I am going to take a moment to toot my own horn, not something I do on a regular basis. I have just received the final pdf proof for a promotional calendar for 2008 that will be distributed at the University of Missouri and throughout the world to faculty, friends, alumni, and students to increase awareness for wild tiger conservation! The calendar features only photography of yours truly throughout, and so in a sense it is like having a solo gallery show! As many conservation saavy individuals might already know, the tiger in the wild is one of the iconic symbols of endangered species worldwide, numerous organizations have been created to focus on increasing awareness on all of the tiger species worldwide and their precipitous decline towards extinction. All tiger species in the wild are endangered, some more severely than others. Several sub-species have already been lost. You can read more about the first of it’s kind “Tigers 4 Tigers” program started at the University of MIssouri by going here MizzouT4T The two images I I have posted in this message are the opening page of the inside of the calendar as well as the back page of the calendar that talks about me personally and my work. I ask that when you have time you visit the T4T page and read about the program, and if you feel so inclined offer a donation to either T4T, or any other conservation effort, globally or locally, because there is always more that needs to be done to preserve the beauty that exists in the world! Thank you all for listening to me, it is truly an honor to have been a part of this worthy project, and it is exactly the type of conservation effort that weds real on the ground work with the beauty of art that can help stem the tide of the rapid decline of magnificent creatures like the tiger in the wild! So, yes. I just found out my cat, Frodo, has some sort of eye cancer. Took him the the vet this am. Dropped him off. The Dr. sedated him and took a smear of the small mass on his eye. The small mass started out as a scratch. Which we tried to treat with antibiotics. We took him in for a recheck where they were going to clean his eye and remove the debris. Well unfortunetly all they did was clean it and give him another medicine. / / A week later, today… They say it is some sort of cancer. They will send off the smear and let use know results within a week or so…Depending on the results he may lose his eye. I will update this journal entry once I know something. I may be taking him to his old vet for a second opinion next week. I am praying for the best. With or without his eye, he is still a handsome boy.

I want to commission a sculptor that can create a lifelike outdoor sculpture of me. I want it completed by my 50th birthday in May 2010. I live in Newcastle NSW so it would be good to have someone close. I want it to look like my “Pieta” photograph of me kneeling nude on the floor cradling my Siamese cat. I have angel wings. Bubble mail me if you are interested or know of someone.

