“Gaia – The Living Planet” is coming to life. All twelve people who have been involved in shortlisting and judging for the publication have been deeply moved by the works submitted. If our wonderful earth has hope, it is in the hope, vision and courage displayed by all the artists who have contributed. The overall category winners are below. We think you will agree that these works capture something exceptional. In a few weeks we will have finished the design of the book. This is not a quick process as we aim to honor the work and the importance of the Gaia itself through the quality of design of the final publication. When this is complete and the book is for sale we will announce all those who are to be published. / Read more about “Gaia – The Living Planet here and more about out 9 judges here Overall Visual Art Winner Dryad by Helena Nelson-Reed / One of the judges simply commented: “stunning art”. Helena’s interest in mysticism is melded in this image with a living vitality. This image has an otherworldly quality while shedding a light on our world in the here-and-now. / Category Winners: Photography There were two winners in the category of Photography which scored the same marks from the judges. They show us Gaia from two different, but complementary angles. In Utero by Kitsmumma / The connection between our human vulnerability and the apparent solidity of the earth that nourishes us is beautifully portrayed in this fine artwork. The Covenant by Phil Thomson / The threat of loss and the promise of new life are framed in this single, beautiful image. / Category Winner: Traditional Evadne by Nadia Turner / This image has a delicacy of touch and depth of symbolism which took our collective breath away. Category Winner: Digital Image GAIA by Charles Winslow / The use of digital art at its finest to create an image impossible by any other medium – an earth mother completely apart of her world. Overall Writing Winners / Two written works got exactly the same marks from the judges. We certainly are not going to try and separate them. They both leave echos long after they are read. Holiday by abletsandtoast is in the words of one of our judges “An amazing piece, illuminating the relationship between people and place”. Boilingdown Creek by PinkElephant is as dry as “Holiday” was cold. The diversity of Gaia fully on display. Category Winner: Poetry A Gift of Flowers by Louise Kuskovski will leave you with a strange sense of sorrow as it hints at a greater meaning. Category Winners: Short Story Again we had two winners in the short story category and rather than splitting hairs we are splitting prizes. Benwerrin Road by Rainmemory will probably catch you by delicious surprise. Storm Joy by Panda65 has a depth of humanity that warms your fingers as you read.

  • How To Add Categories on your Profile Page

I have organised my pictures into Category pages linked from the Profile page by hyperlinks. If you want to know how to do it, follow the instructions below. It is a little complicated, but like all things, with a bit of practice, it will become easier. First, let’s look at the example. This gives me another opportunity to shamelessly showcase my own work. I’m always happy to take any opportunity to stick my work under your noses. (While you are looking, just think: MUST BUY TOM’S WORK, MUST BUY TOM’S WORK, MUST BUY TOM’S WORK). First, I want you to go visit my Profile Page to see the example. Details are below, but before you go there, read on: Once you reach my Profile Page, just scroll down a little and you will see that I have a list of underlined words; Rome, Florence, Pisa, etc. These are the hyperlinks to my Category Pages. Just click on any link, for example, click on Santorini, and you will be taken to a Category Page containing small versions of my Santorini pictures. On this page, you just need to click on any of the small pictures to be taken to the real page for that picture. Just click on the following link to go to my Profile Page: Tom’s Profile Page and test out my hyperlinks. OK, if you would like to do something similar then here we go: The method is as follows: / It is best to create your links in the Notepad application on your PC. I need to explain it, because if I type it here exactly as you need to do, RedBubble will convert the link into a real hyperlink in my Journal Page. CAUTION: / If you are using a text editor to creat your links, DO NOT USE A RICH TEXT EDITOR like MSWord as the double quotes will not work in redbubble. MSWord will produce curly double quotes (like this: “ ”). You MUST have straight double-quotes (like this: ” “). Look closely, there is a difference. Category Pages make use of the Tags that you add to your pictures when you upload them. In my Santorini example, I wrote the word santorini in the Tags entry area on the Edit page when I added the artwork to RedBubble. If you have not done this already, then you can add an appropriate tag via the Edit page for each of your pictures and save the edit. Once you have the Tags in place, you can now construct the Category Page hyperlinks. Type a double-quote (“) Then the name that you want to use in the hyperlink (make sure you have no spaces). Type another double-quote (“) Then a full-colon (:) Then http://www.redbubble.com/people/ Then your name – this is the name that you are called in RedBubble (in my case, it is tomg) Then /art/everything/tags/ Then the tag you want to point to – in my example, this would be santorini It should look something like this: / ” Santorini ” : http://www.redbubble.com/people/tomg/art/everything/tags/santorini / But without the spaces. You can then repeat this for each hyperlink you want to construct. Remember to change the tag at the end (change santorini for another tag). If you want the hyperlinks to be on separate lines, then just type them that way (with a carriage return between each entry). If you want the hyperlinks to appear on the same line, then you could insert a space between each hyperlink or some other character or characters to separate the hyperlinks. I use .. To make this spacer, or something similar: After your hyperlink, insert a space Type an asterisk Type the character(s) you want to use – in my case .. Type an asterisk – the asterisks at either end just make it appear bold on the page Insert a space before the next hyperlink. Be careful about how many hyperlinks you put on one line. There is not a lot of room to work with and your hyperlinks will wrap over lines if you make the line to long. Once you have typed it all into Notepad, highlight all of the text and copy it to your mouse buffer. Go to the Edit Your Profile page and scroll down to the About you entry area. Think about where you want the hyperlinks to appear in your Profile Page and paste the copied text into this window at that point. When you are finished, scroll to the bottom of the Edit Your Profile page and press the Save Changes button. That should be it. Now you can go to your Profile page and check that it all worked. Let me know if you find this useful or indeed if you have any problems. Cheers, / Tom You can find all my How To Tutorials by clicking here.

