This series was shot the day before Fall. / My cat, Tybalt had just died that morning, (14 years old). Together with my extreme dissatisfaction with taking pictures of the normal and everyday, I found my grief pulling my gaze upwards. Straight up. / Standing directly under the edges of these gigantic trees I shot from the ground through the leaves directly straight up into the sky. / The lower the leaves, that darker they are. The higher the leaves, the brighter they are. The effect was caused by the sun setting behind a hill. / These where very very tall trees, (see number one for size comparison), so the very tips of the branches and leaves are what caught the fading light. / At the end of this road, as will all roads, life is for the living. The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of 30 to 50% over the past two decades in its African range; populations are untenable outside designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not well-understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. Lions have been kept in menageries since Roman times and have been a key species sought after and exhibited in zoos the world over since the late eighteenth century. Zoos are cooperating worldwide in breeding programs for the endangered Asiatic subspecies. The Fractalius Filter was applied to this image to achieve these results.

Fred and Frank in a rare moment of peacefulness, as we all enjoyed some winter sunshine out in the hills, away from any disturbances. This is why I live where I live :-) All profit from the sale of this work donated to Wildlife Appeal.

I created this for a challenge and then decided to add the song because it’s from one of my favorite musicals: “Cats”! / December 15, 2009 Memory from the musical Cats / Musical “Cats” – Memory Lyrics Daylight / See the dew on the sunflower / And a rose that is fading / Roses whither away / Like the sunflower / I yearn to turn my face to the dawn / I am waiting for the day . . . Midnight / Not a sound from the pavement / Has the moon lost her memory? / She is smiling alone / In the lamplight / The withered leaves collect at my feet / And the wind begins to moan Memory / All alone in the moonlight / I can smile at the old days / I was beautiful then / I remember the time I knew what happiness was / Let the memory live again Every streetlamp / Seems to beat a fatalistic warning / Someone mutters / And the streetlamp gutters / And soon it will be morning Daylight / I must wait for the sunrise / I must think of a new life / And I musn’t give in / When the dawn comes / Tonight will be a memory too / And a new day will begin Burnt out ends of smoky days / The stale cold smell of morning / The streetlamp dies, another night is over / Another day is dawning Touch me / It’s so easy to leave me / All alone with the memory / Of my days in the sun / If you touch me / You’ll understand what happiness is Look / A new day has begun.