And we’re back! With interview number 20, no less! A minor milestone. And what better way to celebrate, than with the aptly named / Superteam: Non-Stop / Whose Wrestle Cat stole the hearts of hundreds in this year’s Comikaze 24 hour challenge. / Read the comic here Where did Wrestle Cat come from? Where is he going? He follows the lead of my favourite superheroic animals such as Beppo the / Superchimp and Ace the Bat-Hound from back in the day. I love the idea of Batman putting a mask on a dog and thinking it is a good idea. Fiasco Bombasco had the same idea with his cat due to his love of wrestiling plus of course his taking so many punches to the head. Fiasco’s dream is for Wrestle Cat to become World Wrestling Champ (pets division). This dream is at odds with Wrestle Cat’s own ambitions of a life full of sleeping, eating and playing with rolled up plastic bags (he likes the sound they make against his paws). If you could have a knock-down drag out wrestle with someone, who would it be? I would only wrestle purely for entertainment so I would choose Andre the Giant. Modern professional wrestling is a bit too homoerotic for me to watch comfortably. Instead of characters like George “The Animal” Steele, Rowdy Roddy Piper and The Iron Shiek it’s all oiled down buff pretty men. Homoerotic sports definitely have their place but that place is Football. / A cage match between a bearded pot-bellied cartoonist and the reanimated corpse of Andre the Giant is what we need to have wrestling be interesting again. Did you know Andre the Giant never stopped growing until he died? Imagine if he is still growing! What inspired you throughout your young life? What are the major tentpole / moments, turning points, or influences, etc. that have made you who you are today? The earliest turning point I can remember is reading the tiny comic that came with the Super Powers Green Lantern toy I got from Kmart when I was seven years old. It was the first comic I remember reading and it blew my mind that you could tell a story with so many drawings and ended up spending a lot of time doing just that at home with the encouragement of my older brothers. A few years back I met David Dellafiora (aka Field Study) and Glen Smith (aka nofrillsart) through a few art projects and programs and they were instrumental in me getting into action and actually producing and selling my art and comics with their guidance. And relatively recently, participating in the Daily Grind Iron Man Challenge had a huge amount of influence on my work. Drawing and posting comics online daily and getting feedback was fantastic while it lasted and really made me push myself and see what I can do. It was so encouraging being amongst so many talented cartoonists who ended up being my friends. What’s awesome about comics? Why do you make them? Comics were such a large part of my upbringing and are still such a part of my life still that it still suprises me when others don’t share that bond. For me they are my main source of entertainment and inspiration well above television, movies and books. It only makes sense to me that if you love something so much that you want to be a part of it and give something back. What isn’t awesome about comics? It’s the easiest form of visual storytelling out there. How would you survive a zombie invasion? I think my survival would solely depend on information I have retained from zombie comics and films. Firstly, I would collect my local loved ones and head for the nearest pub. Where does a guy even get guns from in real life? I’m sure one of my friends would know. I bet my dad could make some kick arse weapons! Also, I live in the town of Lara, Victoria. The zombie invasion could have started weeks ago and I wouldn’t have noticed. What are some of the coolest things that have inspired you this year thus far? I went to Supanova Perth along with my fellow Monster and Robot members Edward J. Grug III and Jessica McLeod and I had the hugest sensory overload ever. I saw children dressed as superheroes at Supernova, saw Galapogas Tortoises getting fed at the zoo and got to touch a tiny shark and some rays. The whole time just inspired a need to create again and I’m still riding that high. Also, they have totally different icecreams over there! They have Drumsticks but they call them ‘Trumpets’. And remember Memphis Meltdowns? They have them but in different flavours! Plus I drank a bottle of Chilli Cola! What’s your favouritest tshirt ever? I had a bright stripey cross colour tshirt which I had for over ten years and only just recently retired and it’s now the cover for a couch cusion in the garage. It looked kinda like what Ernie from Bert and Ernie wears. My current favourites are my bright green TK Longmire shirt with an octopus on it (looking it up I see it’s no longer available) and my red longsleeve Bandit Ghost shirt from my own redbubble store (it makes me feel kinda superheroic). What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever laughed the longest and/or hardest at? The first thing that comes to mind is the idea of a theme wedding where the couple get married on toilets. To me it’s the ultimate extravagance and if it doesn’t exist somewhere already then surely it will within the next few years. If you could take a musical outfit and turn them into a gang of superheroes, who would you choose? Who would they become? The Beastie Boys! They would be superheroes in the vein of Japanese ultra science heroes like Jet Jaguar or Ultraman as they were in the Intergalactic video and in their down time they would be tuxedo wearing smooth movers like in the Sure Shot video. So, it’s five years from now. What’s been going on? We are sipping cocktails by a pool on the moon! I build myself a penthouse / apartment out of Golden Girls DVDs shortly after my powers manifested. I got contacted by Prime Minister Emdur and was appointed Minister for Adventure, leading to many excursions to the microscopic planet full of Werewolves and Draculas. Also, I own a new type of pet. It is like an elephant but it fits in the palm of your hand. Damn. Now I want one of those too! And can we get a tshirt comp going for the best ‘Emdur for PM’ tshirt? ;oP Thanks Ive! And tune in next week, folks, as we get back to our regularly scheduled weekly updates! Who will it be? Even I don’t know. Oops. There’s something to add to the list for tomorrow… :o[]

OMG – you won’t beleive this, but it’s true I swear! I went down to feed the Mother cat yesterday [about 18 hours ago] and I sat in the area where we had caught the little kitties for about half an hour. The Mother didn’t show, so I dished up a large serving of tuna into her bowl and pushed it under the fence into the bushes for her to get on her return. While walking back to the car, I decided to go take a look in the bin area [the main stray cat food source], just to check that she wasn’t there. I saw a black shape [which turned out to be a rubbish bag under a fan outlet on the building wall], so I gave out a little mew call to see if it would move [as it was a bag, it didn’t LOL]. To my complete suprise, a little tabby kitten, no more than about 5 weeks old, came running out of a bush from the other side of the area [no where near where the other litter had been living], crying to me. He was answering me each time I mewed to him, and wanted to get close. I walked towards him and he shot out under the fence away from me. I walked around to see where he was and he was nowhere to be seen, so I mewed again. He popped his little head up from a bunch of firewood logs under a wooden shelter and then came running to me again, but was too afriad to get too close – this was a tiny little baby. I rushed home, grabbed my coat and a hot water bottle and then went back down and sat it out all through yesterday and last night. He came out to eat, and was answering me when I made a noise. He sat on my lap, but ran if I moved – this went on for hours and hours and I just kept building up the trust. A tom cat came along [interested in the tuna] and bullied the little one a little back into his log pile, so I moved well away to check out if Mom would return – but she didnt, and he was out in the car park calling for ages. I went back and he ran to me – it was clear this little one was all alone. So – he is here now as well, and is already being handled. I have to go out now to buy a suitable cage for him as the other kittens are in the large cage and the one I have him in now is too small for him to get any exercise. He can come out in the evenings when the baby is in bed and I can put my Tomcat out, but not during the day. This little one is so beautiful, and so small, he fits into my cupped hands.

