Phew. I’ve been working at ‘re-looking’ at my cards from a different perspective … a more ‘marketable’ one! Not easy to do really … being objective about one’s work, well … Anyway, I’ve made a few changes, a few additions, some new angles to the same cards. I’m hoping that Red Bubble will eventually provide some way in which we can categorise the cards, i.e. Holidays, Events, Floral, Abstract, Thank You, etc etc ad infinitum. Red Bubble? I’ve been so busy sorting out my present wee body of work and getting a database down and trying to set up a small new business (TONS of work there!) that, ironically,I’ve hardly had time to sit and draw - how do you folks manage to do it all?! There just aren’t those hours in the day, where are they? My brains are still relatively addled from lack of sleep and computer-screen-itis, so forgive the ramble. Perhaps I’ll soon be able to relax again and enjoy looking at all your wonderful artwork. Cheers!

Hi everyone…....well, I will be adding some new pieces to my portfolio this weekend some time and just wanted to mention in advance that things may be a bit chaotic (Helter – Skelter) since we don’t have categories or folders to load to…............I’ll do my best to load in some sort of an orderly fashion, but no promises!

Thanks to Mel Brackstone for helping me with this…Ok, here we go… … Actually 1st make sure you put your title and your name (first or last or both) / in your tags (where you edit your image) / - eg Tags (under description) type – landscapes cathleen tarawhiti (use your name silly) / Save now. Then you are ready for this — 1 – choose your title – eg Landscapes 2 – surround with these things ” – eg “Landscapes” 3 – then a colon to separate title from URL of the category page it is going on – eg ” Landscapes ” : (put The : word and ” altogether; I can’t here as it turns into a real link and you can’t read what your meant to put) 4 – then I’d advise having another RedBubble page open, type in landscapes (or anything) to get to the search results page. Now type in your name and landscapes in search.. You should come up with this image you are working on (because you tagged it). And the title should say ‘Your Name Landscapes Wall Art and more’. 5 – Now go to the top of this page and right click the URL (the great big stream of words and symbols; that is the address of where you are now). Copy. 6 – paste this URL back on your photo edit page straight after Landscapes> 7 – then one of these / then landscapes 8 – so it looks similar to this ” Landscapes” : http: //www.redbubble .com/search/find/? search%5Bsearch%5D=+cathleen+tarawhiti+landscapes&search%5Bhidden_search%5D= / landscapes (once again, push everything together) and then this happens Landscapes 9 – SAVE 10 – cross fingers Once again, big thanks to Mel Brackstone for explaining this to me and not spitting the dummy once.

  • My RedBubble Wish List .....Categories, Comments etc.,

RB are always looking for suggestions and I suggested the following in one of the threads at the main RB forums. I’ve received some mail in support of this and thought I’d post a Journal entry in the hopes of catching RB’s attention. Categories I’d like to see categories on both the home page of RB and our own home page. When uploading your image you would be presented with a drop down menu that has the different categories, simply click this and it will automatically go into the correct folder. If anyone has had anything to do with the Coppermine Photo Galleries, this will be very familiar to you. The categories could go something like this …. any suggestions welcome here folks. Writing – Clothing – Artwork – Landscapes – Portraits – Animals – Macro – Other – Nature ….. or something similar, I’ve probably missed a few from that. Comments I think that comments we post on people’s work should only be seen by members of the RB community. Visitors – read potential buyers for visitors – should not have access to the RB main forums either. I believe this will keep the ‘integrity’ of RB more along the lines that it appears to aspire to. Anyways, that’s my two cents worth and I’d appreciate any feedback on this.

Just in case anyone else needs this, you can find the instructions to make categories and links for your categories in a text file on my server. This makes it easier to see the code because it cuts out RB’s mark-up parser. Hope this helps!

