I had to check the internet to determine for sure that this vegetable is actually called “broccoflower”, and yup it is! It’s a cross between cauliflower and broccoli, which begs the question, “How on Earth to they mate??” I guess if porcupines can figure out a way, ANYthing can! :) Oh, and I have no idea if the extended cone-shaped part of the broccoflower is called a horn, but when it’s curved like that, what else could I call it?
This is a shot of a Massey Ferguson 165 in semi retirement on a nice Palmerston North’s summer evening in New Zealand. This is the market garden where my father used to grow a host of vegetables both European and Chinese including celery, cabbage, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, strawberries, sweetcorn and more.

Fresh veg on a market stall in Wimborne Market, Dorset. / All the colours caught my eye. / I focussed on the middle of the stall to slightly ‘blur’ the front and rear of the veg, and also just showing some of the prospective buyers of the goods on display. 2 Recipes for Cauliflower and Tomatoes: I discovered the original recipe about 40 years ago and have used it several times a summer ever since then. I now use a steamer almost exclusively for cooking my vegetables, so adapted the original recipe to “Cauliflower & Tomatoes.” I got in a hurry one time and accidentally tossed some shredded cheddar cheese on the cooked veggies instead of the parmesan, and we now prefer it that way. The original recipe, which was from my 1963 edition of McCall’s Cookbook, follows my adaptation. Cauliflower and Tomatoes / (my adaptation) 1 head cauliflower, washed and broken or cut into bite-size flowerets / 1 cup chopped tomatoes / Garlic powder, salt & pepper / 1/3 cup Shredded mild cheddar cheese Steam cauliflower flowerets for approximately 15 minutes; sprinkle garlic powder, salt & pepper over cauliflower, add the chopped tomatoes and steam an additional 5 minutes. Pour into serving bowl, sprinkle shredded cheese over the top and serve. Cauliflower, Italian Style / (original recipe) 1 head cauliflower, salt, boiling water / 3 Tbs olive or salad oil / 1 clove garlic / ½ tsp salt / 1 cup chopped, peeled tomato / ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese / 1 Tbs chopped parsley 1. Wash cauliflower thoroughly; cut into flowerets. Cook, covered, in 1” lightly salted, boiling water until tender - about 10 minutes. Drain well. / 2. Slowly heat oil in large, heavy skillet. Add garlic; saute until golden - about 3 minutes. Remove garlic, and discard. / 3. In same skillet, combine cauliflower, salt, and tomato. Cook, stirring, about 3 minutes, or until vegetables are hot. / 4. Turn into serving dish; sprinkle with cheese and parsley. Preparation for a recipe using Cauliflower & tomatoes.
