I took pictures of a caterpillar that I found in my garden. When I downloaded to my computer I nearly fell off the chair when I saw this shot. It was looking right at the camera and it looks to me like it’s wearing one of those Voodoo masks!!...............LOL
The gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, is one of North America’s most devastating forest pests. The species originally evolved in Europe and Asia and has existed there for thousands of years. In either 1868 or 1869, the gypsy moth was accidentally introduced near Boston, MA by E. Leopold Trouvelot. About 10 years after this introduction, the first outbreaks began in Trouvelot’s neighborhood and in 1890 the State and Federal Government began their attempts to eradicate the gypsy moth. These attempts ultimately failed and since that time, the range of gypsy moth has continued to spread. Every year, isolated populations are discovered beyond the contiguous range of the gypsy moth but these populations are eradicated or they disappear without intervention. It is inevitable that gypsy moth will continue to expand its range in the future.

Most people have cats or dogs as pets, but not this little miss. She’s adores insects and has made friends with a darling little blue caterpillar. The name ‘inchworm’ is from a song in the 1952 film, Hans Christian Anderson – which I’m fairly sure was redone by the Muppets. :) ..................♥ the fine print ♥…............... That magnificent butterfly the (Glasswing) ! (-: One of God’s Wonders, lives in South America A butterfly with transparent wings is rare and beautiful. As delicate as finely blown glass, the refined beauty of a stained glass window, the translucent wings of the Glasswing Butterfly shimmer in the sunlight like polished panes of turquoise, orange, green, and red. with See-through wings, which makes it hard to see against the background foliage…

My son called me the other afternoon to tell me I needed to come to his bus stop to see a ‘big green caterpillar’. I hung up the phone thinking…’ho, hum. just another bug’....but…...I could see this thing half a block away! It was the size of a typical cigar…....and still has plenty of time to go before it’ll cocoon up. This is the HUGE beautiful Polyphemus moth larva…one of North America’s largest silk moth species. / Of course I let him go back up his tree to finish his stages (the branch he was on had fallen to the ground)...after taking his photos. / Photographed this past summer in NE Kansas.

“Just when the Caterpillar thought her world was over… She became a butterfly.” Remember the Butterfly… / The butterfly starts by crawling around for months, as a lowly caterpillar. / Then it hibernates for months in its dark coccoon. / But it finally emerges with glorious freedom of movement and magnificence in color. / Who would have guessed that an earthbound caterpillar, would someday fly so high or that out of a drab coccoon could come such vibrant colors? This is a marker drawing for an illustration for my book 7C’s, photographed, played with a bit in photoshop and fractilius. / This is dedicated to ROMO who reminds me of a butterfly…as do many other sisters here… She’s a butterfly /

Although it is not common knowledge, Alice continued to return to Wonderland well into adulthood. Apparently, once one has been immersed in that caliber of strangeness, it’s hard not to go back. Here Alice is pictured having a chat and a spot of tea with her old friend, the Caterpillar, who, it turns out, is female and named Zanzibara. A small snail slithers over to offer a Hello. Not sure yet the type of caterpillar…but the mushrooms is called a Blewitt. An edible found in the fall here in the Mid West. I tried to pick up the caterpillar yesterday when it was FREEZING and the poor thing just curled right up on the stem. I think it’d been there trying to conserve heat. / After I photographed it, I piled some leaves around it for a windbreak. At least it wasn’t raining…but we did get a freeze last night.
