WILD & FREE / / Honey (named after the colour of her eyes) and her three cubs were very obliging to rest on this ridge whilst they scanned the plains for breakfast. Taken in the Masai Mara early one morning about half an hour after sunrise, this is one of my favourite images and I find myself always coming back to it. / / (Masai Mara – Kenya) / / The world’s fastest land animal, the cheetah, is a unique and the most specialized member of the cat family and can reach speeds of 70 mph. Unlike other cats, the cheetah has a leaner body, longer legs, and has been referred to as the greyhound of the cats. It is not an aggressive animal, using flight versus fight. With its weak jaws and small teeth, the price it paid for speed, it cannot fight larger predators to protect its kill or young. The cheetah was once a common animal found on five continents, but is slowly losing its race for survival and is now classed as an Endangered Species! This is probably the last of my kitty pix as I just got bored taking pictures of them once their voices dropped. And that’s probably why they treat me with total indifference these days. In fact, just the other day Scratch finished his water (we don’t give him milk because he never deserves it), looked up at me and said: “SillyBoy… or whatever they call you on that bubble thing… you could have been great if you’d just kept on shooting us…” So I told him I’d shoot him if he didn’t shut up. This is Scratch, from the same shoot as CAT in BW. He’s a pedigree Blue Point and he knows it and has since grown to be a total pain in the butt. Our other Siamese is Pepsi who is a dime a dozen Apple Head and doesn’t know it and is totally OK. But he’s not as photogenic. Such is life. Grin & bear it!

The maneki neko is a popular Japanese sculpture that is believed to bring good luck to its owner. Often used in businesses – A raised left paw attracts customers while a raised right paw supposedly attracts money. Also know as the Money Cat it is a symbolic ornament that offers people hope that they will achieve wealth and success. We all know that these ornamental pieces don’t directly produce what they promise. What they do offer is a symbol that you can look at when your feeling beaten. Having one in a highly visible place can give you a constant beacon of light that makes you persevere on something that may at times feel too hard. Meet Bell Bottoms…we rescued our little buddy about 6 years ago…and to this day is one of the most sweetest silliest kitties ever!!

Close up shot of one of our many “barn kitties”. Dubbed that since we have a barn on the acreage and they sleep in it in the winter. :) They’re technically not our cats, since the mother was dumped out here a few years ago and the father is a stray from who knows where. This little guy is part of their second litter.

Watching 100’s of people come and go at the lion section of Dubbo Zoo paid off, after sleeping all day, they started walking around. When he stood over her, and both looked our way, I was in awe with the treat they were giving me for my patience!