  • How To Add Categories on your Profile Page
    by Tom Gomez

I have organised my pictures into Category pages linked from the Profile page by hyperlinks. If you want to know how to do it, follow the instructions below. It is a little complicated, but like all things, with a bit of practice, it will become easier. First, let’s look at the example. This gives me another opportunity to shamelessly showcase my own work. I’m always happy to take any opportunity to stick my work under your noses. (While you are looking, just think: MUST BUY TOM’S WORK, MUST BUY TOM’S WORK, MUST BUY TOM’S WORK). First, I want you to go visit my Profile Page to see the example. Details are below, but before you go there, read on: Once you reach my Profile Page, just scroll down a little and you will see that I have a list of underlined words; Rome, Florence, Pisa, etc. These are the hyperlinks to my Category Pages. Just click on any link, for example, click on Santorini, and you will be taken to a Category Page containing small versions of my Santorini pictures. On this page, you just need to click on any of the small pictures to be taken to the real page for that picture. Just click on the following link to go to my Profile Page: Tom’s Profile Page and test out my hyperlinks. OK, if you would like to do something similar then here we go: The method is as follows: / It is best to create your links in the Notepad application on your PC. I need to explain it, because if I type it here exactly as you need to do, RedBubble will convert the link into a real hyperlink in my Journal Page. CAUTION: / If you are using a text editor to creat your links, DO NOT USE A RICH TEXT EDITOR like MSWord as the double quotes will not work in redbubble. MSWord will produce curly double quotes (like this: “ ”). You MUST have straight double-quotes (like this: ” “). Look closely, there is a difference. Category Pages make use of the Tags that you add to your pictures when you upload them. In my Santorini example, I wrote the word santorini in the Tags entry area on the Edit page when I added the artwork to RedBubble. If you have not done this already, then you can add an appropriate tag via the Edit page for each of your pictures and save the edit. Once you have the Tags in place, you can now construct the Category Page hyperlinks. Type a double-quote (“) Then the name that you want to use in the hyperlink (make sure you have no spaces). Type another double-quote (“) Then a full-colon (:) Then http://www.redbubble.com/people/ Then your name – this is the name that you are called in RedBubble (in my case, it is tomg) Then /art/everything/tags/ Then the tag you want to point to – in my example, this would be santorini It should look something like this: / ” Santorini ” : http://www.redbubble.com/people/tomg/art/everything/tags/santorini / But without the spaces. You can then repeat this for each hyperlink you want to construct. Remember to change the tag at the end (change santorini for another tag). If you want the hyperlinks to be on separate lines, then just type them that way (with a carriage return between each entry). If you want the hyperlinks to appear on the same line, then you could insert a space between each hyperlink or some other character or characters to separate the hyperlinks. I use .. To make this spacer, or something similar: After your hyperlink, insert a space Type an asterisk Type the character(s) you want to use – in my case .. Type an asterisk – the asterisks at either end just make it appear bold on the page Insert a space before the next hyperlink. Be careful about how many hyperlinks you put on one line. There is not a lot of room to work with and your hyperlinks will wrap over lines if you make the line to long. Once you have typed it all into Notepad, highlight all of the text and copy it to your mouse buffer. Go to the Edit Your Profile page and scroll down to the About you entry area. Think about where you want the hyperlinks to appear in your Profile Page and paste the copied text into this window at that point. When you are finished, scroll to the bottom of the Edit Your Profile page and press the Save Changes button. That should be it. Now you can go to your Profile page and check that it all worked. Let me know if you find this useful or indeed if you have any problems. Cheers, / Tom You can find all my How To Tutorials by clicking here.

“Gaia – The Living Planet” is coming to life. All twelve people who have been involved in shortlisting and judging for the publication have been deeply moved by the works submitted. If our wonderful earth has hope, it is in the hope, vision and courage displayed by all the artists who have contributed. The overall category winners are below. We think you will agree that these works capture something exceptional. In a few weeks we will have finished the design of the book. This is not a quick process as we aim to honor the work and the importance of the Gaia itself through the quality of design of the final publication. When this is complete and the book is for sale we will announce all those who are to be published. / Read more about “Gaia – The Living Planet here and more about out 9 judges here Overall Visual Art Winner Dryad by Helena Nelson-Reed / One of the judges simply commented: “stunning art”. Helena’s interest in mysticism is melded in this image with a living vitality. This image has an otherworldly quality while shedding a light on our world in the here-and-now. / Category Winners: Photography There were two winners in the category of Photography which scored the same marks from the judges. They show us Gaia from two different, but complementary angles. In Utero by Kitsmumma / The connection between our human vulnerability and the apparent solidity of the earth that nourishes us is beautifully portrayed in this fine artwork. The Covenant by Phil Thomson / The threat of loss and the promise of new life are framed in this single, beautiful image. / Category Winner: Traditional Evadne by Nadia Turner / This image has a delicacy of touch and depth of symbolism which took our collective breath away. Category Winner: Digital Image GAIA by Charles Winslow / The use of digital art at its finest to create an image impossible by any other medium – an earth mother completely apart of her world. Overall Writing Winners / Two written works got exactly the same marks from the judges. We certainly are not going to try and separate them. They both leave echos long after they are read. Holiday by abletsandtoast is in the words of one of our judges “An amazing piece, illuminating the relationship between people and place”. Boilingdown Creek by PinkElephant is as dry as “Holiday” was cold. The diversity of Gaia fully on display. Category Winner: Poetry A Gift of Flowers by Louise Kuskovski will leave you with a strange sense of sorrow as it hints at a greater meaning. Category Winners: Short Story Again we had two winners in the short story category and rather than splitting hairs we are splitting prizes. Benwerrin Road by Rainmemory will probably catch you by delicious surprise. Storm Joy by Panda65 has a depth of humanity that warms your fingers as you read.

