Pulling up my driveway I noticed a little note on my front door from the Post Office. I quickly grabbed the note, reversed out and drove down the road to collect whatever was waiting for me at the other end. I had no idea what it could be! Then, to my surprise it was the long awaited publication Compassion, Courage & Friendship! Excitedly, I carefully opened the folded cardboard and pulled out the shrink wrapped book. After removing the plastic, I pulled the book out from the dust-cover and stared at the front cover. It was stunning. What hit me first was the fantastic composition of the images, merged onto the matte print front cover, with the beautiful sweeping yellow hues. As I opened the book I smelt that sweet aroma of the fresh print. I quickly flicked through the 77 lush pages. In that quick skim, I noticed contrasting black and whites, deep poems and stories and beautiful artworks adorned by colour. I knew I was in for some great book reading. Before settling in with a nice cup of mocha, I recharged my camera and decided to share my finds ‘as I go’ with the Redbubble community. I ventured into the backyard, to soak up the last few moments of the sun hitting the foliage. As I studied the pages more closely, I noticed the 2 types of unique typography that bestowed the titles. I was really impressed by how much care had gone into the layout and crop areas. As a self-taught website/poster designer, I know how difficult this can be with multiple size and colour images. After taking multiple photos, I decided it was time to put the camera to rest and give this publication the attention it deserves, with what little sunlight I had left. Overall, this fantastic ‘coffee-table’ publication is a definite keeper. It is beautifully crafted, displays a large variety of imagery, stories and poems from many artists and will lead people back to the amazing website that compiled this compassionate, courageous and friendly piece of ‘art’. You can pick up your copy when it goes on sale this coming THURSDAY. Don’t miss out!

  • My review of Compassion, Courage and Friendship, the latest Redbubble Publication

I’ve had a copy of Compassion, Courage and Friendship (seen here for size comparison), sitting on my desk for a couple of days now. I’ve been trying to work out how best to review it. To be honest, when somebody sends you something free it’s really hard to get past the joy of that and see to the heart of the matter.. but as this is a review that might help people decide whether to buy this book or not, I need to be as unbiased and honest as I can. And so I put on my critical pants. For starters, the packaging is really nice. It’s got its own little box that the book sits in so if you’re like me you spend an extra few seconds trying to work out how it opens before you realise. The book itself is on great stock, the cover in that semi-gloss you want to rub your face against and the pages slightly thicker than, say, Black and White magazine. It also smells like rainbows and tastes like goodness. Sorry, just trying to get the sycophancy out of my system. Unicorns! Opening it up, I was really pleased to see there was actually non-photographic work in there. I was expecting something like a photo book, with a single token painting, a couple of stories and maybe one photoshop job, but I have to take my invisible hat off to Natalie Perkins, Glen Smith, Anne van Alkemade, Julie Langford and Christopher Barker for the variety and quality of the work in here. For all that I’m obsessed with fonts and gsm, the work is clearly the star of the book, and each piece singularly is wonderful. Of course you can’t put two images (or an image and a story) next to each other and expect one won’t alter the other, they’re like colours, changing their nature depending on how you shuffle them. In this case the work really compliments it’s neighbour, and you can tell Jo O’Brien and Hop Dac spent many a night poring over the content, placing and replacing them like an elaborate painting with infinite solutions. Also, I like to imagine them wearing blonde wigs and sword fighting with umbrellas. While we’re visualising. I feel like I’d be letting people down by not having a negative, so I’m going to mention fonts. Mainly the fonts are fine, I really like the style, but I think if you’re going to have a font that mimics handwriting, you might as well grab a pen and just write it yourself. You need that variation in characters, rather than every “a” looking exactly the same.. and if you don’t have the time or pens to write them all out, at least don’t choose an “i” with something as distinctive as a heart over it. The first time I noticed it I thought “Oh look, a tiny heart”, but by the end of the book every little heart caused by own to skip. I’m really not a fan of that. I guess in the end what I need to ask myself is “Would I buy the book?”. Yes, I would buy it, I would certainly give it as a gift to loved ones, or post it to a stranger or lay it on the ground and dance around it. In a word, it’s professional. From a website where anybody can play if they bring their own ball that is a wonderful thing. It makes me both want to buy and be part of future books. Just vary the characters a little next time.

