Squirrels are fun to watch but way too voracious in their eating habits. After chomping down an asparagus fern as his salad, one saucy fellow then scrambled up the pole to the bird feeder where he enjoyed sunflower seeds as his entree. Still not through, he pruned my yellow hibiscus for dessert. When these nervy diners are really hungry, they have even gnawed at my front door. Guess they need the roughage!

Squirrels aren’t easily fooled. Though I was sitting in a shooter’s blind, this fellow knew I was there, approached cautiously along this limb, stopped, and then made a u-turn back into the woods.

Even though I try to hide, Mrs. Bluebird’s no fool; she keeps looking warily over her shoulder. She knows I’m close by, but she tolerates me most of the time, so long as I don’t move much or do anything surprising or startling. Isn’t she a beauty?

This kitty was rescued as a baby, living in a hole under the sidewalk in front of my condo in Alexandria, VA, shortly after Valentines Day in 1990. I set a trap for this little baby cat I saw hiding in the bushes one day, before she ran down a hole. It took me three days to trap her, because she weighed less than 2 pounds and wasn’t heavy enough to trip the trap door, so she would eat the treats I left for her, and vanish again … pretty spooky, so that’s what I named her. / / When she was ten, I sold my condo and moved into a different apartment. This picture was taken on her first visit to what would become her new home. It reminds me that she really was a feral cat; though she socialized nicely and was very sweet with me, anything new or unfamiliar threw her for a loop, and she came that close to reverting. / / Once she survived a change, however, it made her stronger, and she was able to adapt to two more moves in her life, the biggest one was the move from Virginia to Florida. I knew she would make a good Florida kitty, though, because she did love to lie in a sunbeam, on her back, warming her belly. I miss her so much. / / This image was created from an old low-resolution photo, so it will probably be best in smaller size prints.