  • Regarding Image Categories, Buyers and Groups
    by Rebecca Cruz

I’ve posted the following in the forums...

I’ve posted the following in the forums but have decided to create a journal entry on it also, it’s something I feel strongly about! I’ve said the following before in bits and pieces in response to different forum topics on group and buyer issues, but I feel it really does need to be said fully and in it’s own thread. I believe that until RedBubble implements a categorization method for artists to sort their images and buyers to find artwork, many of the issues and dissent we are seeing with groups will remain. I also believe that without this image categorization, many potential non-member buyers become frustrated with attempting to find images that suit their needs. It seems to me that a vast majority of RB members view groups as nothing more than a way to sort and categorize their images. Flower images are submitted to a Flower Group, not because the artist has a passion for flower art and wishes to participate with a group of equally passionate Flower Art enthusiasts, but rather simply because their image has a flower in it and they believe submitting it to a group is the best way to categorize their art for it to be found by potential buyers. Because of groups being used for image sorting they are not being used as artist-interactive communities. This leads to overwhelmed and frustrated hosts and artists, resulting in hurt feelings over rejected images, anger over group guidelines and general unrest and upset. Many seem to believe that not being able to include their artwork in a group is limiting their exposure to buyers. When in reality, the likelihood of a non-member using the groups to search for their next artwork purchase is very slim. Many wish groups to be more interactive and participatory, however they are at odds against those who have no desire for this and simply want a place to sort their images. If we had an image categorization method, independent of keywords, buyers would have an easier way to locate the artwork they are searching for. A buyer would have the option to choose (for example) Photography – Nature – Flowers and would then be presented with all flower images, regardless of what group that image belongs to. I think that with this system in place, groups would be much more likely to become what I see they were meant to be: Communities of like-minded artists that wish to participate together and share a passion for a particular artistic subject or medium. This categorization feature, to me, is one of the most essential features that RB could implement. Most importantly, it would facilitate buyers in making their way through the multitude of images on the website and secondly I believe that when members understand that groups are not meant for categorizing their artwork for buyers, it would go a long way to solving many of the issues we are seeing with groups.

Adding lists of categories to your profile or descriptions:- The first, and most important thing you need to do is tag your work, making sure the tags are relevant. People search for subjects, colours, locations…all sorts of things! When you are tagging for your categories, make sure you use categories that are going to make sense to you. My seascape tag is “beach” and I’ll add it to all my seascapes. When doing a category link, it’s just a matter of bringing them all together using this url http://www.redbubble.com/people/melbrackstone/art/everything/tags/beach For your own categories, of course, you change melbrackstone to your own nick/or name….and if it’s t-shirts or writing you might need to change those words too…just check out the results by pasting it into your browser. Then we come back to making a link. Using the quotes around your title – “Seascapes” then a colon : and then the url, the link will look like this Seascapes There are no spaces between the quotes, colon or url….. get to it everyone, tag and categorise your work!! Bullet list them with the hash key, and a space….

I’ve just found that my image Gladesville Cameo No 1...