RedBubble claims to be an open and inclusive website where you can share your creative genius with the world, but with the new RedBubble book publication ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, it might leave people wondering where this creative genius got to in this instance. Mind you, the only people left wondering will be the people that haven’t got their grubby little hands on ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, everyone else will be enthralled as they flip the pages and allow themselves to be reduced to tears, anger, laughter, smiles, and deep thought time and time again. At first sight, ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’ seems like the perfect collectors item. A perfect square measuring 21.5 cm in all directions, and the spine labelled with the source and title, it would seem that the exterior design was thought through for the avid book collector. It’s not only bright and airy, but the aesthetics of the cover make you feel at ease and loved. Now sitting on the train and heading to college, I manage to be publicly seduced and buckle to the passionate gestures of ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’. The exquisite craftsmanship continues, with each captivating image and inspiring literature, matching perfectly to tell a story that might otherwise be lost. Someone made an effort and it certainly shows. The typeface has also been perfectly selected to match the theme and only add to the experience, it isn’t distracting and I don’t have to squint or learn another language to read it. Sure there are plenty of thought provoking images to immerse yourself in, but I say it once again, the literature that accompanies is a match made in heaven. Don’t take my word for it though, because as I sit here on a peak hour train critiquing ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, it seems I have some new-found friends reading along with me. The IT guy to my left, the somewhat hungover looking blondie to my right, and the people I can’t see but can feel breathing on my neck behind me (I know you’re there). I do have one hang up though, and it could be one of personal preference, but I was disappointed that the links to each artist where at the back of ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, as opposed to being directly beneath the featured art or literature piece. It might sound picky, but as a matter of convenience, it would allow the reader to more freely access their favorite artist or writer and go view their other works online. The works from the RedBubble community collected in this book illuminate the power of Compassion, Courage, and Friendship. They show us that when we go beyond our fears and truly see someone different to us, we look at something that can set us free. In concluding this review, I asked Sandra Iov, a fellow photography student to critique two images in ‘Compassion, Courage, and Friendship’, and here are her two favorites and an explanation of why: I Dreamt Of An Angel II by chrisdade “I like the contrast between the straight lines and the sharpness of the surroundings in comparison to the softness of the skin and shadows of the boys. I like the idea that although they may be perceived as homosexuals, it plays against the idea of their sin with the angel wings. It says what they do is not a sin.” – Sandra Brothers by Jinx “The older boy is keeping the younger brother safe from the darkness in the background. The bridge leads to the unknown and they look like they’re about to take that journey together. The contrast between the light on the boys and that of the forest is powerful.” – Sandra

/ / / / / Having seen the entries accumulate in this challenge, I did not envy the judges who compiled Redbubble’s latest book Compassion Courage & Friendship, but they have risen to the task! / The book is a beautifully compiled mixture of photographs, drawings and writing – which all combined to make you laugh and cry, remember and think. / / It covers so many facets of the human condition – joy, love, helplessness, despair and hope and is so perfectly balanced that no one emotion overwhelms you. / Pieces of writing that paint pictures in your mind tell stories of offering hope in despair, resilience in the face of neglect and compassion which rises above apathy and egocentricity. / Pictures telling more than the thousand words they’re always credited with – a touch of a mother’s skin communicating more than our language will allow, eyes that cannot speak of horrors they’ve seen and images of friendships that will endure forever. / / I know I will be giving a copy of this book to my best friend for Christmas – but if you want to do that you’ll need to buy two copies, (the word on the street is that it will go on sale this week) because I guarantee this is one you will want to keep for yourself.

