kingston usa ** / His name is Jacob, although he said he is also called James. / Why? He said, ‘It’s a name. They are all only names.” / When I asked if I could take his photo, he dropped his dirty plastic bag and without smiling, said, ‘Oh, How pleased I’d be to be caught by you.’ / Jacob/James and I spoke for a while, mostly about his beloved cat, and how she hopped into the shower today. / “I took it as a hint,” he said, almost smiling, but only with his very blue eyes. “So I got in there and washed up me, and thought I might do with a change of clothes, too” / He still carries a slight accent he claims is a hold-over from when he was a young man in Wales. His children are all gone. His wife, long dead. / I thanked him, and was about to go on my way, when he leaned back into the window of my car. / “I want to tell you something important,” he said, his already world-weary expression looking more grim than before, ‘I want you to eat better. I want you to take care of your liver. I want you to always smile like you smile now, and I want you to know that the world may be cold, but somewhere there is sun and warmth. I want you to be happy. It’s what’s intended for you.” / He turned and walked away. Here, in my idle musings, / She sits / To watch the dawn break free of night; / To note the glint of dew / On busy night spiders’ work / Of web and light and mist. / Here, in my wishful thinking / She lives / To garner wisdom from the / Effortless sprint of deer, / The smoldering remnants of / Darkest hours / That cannot win over light. / Here, in my most fragile pith, / She breathes impossible colors of / Hope. / We sit amidst autumn fields, / Hold our breath… / And wait /

She grieves no more for what is gone / as falling leaves leap to feed old ground. She is merely one minute scrap on autumn forest path, Where she walks the walk we all must take- / And bends, and mends, anew each day, / so not to break. / No more will the dead’s requiem bleat out regret- / She will pray sing-songs of great joy, instead. Just as sapling to falling leaf she is / A portion of all that is and has been. / The din of grief cannot abide / When pushed aside for life’s great joy. / And if the dead think to justify their greed, / She will smile and bend to a bashed knee, / But will not be broken. * / Finding lessons from nature, a refresher course of sorts, as I begin yet another season in my life after what felt to be a long Winter of loss. / /
