Cataract Gorge, Launceston Tasmania
Captured at the Cataract Gorge, Tas, Australia
This waterfall is located in the Great Smoky Mountains, only time to see it this full is after a good hard rain. I shot this holding my umbrella that day to protect my camera

Duck Reach Power Station in Cataract Gorge Launceston was the first publicly owned hydro-electric plant in the Southern Hemisphere, and provided the Tasmanian city of Launceston with hydro-electric power from its construction in 1895 to its closure in 1955. Built in 1880, the historic Kings Bridge spans the swirling waters of the junction of three rivers in the heart of Launceston, Tasmania. The bridge neatly frames the last few metres of the South Esk River which flows through Cataract Gorge then down over the last few boulders on the river bed into the Tamar River and out to the white-capped waters of Bass Strait.
Our local special place where I have spent many hours. From a child to an adult the Gorge has held lots of memories. Tis 10 mins walk from the city of Launceston and one of the highlights photographically is this suspension “swinging” bridge built many a year ago. This bridge makes it possible to cross the south esk river so both sides can be accessed. This South Esk meets the North Esk to create the Tamar River that Launceston has been built around. Taken early one morning as the fog was lifting and the reflections were still visible in the first basin before the breeze started. This image is made up of three images stitched together and you can just see a tiny section of the chairlift that travels across on the right. Tis the widest span of chairlift in the world.

/ On its way down to the / North Sea the stream / passes many greater / and smaller falls.
It was 10am in the morning when I took this shot and because where I was standing was in the shade it couldn’t have been more than 2°C at the time! Even looking at the image reminds me of how freezing cold I was! :-)
Blossom’s_Photo_Gallery Alexandra Suspension Bridge If you are feeling a little adventurous, cross the Gorge on what is known locally as “The Swinging Bridge”! This masterful piece of 19th century engineering was opened in 1904. It was washed away by the Great Flood of 1929 but restored a few years later. The bridge was named after Queen Alexandra, consort to King Edward VII. Crossing it will provide you with fine views on both sides of the gorge. From near the bridge, you can make your way up to either the Alexandra Lookout or the Cataract Lookout for a birds eye view. For those still keen to walk on, it is possible to continue on walking tracks to reach the Second Basin further up in the gorge, as well as Duck Reach – 45 minutes each way. (Duck Reach is the site of the first municipal hydroelectric power station in Australia and had provided power from 1895 to 1955) Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. A different version of the cloudy one. With a blue sky and again merged from three images and cropped to create the panorama effect. Taken at the Launceston Cataract Gorge First Basin. A view towards the suspension bridge and cliff grounds reserve.
