Whether you appreciate the circle of life or you just like skulls…
Box Hill Cemetary – 02 Dec 2007. A very hot day to be out with the camera (33degrees) and didnt see a soul – apart from stone ones like this.
This is just so sad to me, that families can not even get a sense of closure and have a place to mourn the loss of their family member. Any US Veterans Cemetary is just littered with these gravemarkers for Unkown Soldiers. How can you give it all for your country, and then not even be recognized by name? HDR image captured at the Hampton National Cemetary, Hampton, VA.

BEST VIEWED LARGER Rookwood Necropolis, at 283 hectares (700 acres), is one of the largest burial grounds in the world and one of Australia’s oldest cemeteries. It has been in continual use since it was established in 1868 and over 800,000 people have been interred within the grounds. The headstones and monuments reflect the history of the colony Of New South Wales and the development of the city of Sydney. The heritage values of the cemetery are protected by an act of Parliament. / / The original 81 hectare (200 acre) heritage area, located in the north western corner of the Necropolis, is subject to a Permanent Conservation Order and represents the largest and one of the finest surviving examples of a Victorian public cemetery anywhere in the world. Rookwood was originally designed in the grand gardenesque style, fashionable in the mid to late 19th Century. The brick gutters which defined the ornate landscaping can still be seen, together with the highly decorative monuments and other features including the chapel of St Michael the Archangel and the Serpentine Canal with its elegant ponds, bridges and urns. These were set in formal gardens with rest houses to cater for mourners and visitors This shot was the result of a Sydney group meetup on Saturday 14th June, the site definitely has a feel to it. Ive never seen so many black crows . The site definitely has an atmosphere with graves dating back to the early days of the colony.. In its day there was a rail service with a special funeral train that left from a purpose built station at Sydney’s Central Railway station. Unfortunately the special platforms at Rookwood being demolished, but the “Mortuary STation” still exists at Central Station. you can get an idea what these stations looked like at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regents_Street_railway_station,_Sydney
I shot this at a cemetery in Fall River, Massachusetts while wondering around with Chazz A portion of the proceeds of this print will be donated to the American Red Cross.

Divine Prayer was featured in the Amazing Graves group on January 29, 2009. An infrared image taken at historic Myrtle Hill Cemetery, which overlooks downtown Rome, Georgia. The early citizens of Rome chose hills for cemeteries because of the flooding of Rome’s three rivers. Opened in 1857, this hillside cemetery covers 25 acres built on 5 terraces and is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Please don’t copy or download this image. On March 13th, 2009 I visited Old Gray Cemetery with one of my new Red bubble friends, Michael Byerley. Here is a photo of Lillien.
This was taken a while ago at a graveyard on a foggy evening. I did enhance the colors and darken the image to bring out the silhouettes more, but the rest of it is as is. I realize it’s a bit blurry, but I guess you’ll have to deal. © Jessica Walker
In the sallow twilight of dusk I sit, / silent and soundless. I’m listening to the rustling leaves, / getting lost in the song of the wind whistling through the trees. I try to be very quiet, my breathing decelerates, / my heart beat winds down. Silent now – almost without a sound – I am sitting here, / swaying to and fro like a straw in the wind. I am listening deep inside of me, / calm I am! / My blood rushes through my body, / like a mountain stream after a thunderstorm. Still getting calmer, listening, / I hear the rain drops clutching to earth almost withouth a sound. I hear the crescendo of the impact when a drop hits the earth. / Hear the gargling sound when it sinks into the ground. Thievishly I follow its way through the arteries of Mother Earth, / I float and swim through the odorous soil. Deeper and deeper I am dragged. / Suddenly there is silence around … I hover in total silence! / Can hardly breath, I am deaf … But then I notice – it isn’t silent here, / I have just become part of the pulse. Steadily the pulse is beating … / silence! * / Written on 15th January 2004 – so it is a bit older. Picture taken on Melaten cemetary, Cologne! / It is so peaceful there …
