Cattleya Orchids / Queen of Orchids / Mericlone / Tropical Gardens of Maui Hawai’i Cattleyas range in size from tiny miniatures perfect for window sill cultures to larger standard cats with spectacular 6 to 8 inch flowers blooming in the rainforest on Maui. Cattleyas have long been called the “Queen of Orchids” for their large flower size and wide range of colours.”

This beautiful pair of Cattleya Orchids was photographed under the light of two desk lamps of differing power on a camera club studio night. I had full control over the shot and am extremely pleased with the result. We were teaching members of the local orchid society how to make studio shots of their prize blooms then it was our turn to set ‘em up, light ‘em ‘n’ shoot ‘em. The orchid society gets a disc of our work as a “thank you”. Very beneficial to all concerned. Camera: Fujifilm Finepix S5500 4Mp. Tripod mounted, no flash. / Processing: S7RAW & Photoshop CS. ORCHIDS: STUDIO NIGHT / (Click the links!) Amroys Dark Star Cattleya Orchid 1/2 / L.perrinii Orchid 2/2 /

I took this photo in my glasshouse yesterday (21.03.2008) and tweaked the Levels and Hue and Saturation and came up with this. I like the “olde’ worlde” look it has given – the flower is actually a bright but pale purple with a much darker, velvet-appearing splash in the centre of the lip. I hope you enjoy this. thanks for looking. All comments and criticimsms are welcomed.
