  • DEATH, THE FRIEND If I could be forever young, / And all the year were May; / If all the songs were yet unsung, / And night escaped the day; If one I’ve loved were near me yet, / If I might reach his hand, / Or if—or if I might forget / Or ever understand; If there were no adventuring / Beyond the stars unfurled, / Then I might be content to cling / For ever to the world. / ~Frank Fisher Slocomb This was taken at the Lorenzo cemetery in St. Augustine Florida.

  • Bosham (pronounced /bɒzəm/) is a small coastal village and civil parish in the Chichester District of West Sussex, England, situated three miles (5km) west of Chichester on an inlet of Chichester Harbour. / The Church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is thought to have been built on the site of a Roman Basilica – the bases of the Chancel arch pillars are all that are left of that earlier building. (A villa with a central court built in the reign of Antoninus has been excavated in the grounds of Broadbridge Farm in Delling Lane, along with a marble head, a Roman bath and a small amphitheatre.) / The present building is largely Saxon, the first parts of it being built in the early 11th Century, during the reign of Canute – (He lived at Bosham for a while, and it is strongly believed that his eight year old daughter died here, and is buried in the Church. A skeleton of such a child has been discovered here, and the place is marked with a stone slab, bearing the Danish emblem of a raven.) Featured in the A Place to Call Home group JUNE 2009.

  • This is one of over 200 exposures made on December 23 2007 at Kensal Green Cemetery in North West London. There was a very thick fog that had closed the airports and brought much of the UK to a standstill. It seemed obvious then that I should go and shoot some images in the cemetery which is about 300 yards from my front door. Interestingly, Kensal Green Cemetery is said to be one of the earliest “modern” Cemeteries, dating from the mid 1800s. Cemeteries all around the world based their design on that of Kensal Green. Part of the intention was to integrate the cemetery with its natural park-like surroundings, a place where death nurtures nature. Having been shot with a rather ancient Canon 10D at ISO 400, this image is slightly ‘noisy’, but think it adds to the ambience. Canon 10D / Canon 28-200mm @28mm / 1/90sec @f11 / ISO400 Tweaked in Lightroom – desaturated a bit, colour temp lowered slightly, contrast enhanced a tad.

  • The battle of Iwo Jima was immortalized by Joe Rosenthal’s photograph of the raising of the American flag atop the 546 foot Mount Suribachi by five Marines and one Navy Corpsman. The famous Iwo Jima Memorial outside Arlington National Cemetery was created based on Mr. Rosenthal’s work, and this is a photograph of that memorial. The battle over the island of Iwo Jima in World War II was one of the fiercest battles between the United States and Japan, and resulted in the United States capturing the island. Japanese positions on the island were heavily fortified, with vast bunkers, hidden artillery, and 11 miles of underground tunnels. The battle was the first American attack on a major Japanese island and the Imperial soldiers defended their positions tenaciously. Of the 22,000 Japanese soldiers present at the beginning of the battle, over 20,000 were killed and only 1,083 taken prisoner. Source: Wikipedia Thank you to the group “Canon DSLR” for featuring this photograph. The Iwo Jima Memorial is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This photograph is “as is” from the camera, there was no post processing. Camera: Canon Rebel XTi 400D