Over the last two weeks I’ve been browsing an early version of the internet – the book. The publication in question is Courage Compassion and Friendship which is one of the growing collection of Redbubble books. I’ve decided to write a few words after a while with it – pictures you will see in other reviews I won’t go on much about the physicality of the book suffice to say it comes in a beautiful dustcover/pocket with a wonderful inspiring design that’s also reflected on the cover of the book itself. The book is a square format and is well made to last for the ages. One of the great joys of Compassion Courage and Friendship is the way you can just dive into any page and see consistently great work in both visual and written form. The balance of writing and images is just so – allowing you to seamlessly experience both in the turn of a few pages. Now I’m going to highlight a few works not because they are my favourites. I decided to open a few pages at random and highlight the work that I found as a fair way for you to get an idea of what you can expect. Worth is a short written piece that beautifully conveys the heartbreaking reality of some situations in this world – where you find that all the compassion you can give can’t stop the progress of heartbreak. / I dreamt of an Angel II is an amazing image that conveys the hope of those praying for heavenly compassion and the hope of those whose aim is to give it. The scene is lit by the white light of a window giving a great sense of a calm and enlightening future path. / Gone fishing is an image that would define a faithful friendship – two people sharing the one physical space for a day. I suspect sometimes they’d talk to each other but most of the time they just draw comfort from each others presence. / Vera was a written piece that my mother first commented on when she read the book. She knew the scene ,story and character described was based in reality since the nuances writing struck a chord with her life experiences – making the story all the more powerful. / One is a simple, yet perfectly composed, image which deceives. After looking at it a while questions drift into your mind: Will they live together forever? Can they feel each other even when apart? Will the caring get stronger still? You could search for all this work on the Bubble and eventually find it but with Courage Compassion and Friendship you’ll find it and all the emotion that it contains in one heart wrenching place. I recommend buying a copy to nourish your soul.

  • if anyone knows how to get an animated gif to play, PLEASE let me know!!! I will be most grateful :D Compassion, Courage and Friendship the Book The newest publication by the Elves and Community of RedBubble arrived via the friendly postie yesterday afternoon. I’d forgotten all about it and wondered what it was that had arrived. I turned the package over and over while I walked to my desk from the front door. I opened it, then dropped the packaging on the floor for Socks to play with. She just loves cardboard!! More first thoughts were…. ooooooh!!! It’s the new book!!! Mmmmmmm, smells great! Feels beautifully silky smooth… love that matt varnish. It feels like a cross between silk and velvet!! It smells so nice. I keep smelling it. Such a lovely smell of varnish, paper and ink… I flicked through the pages, feeling the smoothness of the paper they’re created with. Yes… I confess… I’m a paper addict. I just love stationery and colours and of course, paper of all types (no wonder our cat loves it so much). I can’t walk through a newsagent or kmart without checking out the textas, pencils, paints, paper and books. I spend hours in art and craft shops!! The magazines I can pass… most all look the same these days and are filled with adverts trying to make you buy everything that you don’t need. This new book is a softcover with a outer casing (which was slightly dented in the spine…. probably the work of being at the bottom of the box from the printer’s). / I took out my camera and turned it to ‘movie’. Hoping to put my Stephanie Spielberg qualities to work. But unfortunately for me, Stephanie’s popped out for a bit and I have to use still photos. / So I took a few photos… until my camera pouted and said it was full. So off to the computer it went to be emptied and I got back to what I was doing before my new pressie arrived. / A few hours went by while I got lots of my work done. I’d already spent half an hour ‘reading’ the new book. That night, I opened the book again. But by then I’m feeling too tired and achy to bother doing anything. So I put the book down, stuck the telly on and watched ‘The Wedding Singer’ then ‘28 Days’ ... both faves of mine that I’ve watched so many times already!! I’m sure you all know how it is!! If I must make excuses, there was nothing on but war and fighting and I didn’t feel like being on the computer. Yes, feeling pretty crappy. Maybe it was all that sniffing I did earlier? Saturday… the next day. Lots of work to finish… so finished all the alts to the William Morris in Applique book’s pattern sheets and coloured diagrams. Goes to print next week!! Yay!! It’ll be on the shelves for you all to buy in late January 2009. I then did the vacuuming and a load of washing. Stuff I’m sure you all wanted to know. I finally got back to the Compassion Courage and Friendship bubblebook. I’d been picking it up and flicking through it every time I went past it (it was just sitting there on my desk, looking at me). / Something I do recommend is that you have a big box of tissues and cheerful music playing. / I really have to thank those who had a hand in creating this beautiful book. Thank you for adjusting the salt levels in my body. I couldn’t stop. Even now, thinking back to the stories and images… some so sad they break your heart. / The most heart warming would have to be the Taking care of the future but the most tender and heartbreaking was Melinda Kerr story of the Rwanda family. / Black Dog is pretty close to home, and I know I’m not the only one to think that way. There are many many images to make you smile as well. In fact the sad ones do make you smile as well, at least a little. The layout position of each story and photo is so well thought out. Each spread of pages is purposely put together to compliment each image, story or poem. It would have been so hard to choose between all the entries by the Bubblers, but those that were chosen are brilliant. Only one or two had me thinking ‘what is that doing here?’ but obviously they belonged. It just took me a while to see it. Each image and word led to deep thought… and tears, even at things that made me smile. Overall… it’s a beautiful publication. One that RedBubble and all the people involved with it’s creation should be proud of. It’s a strong, passionate book filled with Love, Hope and Truth. I highly recommend Compassion, Courage and Friendship to everyone and anyone. But I do think maybe a little pack of tissues should be sent with it…. one of those pretty little packets found in cheapshops or craft shops will do nicely.