Thanks to Mel Brackstone for helping me with this…Ok, here we go… … Actually 1st make sure you put your title and your name (first or last or both) / in your tags (where you edit your image) / - eg Tags (under description) type – landscapes cathleen tarawhiti (use your name silly) / Save now. Then you are ready for this — 1 – choose your title – eg Landscapes 2 – surround with these things ” – eg “Landscapes” 3 – then a colon to separate title from URL of the category page it is going on – eg ” Landscapes ” : (put The : word and ” altogether; I can’t here as it turns into a real link and you can’t read what your meant to put) 4 – then I’d advise having another RedBubble page open, type in landscapes (or anything) to get to the search results page. Now type in your name and landscapes in search.. You should come up with this image you are working on (because you tagged it). And the title should say ‘Your Name Landscapes Wall Art and more’. 5 – Now go to the top of this page and right click the URL (the great big stream of words and symbols; that is the address of where you are now). Copy. 6 – paste this URL back on your photo edit page straight after Landscapes> 7 – then one of these / then landscapes 8 – so it looks similar to this ” Landscapes” : http: //www.redbubble .com/search/find/? search%5Bsearch%5D=+cathleen+tarawhiti+landscapes&search%5Bhidden_search%5D= / landscapes (once again, push everything together) and then this happens Landscapes 9 – SAVE 10 – cross fingers Once again, big thanks to Mel Brackstone for explaining this to me and not spitting the dummy once.

  • Regarding Image Categories, Buyers and Groups
    by Rebecca Cruz

I’ve posted the following in the forums...

I’ve posted the following in the forums but have decided to create a journal entry on it also, it’s something I feel strongly about! I’ve said the following before in bits and pieces in response to different forum topics on group and buyer issues, but I feel it really does need to be said fully and in it’s own thread. I believe that until RedBubble implements a categorization method for artists to sort their images and buyers to find artwork, many of the issues and dissent we are seeing with groups will remain. I also believe that without this image categorization, many potential non-member buyers become frustrated with attempting to find images that suit their needs. It seems to me that a vast majority of RB members view groups as nothing more than a way to sort and categorize their images. Flower images are submitted to a Flower Group, not because the artist has a passion for flower art and wishes to participate with a group of equally passionate Flower Art enthusiasts, but rather simply because their image has a flower in it and they believe submitting it to a group is the best way to categorize their art for it to be found by potential buyers. Because of groups being used for image sorting they are not being used as artist-interactive communities. This leads to overwhelmed and frustrated hosts and artists, resulting in hurt feelings over rejected images, anger over group guidelines and general unrest and upset. Many seem to believe that not being able to include their artwork in a group is limiting their exposure to buyers. When in reality, the likelihood of a non-member using the groups to search for their next artwork purchase is very slim. Many wish groups to be more interactive and participatory, however they are at odds against those who have no desire for this and simply want a place to sort their images. If we had an image categorization method, independent of keywords, buyers would have an easier way to locate the artwork they are searching for. A buyer would have the option to choose (for example) Photography – Nature – Flowers and would then be presented with all flower images, regardless of what group that image belongs to. I think that with this system in place, groups would be much more likely to become what I see they were meant to be: Communities of like-minded artists that wish to participate together and share a passion for a particular artistic subject or medium. This categorization feature, to me, is one of the most essential features that RB could implement. Most importantly, it would facilitate buyers in making their way through the multitude of images on the website and secondly I believe that when members understand that groups are not meant for categorizing their artwork for buyers, it would go a long way to solving many of the issues we are seeing with groups.

