  • A big festivity being celebrate in Xiahe, China.

  • Girls spinning on a whirling carnival ride during a mid summer’s night; from a series: Sunset on the Small Town Carnival. Owing to the rise of mega-parks and high liability insurance, small town carnivals are rapidly disappearing. Whenever possible I try to document these vanishing icons of the Twentieth Century American landscape. The original image was shot at 1/15th with a camera flash and 2 remote strobes. The long exposure shows motion and the flash freezes detail. I used opposing color filters on the remotes to get better depth in the subject. In post processing I used a combination of effects from both Illustrator and PhotoShop. The big trick was getting the file size down by rasterizing my AIs in PS and reopening them in AI and re-saving as a vector.

  • Shot of a woman dressed as la Catrina at a Dia de los Muertos procession. Dia de los muertos (Day of the Dead) in Mexico represents a mixture of Christian devotion and Pre-Hispanic traditions and beliefs. As a result of this mixture, the celebration comes to life as an unique Mexican tradition and celebration including an altar and offerings dedicated to those deceased. The altar includes four main elements of nature – earth, wind, water, and fire. The celebration occurs on the 1st and 2nd of November, in connection with the Catholic holy days of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. Thanks for looking : ) Shot w/ a Canon 20D.

  • I have just celebrated Beltane, the Celtic festival marking the beginning of Summer on May eve/ Mayday. The town near where I live has a huge Folk festival every Mayday Weekend and I have been down enjoying the dancers and the music and taking photographs of the participents. / I was inspired to do this artwork by the fabulous ‘Beltane Borders morris’ side who are based in Devon, England. Their dances and look are very Pagan and I was delighted to see them perform one of their energetic dances to Loreena McKennitt’s Huron : Beltane Fire Dance , a song which was itself inspired by English mayday parades and celebrations: Beltane Border Morris website: http://www.beltaneborder.co.uk/ “When in the springtime of the year / When the trees are crowned with leaves / When the ash and oak, and the birch and yew / Are dressed in ribbons fair When owls call the breathless moon / In the blue veil of the night / The shadows of the trees appear / Amidst the lantern light We’ve been rambling all the night / And some time of this day / Now returning back again / we bring a garland gay Who will go down to those shady groves / And summon the shadows there / And tie a ribbon on those sheltering arms / In the springtime of the year The songs of birds seem to fill the wood / That when the fiddler plays / All their voices can be heard / Long past their woodland days And so they linked their hands and danced / Round in circles and in rows / And so the journey of the night descends / When all the shades are gone “A garland gay we bring you here / And at your door we stand / It is a sprout well budded out / The work of Our Lord’s hand” The Mummer’s Dance by Loreena McKennitt

  • Yesterday night we celebrated the most important Indian festival-Diwali or festival of lights. Diwali--the Hindu festival of lights, is the most popular of all the festivals in India, Diwali or Dīpāvali is a significant festival in Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism. Adherents of these religions celebrate Diwali as the Festival of Lights. They light diyas—cotton string wicks inserted in small clay pots filled with oil—to signify victory of good over the evil within an individual. The festival of Diwali extends over five days. Because of the lights, fireworks, and sweets involved, it’s a great favorite with children. A row of lights: / The name of the festival comes from the Sanskrit word dipavali, meaning row of lights. Diwali is known as the ‘festival of lights’ because houses, shops, and public places are decorated with small earthenware oil lamps called diyas. These lamps, which are traditionally fueled by mustard oil, are placed in rows in windows, doors and outside buildings to decorate them. The lamps are lit to help the goddess Lakshmi(Goddess of wealth) find her way into people’s homes. On the day of Diwali / Deepavali, many wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks. Legend: / In Hinduism, across many parts of India it is the homecoming of Rama after a 14-year exile in the forest and his victory over Ravana. In the legend, the people of Ayodhya (the capital of his kingdom) welcomed Rama by lighting rows (avali) of lamps (dĭpa), thus its name: dīpāwali. Fireworks: / Fireworks are also a big part of the Diwali celebrations, although in recent years there has been a move against them because of noise and atmospheric pollution. Lakshmi puja: / For hinuds the festival honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Special prayers are held in evening(it’s the most important ritual of Diwali)—people worship Goddess Lakshmi. People start the new business year at Diwali, and some Hindus will say prayers to the goddess for a successful year. Some business communities start their financial year on Diwali and new account books are opened on this day. Hindus will leave the windows and doors of their houses open so that Lakshmi can come in. Rangoli are drawn on the floors – rangoli are patterns and the most popular subject is the lotus flower. This because images of Lakshmi traditionally show her either holding a lotus or sitting on one. There is much feasting and celebration, and the Diwali lamps are regarded as making it easy for Lakshmi to find her way to houses. Gifts: / Like Christmas in the West, Diwali is very much a time for buying and exchanging gifts. Traditionally sweets and dried fruit were very common gifts to exchange, but the festival has become a time for serious shopping-clothes, electronics, cars, two wheelers, gold, silver, kitchen utensils, etc etc. Shops are flooded with people on the eve of festival. It is also best time of year to redecorate home.