/ / As I write this review I can almost here my ex-supervisor at the newspaper saying over my shoulder as I view the cover…”Missing hyphens and heaven forbid an ampersand in a title”. You see he was old school, a veteran from hot metal days and a stickler for rules of typography and layout. I on the other hand grew up in a different era and think the layout of the cover works well as it groups the words of passion, courage and friend together. When I delve further into the book I can hear him again, you should not mix font families together. On this one I tend to be in agreement, I would prefer to see san serif fonts used throughout in varying weights. / / / / On a brighter note he would have raved about the quality of the overall product as all the photos are in perfect registration and the trimming of the book is also spot on, something which was a bit hit and miss at the paper with special publications. / / The written works, photos and illustrations tear at the heart strings and draw the viewer into their meaning. The book is a brilliant compilation of the works of many talented people at Redbubble and is a credit to their professionalism as well as their individual characters. / / “Compassion, Courage and Friendship” would make the perfect coffee table book for you or a special present for someone you cherish. Keep an eye out for its release at the Redbubble Store which should be any day now.

COM / PASSION / COURAGE / & FRIEND / SHIP – A / Review It arrived today, nicely packaged in a hard cardboard container. Inside is a shrink wrapped book, taking off the wrap we can see it comes in its own slip cover. / The slip cover is a really nice touch,it protects the book from wear, dust, etc. The Book. Quality in every way. Quality paperback/w slipcover. 77 pages approx. 8 1/2” square perfect binding. Good solid book with a nicely laid out cover with images blending together. Very well laid out with each page having own image, poem or writing and the theme stays with the title throughout As with Redbubbles other two books the printing quality is top-level,two or three different typefaces have being used to bring across its message of Compassion,Courage and Friendship. Reading it and looking through it, it makes one think that peace on earth is really possible. I’m sure many more books are in the works, for these excellent books really show the world that the “BUBBLE” is all about this family of artists, no matter what their selected medium. Would I purchase this book,I have to say, yes, it would make a great gift for anyone. Changes. There is only one change that I can see could be made and that would be to put the artists link on the page where it is featured. / As it is you have to flip back and fourth looking for them. Overall an excellent quality buy for the money. The book can be purchased Here “May you create well and prosper” Alienvisitor’s Imagi – Nation AV
