / ...... this cant happen. The people doing all the censoring needs around the clock cheaking up on by doctors and a very high pay rate. Just say no to new ideas…mmmmmmmk ps….Has the world gone crazzy or has it all ways been like this?!

To whom this may concern: I HAD BEEN CENSORED BY THE “BEGINNER’S EXPRESSIONS” GROUP! I am angry as I am writing these words. A couple of days past I joined the “Beginner’s Expressions” group. At first, my three pieces of politikal shit weren’t accepted. So both artists by the names of “Moonlight1” and the (I suppose) preceding owner/moderator (whose name isn’t important nor relevant) wrote to me and apologized for presumably their “mistakes” with “accidentally” NOT accepting my politikal shit. So I re-submitted newer images. Again, my shit were REJECTED for the second time. I proceeded to emailing “Moonlight1” and asked for an explanation. THEN I GOT A RESPONSE BACK FROM SOME INDIVIDUAL WHOSE NAME IS “Pilgrim”-s/he wrote the following censorial bullshit of an email… / --—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- / Phillipe Moonlight has asked that you not submit your political work to the groups she moderates “Beginner’s Expressions”, “Human and Nature” and “Passions”. We give the volunteers who moderate the groups a great deal of freedom about what work they feature as they are not compensated in anyway for their moderation. Please respect her views. We are also pretty tolerant of different political art at RedBubble and I think you are finding other groups that are very open to your work (if not let me know). Thank you for being a part of RedBubble Very best Martin / (cofounder) / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-- I cannot believe these “artists” whose actions CONTRADICT their philosophy of their version of “TOLERANCE” of different “politikal views.” But the way I see this censorial bushit is this: I AIN’T JOINING A GROUP WHERE I AIN’T WELCOMED. Simple as that. IF THIS ISN’T CENSORSHIP, THEN PERHAPS I AM “SEMANTICALLY CHALLENGED” AS TO THE REAL MEANING OF “CENSORSHIP” AS I UNDERSTOOD IT TO BE. Whatever is clever with me. I ain’t wasting my time with aesthetik fascists like these fukkin’ haterz. Pissed-off, Phillipe

Well, I just checked my emails, and had a polite note from the Rb “watchers’, explaining how someone reported one of my Journal (jokes)... apparently I breached some sort of good taste/poor taste boundary, and the Entry was removed? / Reminds me of the “touchy-touchy” nature of some people … oh well, it was only a “joke”, perhaps if I had have changed the singular “one-word” used to some other, it would have slipped under the radar …. / What have I learnt? to censor all words to homogenised, non-specific, meaningless terms, hmm, any ideas on how that can be done?

  • Arguing for the "safe for workplace viewing" filter
    by David Barnes

I’ve been thinking this issue over since a couple of redbubblers emailed me to ask what I thought, and whether I had the “safe for workplace viewing” filter on any of my images. I think I’ve reached the conclusion (in my own head) that self-classification is a perfectly reasonable thing. The “safe for workplace viewing” filter is not enforced censorship, it simply gives me the opportunity to give viewers of my work a choice of what they get to see. Ie. it gives both artist and audience a choice. It’s classification, not censorship. So I have decided to exercise this choice for most of my nudes. It’s not going to stop people seeing my art work, but it makes it their choice. There’s nothing to be gained from me not using the filter. So it’s a pragmatic decision; one that seems perfectly sensible. The censorship debate is a minefield. Earlier today I tried to frame a response to this issue by arguing for freedom of expression and choice. However, I think some of my clothed images are sexier and more provocative than some of my nudes, so it’s such a wiggly, grey, fuzzy line that I just couldn’t sustain any reasonable argument without contradicting myself. So there we are. My 2 cents worth. Hope it’s interesting to someone! – David. ps. the above is based on my recent response to Tony Ryan’s recent journal
