my cat
Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional Japanese poetry. Haiku is, today, a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables.

This is the story about Falcon’s dramatic start in life…. / Falcon is one of our four cats. He had a rough start, but he made it and is now a healthy, strong cat! / I love all our cats, but Falcon is my sweetest little darling, just because he had so much to conquer before starting a normal kitty life. / What I have written here, is straight from the heart and completely the truth as things went then.
Sleeping cat, / Dreaming of stars…
This is the original ‘Sleeping Cat’ poem I wrote in 1999. These nine lines were the seed that would lead me to begin my cat painting journey two years later. The poem was originally titled ‘Sleeping Cats’ but I renamed it to ‘The Dream Chaser’ four years later when I revisited the text and expanded it with more verses. The extra verses became a second poem called Catching the Stars The Dream Chaser was the name of my very first cat painting, featuring my uniquely styled cat face, created in 2002. Catching a star, / Is a difficult thing, / They dare not get close, / To the cat who is king…
These verses were originally meant to be additional verses to my 1999 poem The Dream Chaser but although they address a similar theme I felt they evoked much more active imagery. Hence I separated them into a poem in their own right. The poem contemplates the stars from a cats point of view (how does a cat perceive the stars?) believing those little twinkling specks could be chased if they could be reached. By the time I wrote this poem I had already created two cat artworks, The Dream Chaser and, a year later, The Watcher both inspired by the first poem. I felt these two artworks were quite strong and wanted to produce more paintings but those original nine lines weren’t enough to keep my imagination going. I sat down and wrote ‘Catching the Stars’ and used it as inspiration for seven more cat themed artworks which I exhibited online in 2004-2005 for three months on their own dedicated exhibition web site called ‘Sleeping Cats’.
