Sorry to all those who don’t like “pets and babies” photos… ;) This is my kitty trying to catch a fly on the window last night… The sun was coming down into our living room which gave that nice glow on one side of his face. I was originally going to make it all black & white but I just couldn’t bring myself to leave his gorgeous blue eye out! Update 22/03/2009: / Thanks to all your comments this photo is now on page #1 of the “most popular pictures of all times”! Please leave a comment and/or favourite it to help me keep it up there !! / Thank you all again for your support! :))

Scratch, our Siamese, photographed with what would on a normal day be his dinner. Birds were shot at a local pet store and added in Photoshop. As the birds were photoraphed in cages, the bars they were behind had to be cloned out, and this took a lot of time and patience. Addition of shadows and direction of lighting effects were important factors to getting the image to look realistic.

This is OJ. Alas, no longer with us as he passed away very young. Here his eyes were just changeing color and I thought I’d try to get a pose out of him. Trouble was keeping him awake long enough to get a shot. Seconds after taking this, he slumped down into the jar, deep in little kitty dreamland. It wasn’t even easy getting him out !

It’s not everyday you get to see a species known for its ferocity, showing tenderness instead. These are two Lion brothers (captivity) who had spent most of the morning playfully teasing each other before they sat down to…well….no other word for it – “cuddle”. This was the only shot I got that worked as they were partially obscured by a toy in their enclosure. On review I was very lucky, not only was there a beautiful symmetry in the lions’ head positions, but both eyes were closed in the ‘moment’ as well. The image has been edited for a more dramatic effect and to perfectly isolate the two animals and their experience. A stray cat wandered into my house and gave birth in a flower pot (not very smart). I then moved the kitten into a shoe-box and padded it with clothes to make a nice soft bed! This was taken when it was still in the pot.

Meet baby Butterfly – possibly the cutest kitten ive ever seenfrom the RSPCA WA, Perth. I took the shot on a table, with a small black dog bed on it, and the blanket Butterfly is sitting on is placed on top of that. There was a window in the direction of her tilted head, so side-on to me. I used a Canon 50mm prime lens at about f2.2 to get a sharp nose and eyes but blurred background. I use this technique mostly when im shooting in very low light and particularly for the RSPCA as it gives an etheral and more emotive feel to the shots i think. The rest of this room was quite dark as the RSPCA movie was being filmed in it at the same time. Butterfly was too fragile to be on the floor with the larger kittens, so i took a break in taking stills of the movie making process and babysat her for a while, on my makeshift ‘studio’. Her story – This is a 5 week old kitten called Butterfly. She was found abandoned at 1 week old with her brother, wrapped in a towel and dumped in a park. Her brother didnt make it, and Butterfly has had her battles but she is doing well and will be ok. I was lucky enough to get to spend an hour with her taking photos and talking cat talk out at the RSPCA WA headquateres. She is so tiny and so cute…I fell in love. The RSPCA vet nurse is going to take her home as soon as she has grown and doesnt need monitored care. Taken with a Canon 5D and Canon 50mm prime lens @ f 2.2, ISO 800 1/200th sec. Natural window light used. Handheld. No editing. Profit portion of any sales will go to the RSPCA WA. Featured in Cats & Dogs Group (twice), and The Photographers Craft. Won “Best Animal Photo” in the As Is Group Challenge and is currently the Avatar for that group (14th Feb 09). Featured in Kittens Group & As Is Group, June 2009. Placed in top 10 (#4) in Kittens Group “Blue Eyes” Challenge, June 2009. Placed in top ten (#3) in All Soft and Cuddlies Group Challenge “Cuddle Up Kitty”, June 2009.
