A request from father to son since time immemorial. Really. For the Flash Fiction Challenge. Inspired by Danny’s Pull my Finger. “Pull my finger” said dad / “No” replied the son / “Go on , it’s a surprise” / “Dad, I’m thirteen. It isn’t even funny anymore” / “Go on, humour your old man” / “NO” / “Come on for your dear old dad’s sake. It’s been brewin’ for a while” / The son knew he would never get to fully enjoy the television show he was watching unless he complied with this age old ritual. / The son took his father’s finger and in a moment of cheekiness decided to push instead of pull. / The last thing the son remembers of his father was the look of shock and pain seconds before he exploded. Questions by Jo O’Brien / Answers by Cathie Tranent How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? As a part time wage slave and full time wife and mother, I find the pursuit of my “artistic” side gives me some “Cathie” time, that I might not necessarily have taken otherwise. I have always been an “average” person, average grades, sporting non performer, and to find something that people tell me I’m good at is a real boost to self!! I am being very careful to make sure that the thronging masses are cared for, fed, watered and wearing clean clothes, but I can assure you that my housework standards have slipped a little since the advent of my RB addiction. Tell us about one person or moment that has made your time on redbubble particularly special or meaningful Only one? There have been so many amazing moments … my first sale to someone I didn’t know, the inspiration and fun I have shared with so many people, meeting on-line friends in person for the very first time … making new friends almost every day. Show & tell us about five works on redbubble that have moved or inspired you The first one would have to be Danny’s Binalong Avenue. I think it touches a chord in all our memories, of Christmases past, and family scattered. Absolutely anything from Incognita. Again – a little bit of Cog in all of us I think. TBO’s Geishas. All of them – traditionally beautiful, yet somehow modern and empowered. I can’t split the next two – so they’ll just have to be 4a and 4b. / No Frills Art and Ruby Red have shown me that having a social conscience and making people aware of the big issues doesn’t have to mean standing on a street corner with a sign. The Pen is Mightier than the Sword 3 / Rhinobra I’m also amazed at the rate at which this pair upload quality thought provoking work. And last, but by no means least, the other most inspiring people on this site would have to be the people who started this amazing Redbubble thing, the Helvetica Cliche- . Not only for having the vision, but for employing the right people to help it grow, teethe and grow some more. (And besides that – they still find time to make art themselves!!) Keep an eye on Cathie’s Journal. She’ll be posting a survey like this too soon. I wonder who she’ll interview?

For my featured page, I’ve used one of my favourite ways to look around Redbubble, started with one tag, (in this case, spirit) which lead me to another and then something different and so on. I soon noticed a pattern forming in the work I was drawn to – richly textured pictures, blurring the line between photography and drawing – not genre specific but just a feast for the eyes. This journey has certainly added a few new artists to my watchlist – I hope you find something here you like too! Cathie Tranent

Cats, Daughters and Your Typical Dad His daughter sat in a chair stroking the cat. / He was next to her in his recliner reading a book on Argentinean Death Squads. / “Daddy?” / “Yes Dear” / “Daddy, why don’t cats make noises when they fart?” / Valid question he thought. / “It’s because they have fur around their bum, it acts as a silencer” / She nodded, happy with the answer. / “I’m glad I don’t have fur ‘round my bum” she said / “Why’s that dear?” He asked. / “Then farts wouldn’t be funny” / Out of the mouth of babes I thought as he felt a big one brewing and shifted in his seat to finish this conversation on a high note.

Details are here for those who chose to ignore my journal. :) Being the festive season and all, I’ve decided to reward red-headed Cathie Tranent and the pom (not porn) Stuart Chapman for their exceedingly brilliant contributions. Congratulations to Cathie and Stuart for bothering to enter this highly prestigious competition and I trust you both hang the calendar with a wee touch of pride on the back of your dunny door. Given that Stuart continually takes the piss out of his friends, and Cathie continually inflicts her warped sense of humour on the unsuspecting RedBubble members, I invite them both to step forward to the solid-gold podium wearing only their hats to make an off-the-cuff speech to the gathered RedBubble thong, I mean throng.
