/ / It would be such a pity to leave without a comment. Like it? Say so. Don’t like it? Say so too! With a bang, if that fits your style. I’d rather leave a negative impression (on someone) than nothing at all. DullNBoring is NOT my middle name. Neither my last (I knew you’d probably say that!) As for the first name, it’s on the front page. So, please go ahead, leave a note and make my day! A beautiful thought just occured to me, only to be gone before I could lock it in my memory. Now it’s free for the taker… only if you could see it and catch it. / / It would be such a pity to leave without a comment. Like it? Say so. Don’t like it? Say so too! Watercolor on board with a touch of pastel pencil, and gold dust. This painting was inspired by horses depicted in primitive art, primarily those found in caves in France. I like their full, round haunches and swollen pregnant bellies, delicate small heads and the tiny hooves at the end of slender match stick legs. I was thinking about shapeshifting, shaminic dream travel, dreams in general, and ancient beliefs in the goddesses who inspired dreams. The woman inside the horse’s belly is dream traveling. Ancient Celtic and Greek myth held that the goddess’ horses transport dreamers to other dimensions within their bellys. She could also be the tranced shapeshifter, traveling to other realms wearing the form of a horse. The poem I wrote incorporates symbols and colors of the Celtic Goddesss Rhiannon and another manifestation, Epona. In both aspects the goddess is conected with equines. There’s a small bird appearing from behind the main horse’s front hooves. Birds are messengers of the goddess and connected with her as helpers and infomranats as well. I slashed and painted ‘stitches’ on parts of the larger painting, indicating the way dreams begin to fragment as we awaken and the waking world once again becomes our reality. No matter how we try to repair the dream and return to its reality, the vision falls away like transparent veils and we awaken. Nightmares In the misty dimension of betwixt and between / Sun gold, blood crimson, leaf green, Dwell luminous birds of fantastic feathers / Their task to sing free the reasoning mind, / Loosen confining fetters and everyday tethers. Her sacred horses of long, tangled manes / Sun gold, blood crimson, leaf green Hooves restless they stand awaiting their task, / That of transporting bold spirits on the red – eye flight / To the borderland realm of night – fright. Escape is impossible, for there is no solution / Sun gold, blood crimson, leaf green Riddle and metaphor now collide with illusion. / The sleeper, gone mute, attempts a shrill scream, / When a voice whispers clear, quite close to the ear: / “My dear, its only a dream” Nightmares text, poem, and image copyright Helena Nelson -Reed

“The search for food was becoming more difficult, the snow and ice lay thick on the ground making it difficult for scavenging. It was nearly nightfall and the temperature was dropping quickly. It was time to return to the cave…........” / /

“The temperature was below freezing but the air seemed to have some warmth to it. It had been an exciting morning exploring the rocky ice caves in the far northern regions of the country. We were extremely excited when the first fossil was found in this area some months ago. It had taken some time to plan our expedition and then waiting for the right weather conditions. Everything seemed to be going smoothly until an hour ago when the first tremour hit us. We made our way back as quickly as possible to the cave entrance…...this could be dangerous and I didn’t want to take any unecessary risks. As we approached the cave entrance a huge tremour hit. Try running at your best with 12kg of equipment on your back, now that’s a challenge. There was an enormous loud rumble as we turned to see the entrance to our ice cave collapse….....” Macro photograph taken from a rock. Late afternoon no direct sunlight on the subject, camera set on apperture priority! I am passionate about macro photography, especially rocks, bark and flowers.

The intricate etchings on the bark of this this tree offer fascinating images that I was fortunate to discover walking to my car in West Hollywood, a suburb in Los Angeles. I took several photos of graffiti trees using my Macro lens and selected those that have multiple images, colors and texture. In this composition I perceive a vast landscape with villages, people and mountain trails. The graphic details on this tree remind me of the primitive imagery of cave art. There are many icons to discover and I always look forward to your projections in my series of graffiti trees.

I had the privilege to go into the cave at Hall Winery in Napa Valley California. It was incredibly beautiful. The hallway full of wine barrels led to a beautiful wine tasting room. The colors were really as golden as you see here.

cave art – information provided by wikipedia:
Cave Paintings are paintings on cave walls and ceilings, usually dating to prehistoric times. The earliest known European cave paintings date to 32,000 years ago. The purpose of the cave paintings is not known, and may never be. The evidence suggests that they were not merely decorations of living areas, since the caves in which they have been found do not have signs of ongoing habitation. Also, they are often in areas of caves that aren't easily accessed. Some theories hold that they may have been a way of transmitting information, while other theories ascribe them a religious or ceremonial purpose.RedBubble is a great place to find art, design, photos and writing from over 50,000 talented people.