A few months ago, I was looking through some of the RedBubble artwork, when I came across Elaine’s photo of a big pile of syringes. Intrigued, I read the story that went along with the photo. Elaine’s cat had converted from being insulin dependant to a normal cat. She helped facilitate the conversion by putting her cat on a much different diet than what the vet had recommended. / I contacted Elaine about this because I had a cat that was insulin dependent and barely able to walk from the symptoms of diabetes (down on his hocks from diabetic neuropathy). Elaine was kind enough to give me all the information that she had researched on cat diabetes and diet. / Using the guidelines that Elaine gave me, we drastically changed our cats diet. Here is the update on my diabetic cat: / Since we started the mostly meat diet, he has completely done a turn around. He is walking and running normally (no longer down on his hocks). He is starting to convert out of diabetes (something that cats can do, but not humans). We are in the process of weaning the insulin off. The vet was pretty surprised when we showed him the diet we have had him on. All the food we are feeding is organic. Chicken, salmon, tuna (not his favorite) and turkey are his mainstay. Once in a blue moon we give hamburger or steak as a treat. We feed him 4-6 smaller meals a day, plus he has a choice of having his dry food. He doesn’t eat much in the way of dry food however. / My other 2 cats are on the same diet for their health. If it weren’t for Elaine’s heads up on changing the diet for our cat, he would not be around today. The vet had estimated that he had less than 6 months to live. Now he is back to being a healthy, active, in your face cat. / Elaine’s image is a great example how art can impact lives. Her photograph was a statement that could have many meanings to different people. Many times we will never know how our art impacts people. That is why I am taking the time to write a thank you to Elaine. / So, to Elaine, a big thank you! / Cheers, / Deri

These two little ones went off to their new home last night. I know how brilliant this is, but I had spent to much time with them this last week, I miss them so! They are only living a small drive away so I will be able to see them now and then and keep updated to their progress, but I miss them so! I went swimming last night for a few hours after dropping them off – to try and take my mind off them – but I miss them so! I got up this morning with no little mews for food, and no little eyes peering at me – I miss them so! I will be going tonight to try and catch their siblings and Mother, that will help me to not think about them so much – but I will still miss them so!

Hmmmm, I have had rather an eventful evening. My sister rang me from the restaurant where she had dinner this evening – just a ten minute walk away from me. She said she could hear kittens crying in bushes by the beer garden. so off I went, equipped with kitten food and a cat carrier. We sat just by the side of the bushes and I placed some food out onto dishes on a small lawn area. After about ten minutes – the first little pair of eyes appeared under the bushes, then another, then two more. Within minutes there were four little babies tucking into some supper [well squabbling over it would be more of a correct way of putting it]. They all ate their fill, and had a little look at the cat box close up, then just relaxed. I would say that they are about 6 – 7 weeks old – almost independant, but I was a little concerned about Mum and whether she has already abandoned these little ones. The bushes lead out on the other side onto a very busy road, so time is short. I decided to leave them there tonight in the hope of catching sight of Mum in the morning, but as I was going back to my car – I saw her going into the bushes from the road, so she is still with them. I have already been on the phone for an hour or two and found homes for these babes and Mum – now all I have to do is catch all five of them in the morning – gasp!

Well, the last two kitties [the ones which were older when I caught them, so were much harder to tame], have gone to their new home, and what a fantastic home it is too. They are going to be spoiled rotten by a young couple, who live in a lovely location, far from busy roads and who have no children yet. I stayed for an hour or two while dropping them off, and they were already venturing up onto the plush cat gym platforms that had been bought ready for them, and they even went onto the young womans lap – it was brilliant. I will miss them a lot, because due to their age, I had to handle them a lot to get them used to humans, and I grew very fond of them. But, I know these two are going to love their new lives at their new home – they went as a pair :) Here they are just before they left. I may just have a bit more time for the bubble now :)