I’ve just found that my image Gladesville Cameo No 1 has won Best of Category (Still Life) for March on the www.Shutterbugs.biz site – the prize is iConnect OneClick software! This free site is international, it has ‘photo of the day ‘awards for eight categories (seven days a week), and, for financial members, it extends then to monthly and annual prizes also. It is not a labour intensive ‘social’ site requiring heaps of time, but it pits you against excellent work from around the globe and helps challenge your comfort zone. Great for growth!!!

  • Categories links for your images in your “My Profile page”
    by barnsis

To see if this is something you might find would enhance to your profile page check out our Profile Page...

To see if this is something you might find would enhance to your profile page check out our Profile Page and click on one or more of the “Quick links to our images” There you will find a list of quick links to the different categories of images displayed on my pages here on RB. I have never been sure if anyone uses them however. When I go to other member’s pages to look their work I rarely use the category links they may have created; I simply go to the images and search through the thumbnail pages. Recently, when I went to a Redbubble friend’s page and clicked on one of their category links I was surprised when I was not taken to the normal thumbnails page. I was sent by their link to their Bubblesite, where they had fully organized the images they have displayed here on Redbubble, I was not taken to the thumbnails page. What a great idea! It is a very attractively formatted page where images may be viewed in categories designated by the artist. It also contains purchase information associated with each image in an easily viewable format. I asked how this was created in RB and they shared the information with me. The only downfall is the comments section of Redbubble can not be applied within the pages of the Bubblesite…perhaps this will come in the future so that all visitors to RB may leave a comment. However that remains an option from the thumbnail pages that most members view regularly. So here it is! First you will need to set up your Bubblesite with all images you wish displayed to the public placed in categories named and chosen by you, the RB artist. If you do not place your images loaded in RB into the Bubblesite categories, they will not display for public viewing! This sounds like a daunting task. However, the bubble site works well for moving images into the categories and placing your images in the order you want them to appear, so that in each category they are displayed as you wish them to be viewed. Then, when you open the first category from the Bubblesite and look at the (html://www) address bar at the top of your browser you will see a number in that address “Sunsets”: http: //barnsis.redbubble.com/sets/12345/works (Note I have added two spaces between Sunsets”: and http:// in the preceding html script line so it does not appear as a link in this journal) That number is the identification number Redbubble has assigned for that category item. Make a list of the names and numbers for each CATEGORY you have created in the Bubblesite (not the images) you have placed in the category. My site contains 17 pages of images, it took me three hours to define categories with appropriate names, move the images to their respective categories, make a list of the category names and numbers…well worth the time invested! I started from scratch by removing what few images I had already placed in my Bubblesite. / NOTE: By starting from scratch I was encouraged to set up my Bubblesite fully for the first time! NOW: We use the “About You” section of the “Edit my Profile” page to place links for the images so they will show up in our profile page, so instead of the html script most of us use for tag links simply use this html script. / “Sunsets”: http://barnsis.redbubble.com/sets/12345/works (Note again I have added two spaces between the colon ( : ) and the http so the link does not work here). You will need to take those spaces out and make it one ongoing script without spaces. I also have added the ( * ) asterisk at the beginning and end of the statement to make it appear in bold print. I copied and pasted this script for each category I had created in my Bubblesite. I then went back, changed the name and number in each line of html script; finally copying the entire list, and pasting it into the “About You” section of “Edit my Profile” One additional note do not use Microsoft Word to do copy and paste work to go into Redbubble. Word places hidden characters in text that Redbubble does not recognize so links will often not work if pasted from Word. I use Note Pad for all my Redbubble copy and paste work. Once you have completed this html script for each category name in your Bubblesite you are done! It is advisable to log out of Redbubble and back into allow for a total refresh of your browser, enabling correct display on your system to review your work just completed. Please note the friend who shared this information with me, elected not to be identified in this journal.

Many thanks to the anonymous buyer of Faded Rose as a mounted print (16 May 09) ... I am honoured. I trust it gives you great pleasure! Among other featureds, challenge wins and ‘top tens’ recently, is a very pleasing Best of Category win for the Theme “Light” for the Month of April on Shutterbugs.biz. The BOC is subject to vote by quite a few people so I was quite chuffed. The winning image was Toward the Lilypond. When I get photographer’s block, or am underwhelmed by my latest offerings, it is the encouragement and comments of my peers that gets me moving again – so thank you everyone for persevering. AND can I encourage you, in turn, to have a go … it is amazing how many people will love something that you may think twice about uploading!
