  • DETAIL: “The Studio & Spirits Dream” Oil on Canvas. / I spent the last decade uprooted and on the road. I landed in a barn for awhile on a millionaire’s horse ranch, eventually turning the tack room into a studio that was liveable, enabling me to move out of the ranch’s bunkhouse (12 X 12 foot room with sink) and take up barn residence. It was a wonderful place for 4 years with horse pasture – about 200 occupants – out the door. Goats, sheep, mule named Corizon and Rambo the Ram in stalls and paddock on the other side, the Santa Lucia range all misty , mooned, sunned, gusted, and Milky Wayed before me. And it was the first functional studio I’d had in years. I wrote. And I painted. / This dream, this studio I painted there, is crowded with things I loved and hadn’t seen in ages, stored on the other side of America. Over filled with people I’d loved who’d died. With animals alive and not, who still owned my heart. With a chair from my twenties that no longer existed and the dream of my own bed again where such dreams could populate my nights. The cats who survived the move from Brooklyn then to Virginia’s wilderness then across country are on my bed, and some who departed before we got there, here too. My wonderful chocolate Lab – Rodin – is on alert at the bed’s end. A woodstove I’d seen once that would restore life to this heatless barn (I eventually got a kerosene heater). Some of my many thousands of books I carry with me that prop up my life are here, and all the intimate angels swinging through the undone work, the ready easel, the heart’s workplace. • Sometimes when you have to have a donut, you HAVE to have a donut. Emmet* and his grumpy cat, Otis, have embarked on a quest for a tasty morning snack. Emmet’s Teacup Racer features a teaspoon handbrake and back propellor (in case of flood). The parasol sunshade with aftermarket compass just add to the luxury. Otis is being towed behind in his Teapot Buggy with turning wheels and spinning propellor because, let’s face it – cats can’t drive. Besides, he wants to keep an eye on the fascinating Fish Transport operation overhead. / *Actually my great uncle Joe, as a child. This original artwork is copyright Ramona Szczerba 2008. • Original watercolor and inkline depiction of “The Queen of Wands” tarot card designed for an Art Nouveau deck. I designed this piece as part of a proposal for an all-female tarot card deck to be depicted in an art nouveau style. I also wanted the women to have different ethnicities depending on suit and for the deck to combine astrological (signs) and wiccan (elements, Four Directions, seasons) components into each card in a meaningful way. I see Wands as a Fire suit, with a Southern direction, situated at noon during a blazing summer. Wands signify the spark of creativity, energy and growth, and I wanted my Queen of Wands to be truly regal and somewhat fierce. Believe me, I had no idea when I painted her that she would end up looking so much like our First Lady! She says, “I Am”, “I Will” and “I Know”. I envisioned all the women in the Wands suit as being African, and this Queen is seated in her throne with her sunflower amidst the most creative of endeavors ever: the pyramids. Her wand is carved with the zodiac symbols Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. All wands are depicted in hot colors and earth tones. This original artwork is copyright Ramona Szczerba 2006. • Neither of us did the “clothing thing” when using the filtered light of blinds. The obvious comparisons simply have to be made so be kind and remember this IS just a kitten. :_D You’d never believe that tiny kitten was playing ferociously less than 3 minutes before the lighting became fun. I asked her to come to and she did. She looked up at me while we were both sitting on the couch (where she is seen here). I reached a good distance away and brought the NIkon D90 out of its case. She sat next to me and watched. I took off the lens cap stood up squatted in front of her with the camera aimed her way to get the light settings. Jasper sat there quietly. Once the stripes started making patterns on her face, she got a little antsy because the direct sunlight wasn’t comfortable. I got her to face away from the direct glare with a hand moved to the side of the camera; her eyes followed it as though it was the most interesting thing on the planet. I think I shot 50 images before I got bored. Jasper didn’t. But immediately after I set down the camera and stood up, her eyes perked up, pointy ears gave me full attention, and she ran to find a toy mouse. She didn’t even need to hear me say “bring it to me cuz you’re playing ‘fetch’, not me!” This cat is gonna be waaaaaaaaaaayyy too much fun. She was born with a lifetime license to charm! :-D About the shot… This is direct from the camera. I used some of the onboard editing options and compared the results with the best I could do with LightRoom. Nothing seemed particularly better so having an “as is” shot seemed like the most interesting way to go. And I consider this one “as is” even tho the exposure was automatically enhanced using onboard D-lighting and enlarged for Red Bubble prints using Elements 3. NIkkor 18 – 105 mm lens / f-stop: 4.5 / full manual control with 1/3 bracketing (under/even/over) / exposure 1/30 / ISO: 200 (the baseline for Nikon D90’s) / metering mode: spot / focal length: 22mm / exposure bias: -1.3 The sun, courtesy God, was setting thru the livingroom blinds and over the town of Penn Valley, California. Yes, I knew the cat’s eye in the direct light would be slightly squinted. I thought about saying I planned that so she’s look more sly. Then I woke up. Generously featured in the Paws & Claws Group featured in Nikon D90 Users Group with the deepest appreciation!

  • Sekhmet means “The Mighty One.” Sister Goddess to Bast, the lion-headed Sekhmet was the avenger / warrior Goddess in ancient Egypt and one of the most powerful of the Egyptian mythological gods and goddesses. She embodied the destructive force of the sun and she meted out divine punishment on behalf of the gods and the pharoahs. Conversely, she was also a goddess of healing and of surgery and medicines. She is usually depicted in red dress to denote her avenging nature and she is also known as the “Eye of Ra”. Original artwork measures 12.5×19 inches and was created with liquid copper leaf, gold paint pen, oil pastels, colored pencils, black art marker on heavy textured Strathmore paper. This artwork is a companion piece to my depiction of Sekhmet’s gentler sister Bast Bast of the Rising Sun View more of my artwork online at www.lynnetteshelley.com