  • “How to Create a Clickable Button” / by Karön Melillo d’Vega This is a “flyer” artwork i created in writing and my effort to describe how to create a “Clickable Button” which you can add to your RedBubble profile. A clickable button can be added on your profile which people can click onto and will directly link them to your works and art in specific categories which you have designed the button for. For those who do not have time to browse your pages in your portfolio, a clickable button on your profile home page is a very useful tool. I hope you find this useful and helpful.

Whilst many are joining RB groups in droves, yes, I left a whole plethora of RB groups this evening. Why? 1. Many I joined purely so I could see what was being uploaded. / It was an easy way to your artwork as it appeared online. But now I find I have less time to sit here perusing galleries for hours on end. I have work going on in the background, images in stages of illumination, degradation and highlighting, plus articles to write (and not just for Redbubble!), and I have an active offline-photo-life. Oh, and a wife, day-job, and have realised that sleep really does help me to live better! (So no more 28hour stints devoted to RB!) / But I continue to peruse the art of those people I have faved … because they inspire, teach, and enthuse me to be as good as them! 2. I’ve discovered that I can use the TAGS to find the photographs that appeal to me. / Much like a search-engine, I can find and see so much more when I seek out particular words. Consequently, I’ll actually see a lot more of what’s going on around Redbubble by NOT restricting myself to particular groups. Cool! 3. Aaargh, moderators, PLEASE curb your enthusiasm for BULK bubble-mails. / Recently I was forced to turn on my bubble-mail due to my Moderator status with Adelaide/SA . Hotdang, you people like to tell the world some of the silliest stuff. I’m so glad I don’t have to read, “Today’s avatar is by…” ever again! (PS. Changing group avatars (chopped square photograph) is like changing a business logo every fortnight.) / BTW, I rarely bulk bubble-mail the Adelaide/SA members … We have a Forum !! Since I cannot turn off my Bubble-mail, leaving has been the best next option. 4. NOT BECAUSE OF ANYONE’S ART! / Let it be said that I’m the first person to stand up and applaud the amazing quality of work being uploaded to RB every day! So let it be understood that I will continue to notice the grandeous genres, the contagious collaborations, the post-production manipulation of multiple images and/or enhanced entomology, and the ongoing ogling of homo-sapien’s. Does any of that make any sense? Anyhow, there must be a trillion RB groups out there now. Heck, I may rejoin a few of those groups as time goes by. BUT for now I’m off to search your tags and categories … ..... .... ... Ah, the return of binary harmony is easy on the ears…

  • My RedBubble Wish List .....Categories, Comments etc.,

RB are always looking for suggestions and I suggested the following in one of the threads at the main RB forums. I’ve received some mail in support of this and thought I’d post a Journal entry in the hopes of catching RB’s attention. Categories I’d like to see categories on both the home page of RB and our own home page. When uploading your image you would be presented with a drop down menu that has the different categories, simply click this and it will automatically go into the correct folder. If anyone has had anything to do with the Coppermine Photo Galleries, this will be very familiar to you. The categories could go something like this …. any suggestions welcome here folks. Writing – Clothing – Artwork – Landscapes – Portraits – Animals – Macro – Other – Nature ….. or something similar, I’ve probably missed a few from that. Comments I think that comments we post on people’s work should only be seen by members of the RB community. Visitors – read potential buyers for visitors – should not have access to the RB main forums either. I believe this will keep the ‘integrity’ of RB more along the lines that it appears to aspire to. Anyways, that’s my two cents worth and I’d appreciate any feedback on this.

Just in case anyone else needs this, you can find the instructions to make categories and links for your categories in a text file on my server. This makes it easier to see the code because it cuts out RB’s mark-up parser. Hope this helps!

Phew. I’ve been working at ‘re-looking’ at my cards from a different perspective … a more ‘marketable’ one! Not easy to do really … being objective about one’s work, well … Anyway, I’ve made a few changes, a few additions, some new angles to the same cards. I’m hoping that Red Bubble will eventually provide some way in which we can categorise the cards, i.e. Holidays, Events, Floral, Abstract, Thank You, etc etc ad infinitum. Red Bubble? I’ve been so busy sorting out my present wee body of work and getting a database down and trying to set up a small new business (TONS of work there!) that, ironically,I’ve hardly had time to sit and draw - how do you folks manage to do it all?! There just aren’t those hours in the day, where are they? My brains are still relatively addled from lack of sleep and computer-screen-itis, so forgive the ramble. Perhaps I’ll soon be able to relax again and enjoy looking at all your wonderful artwork. Cheers!
