/ This is a friend of mine whom I admire for a number of reasons. / One is her drive and determination, last year, to celebrate the fact that her late parents brought her and her brothers to Australia, in December, 1956. / ( I had arrived, in May that year, on the same ship.) / / In December 2006, she came with her family, to her eldest brother’s place and changed into a costume, to honour her heritage. / / She had researched the story of their migration; collected memorabilia and produced a booklet to hand to all the members of the three generations present at this party, in a sunny backyard, in southern Sydney. / / A family friend had been invited to sing the Australian ballads, and everyone knew: Click go the shears, Wild Colonial Boy, Botany Bay, etc., etc.. / / The older brother, host and now ‘head of the family’, explained that there had been hardships. That the parents had worked hard and that there had been ups and downs, through the years, but there were now many reasons to celebrate. / / I’d been contacted by the lady, during the preparations. She had hoped that I’d know when the migrant hostel, in Matraville, ( where we all got to know each other, in 1956/57 ) was built and when it was vacated and removed. I put her in contact with Randwick Library and they found the answers. / I was invited to the celebrations, not only because I actually represented the past, that nobody else there apart from the lady and her brothers had known, but also because I could accompany her and the grandchildren. / / While I played, the grandchildren were taught some Dutch children’s songs and any Dutch visitors to this journal entry will realise that one of the songs was: 1, 2, 3, 4, hoedje van papier and the children made the paper hats after learning the song and singing it, while they folded. / / The middle brother had researched and prepared copies of the family-tree, going back, not only to the northern province(s) of the Netherlands but also Germany. I had the strong impression that the family, which had thrown itself into the Australian community, and not normally been very involved with things “Dutch”, on this great, sunny, summer’s day, in this Aussie back-yard, with its shed and its clothes-hoist and neatly mown lawn, had gone the extra mile to make this a very Dutch occasion. Not only the orange hats and typical Dutch caps, but all the Dutch delicatessen, including the obligatory salt-licorice and the croquettes. / The middle son and I arrived at the same high school, in 1957, in first year. It was South Sydney Boys Junior High, in Randwick. / It ceased to exist and the building went back into use by Randwick Girls High School, in 1959 and half of the students were enrolled in the new Maroubra Bay High School. THAT ceased to exist a number of years ago and before being demolished was used for the T.V. series: “Heartbreak High”. / Our parents knew each other, having met, in Matraville Migrant Hostel. My father used to give theirs, a lift to work. My mother “clicked” with their mother. I believe it was the “right-brain-oriented” (‘arty?”) interesting ways of doing things that attracted my mother. The middle brother and I, along with another Dutch friend, who arrived at South Sydney Boys Junior High, a little later, in 1957, still speak Dutch to each other, on the rare occasions that we meet. / / It is hard to put into words, how lovely this celebration was. The backyard couldn’t have been more Aussie! The warm, summer weather more perfect. The family more relaxed and the symbolism more obvious. Their parents would have been so proud. There had, no doubt, not always been happy times but THIS was what packing up and taking your family to the other side of the world, had been all about. Hard to put into words. But, as you can see – *I’ve tried!! / Last year I was able to send some items to the Pack Up and Go exhibition which was located in the Lower House of Parliament building, in The Hague.

This is a recipe that my grandmother, a junior high school home economics teacher, got out of the Betty Crocker cookbook during the 1950s. I’ve modified it so much over the years that it doesn’t much resemble the original at this point. It’s another family holiday standard. It can be served as a side during the meal or used as a dessert. I’ve even added melted white chocolate to the cooked cranberry mixture before chilling and served it in chocolate shells as a dessert. Cranberry Sorbet 1 lb. bag of cranberries / 2 cups sugar / 4 cups water / 1/3 Lemon juice / Grated rind of one orange / 1/8 cup of vodka or orange liqueur(optional but makes for a creamier sorbet) Cook the cranberries in 2 cups of water until the berries are soft and start to pop. Run the cooked berries through a food mill. Add the remaining water, the sugar, the lemon juice, and the orange rind. Chill until the mixture is cold. Overnight is best. Add the vodka or liqueur just before freezing. Freeze in an ice cream freezer. Let stand a few minutes before serving.

