La Rue Obscure is the oldest street in the old town of Villefranche sur Mer on the French Riviera, between Nice and Monaco. It was built on virgin soil at the beginning of the 13th century. La Rue Obscure formed the basis of the rest of the town’s construction on the slopes rising from this coastal lane. It gave inhabitants of the town certain refuge against possible attacks. The ship captains who were forced by storms to anchor in the bay, could make necessary repairs in safety. La Rue Obscure also welcomed precious merchandise, such as wine, in its cellars.

Sevenhill Cellars – Clare Valley South Australia. The Jesuits, (Society of Jesus) migrated to Australia from Austria in 1848 seeking a life free from religious and political persecution. They settled at Sevenhill in the beautiful Clare Valley and established Sevenhill Cellars, which is the oldest existing winery in the Clare Valley in 1851. Initially the main purpose of the cellars was to provide sacramental wine for religious use and this has been ongoing. Sevenhill Cellars now produce white, red and fortified wines as well as sacramental wine. ... from the Sevenhill Cellars web page – history Canon 50D ; Sigma 18-200mm OS 3 frame HDR/tone mapped – so to gain the range of subtle colours in a low light situation

Personally I think there is nothing common about it! It’s botanical name is: Calochilus robertsonii. This little beauty was photographed today at Sinclare’s Gully Winery & Cellar Door at Norton Summit in the Adelaide Hills. It is the only eco- certified cellar door in the hills & the wine is very nice. They are also restoring the bush, and it is home to some wonderful native orchids and plants, as well as some stunning bird life such as the Sacred Kingfisher & the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo. It was a wonderful afternoon. We had a tour through the bush & then lunch & wine under the magestic candle bark trees….which included a pair of Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos in plain view up amongst the branches. I can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon, good company, food & wine, whilst relaxing amoungst our stunning native vegetation & wildlife…pure bliss! Sinclare’s Gully Winery & Cellar Door

(This is a far cry from the pioneering days of the first Jesuit winemaker Br Schreiner. He and Br Schneider built a wine press in 1863 capable of pressing a formidable load of 4 buckets of grapes at a time!) The wine is completely processed on the property including the bottling of the finished wine (35,000 cases per year). ... from the Sevenhill Cellars web page My favourite wine on the day – was the 2004 Grenache. A slightly lighter red than I would normally choose, however summer-time in Australia, this, slightly chilled, goes wonderfully well with a lunch of quality local cheeses, cold meats and few perhaps “European” finger foods such as dolmades, giant beans, etc. – all consumed under the shade of an old pepper tree. Ahh…isn’t life wonderful. 3 image HDR/tone mapped f1.8 ; 1/8 sec +/-2ev ; ISO100 Canon 50D / 50mm f1.8 Canon lens