As no one buys my cards I have resorted to buying them myself and mailing them to people I know. When they make the mistake of thanking me I then beseech them to take a photo of themselves with the card. Dastardly! A good friend, Kathy Clugston, whom I like to refer to as “BBC Newsreader Kathy Clugston” (and what Kathy can do for the shipping forecast is nothing short of miraculous…...) has been the first to respond to this blatant emotional blackmail. I haven’t quite worked out what to do with these photos yet but I’m working on it. Meanwhile, if anyone out there ever needs voice talent I can’t recommend Kathy highly enough! She is also a great actress, curently finishing up in a summer prom in London.

Burns Night The 25th of January 2009 is the 250th anniversary of the birth of Scottish poet and writter Robert ‘Rabbie’ Burns. Burns was born in Ayrshire, the eldest of seven children of a struggling tenant farmer and his wife. Poverty limited his formal education, but Burns read widely in English literature and the Bible and learned to read French. He was encouraged in his self-education by his father, and his mother acquainted him with Scottish folk songs, legends, and proverbs. Arduous farm work and undernourishment in his youth permanently injured his health, leading to the rheumatic heart disease from which he eventually died. His legacy includes numerous poems and over 200 folks songs and ballads, including the famous “Auld Lang Syne”, still sung by millions every New Years Eve. Burns Night is always celebrated on January 25th, the poet’s birthday. A traditional Burns Night supper might start off with Cock-a-Leekie’ soup, followed by haggis, ‘tatties’ & ‘neeps’, no doubt washed down with a wee dram or two, and to finish Clootie Dumpling (a pudding prepared in a linen cloth or cloot) or Typsy Laird (a Scottish sherry trifle). The evening includes traditional music (preferably from a piper or two) and readings of the poet’s work. Click here to see a selection of Scottish scenes, including a statue of the bard himself, which stands in the town of Dumfries, where he died.

If you hadn’t heard yet, David Cameron’s (for those out of the UK and not aware of who he is, the conservative opposition leader in parliament) six year old son has died today. / As mark of respect, Prime Minister has suggested suspending the Prime Minister’s Questions. / Ivan Cameron had cerebral palsy and epilepsy, and died today just 45 minutes after being admitted to the hospital – it must have come as a shock. It’s something no parent should have to go through, losing a child. Something nobody should have to go through – seeing a loved one decline and die. / I never have been a Cameron supporter but here, quite rightly, politics shouldn’t matter – furthermore I personally have increasing respect for him as much as anything. RIP Ivan Cameron, 25th February, 2009

Oh my dear friends, I’m full of joy and tears today as I check in quickly and find on my writing alone I just hit over 10,000 views in so short a time too!!! What can I say but thank you all and thank you redbubble. When I first started writing just over 12 months ago, I had not written since school, even so I found it helped me in staying optimistic when so many things seemed to be so bleak… through your encouragement and supportive reads, you shuld be proud to know you’ve kept me near sane and helped me through some dark, long and cold hours when I’ve thought pain would never subside, by giving me something to read and view when I cannot write myself. Even when I’ve had technical struggles you’ve continually supported me and for all that I cannot show how much it means to me. If this is reaching out through one site, it makes me wonder just how many eyes are watching us at any time throught different circles we move in. Well, I just wanted to raise a little optimism between you all, and give you something back you should be proud of yourselves, for you do not know how such small touches are changing lives dramatically for the better. Keep up the great work you wonderful friendly bunch, and here’s counting to the next milestone…..Thankyou all, kindest thoughts and wishes to you all, have a great Easter holiday, Anna-Marie. Hugs.xx
