  • Lord of the Indian Jungles, The Royal Bengal Tiger, Portrait The Bengal Tiger, or Royal Bengal is a subspecies of tiger primarily found in Bangladesh, India, and also Nepal, Pakistan, Bhutan, Myanmar and southern Tibet. It is the most common tiger subspecies, living in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, subtropical and tropical rain forests, scrub forests, wet and dry deciduous forests, and mangroves. Since the early 1990s the tiger population has begun to decline again, due to habitat destruction and large-scale poaching for tiger skins and bones. The Bangladeshi government is trying hard to show the world that the tiger is thriving in Bangladesh, often using controversial techniques like taking molds of paw prints to track tiger populations. It was recently discovered that tigers have been wiped out from one of Project Tiger’s leading sanctuaries, Sariska. The current population of wild Bengal tigers in the Indian subcontinent is now estimated to be between 1,300 and 1,500 which is less than half of the previous estimate of 3,000-4,500 tigers. This estimate is based on a state-by-state census conducted in India in 2001. Today’s reports show there are fewer than 200 tigers left in the wild. Habitat losses and the extremely large scale incidences of poaching are serious threats to species survival. Poachers kill tigers not only for their pelts, but also for body parts used to make various traditional East Asian medicines. Other factors contributing to their loss are urbanization and revenge killing. Farmers blame tigers for killing cattle and will shoot them. Poachers also kill tigers for their bones and teeth to make medicines that are alleged to provide the tiger’s strength. The hunting for Chinese medicine and fur is the biggest cause of decline of the tigers. In India, retired Indian Army personnel are being recruited to save the Bengal tiger from poaching gangs.

  • My little kitty, who isn’t so little any more. I found this lovely kitty in the bushes on the side of Gumby’s Pizza next door to where I used to work. I went outside and heard this loud repeating noise, kind of sounded like a cat I guess. So I looked around and finally saw her. She was so young her eyes had just opened, I guess she was a week old at the most. I waited a little bit to see if her momma cat would come by, but nothing happened so I picked her up and saved her little life. I guess she has 8 more to go…

  • The leopard (IPA: [lɛpɚd]; Panthera pardus) is an Old World mammal of the Felidae family and the smallest of the four big cats in the genus Panthera, the other three are the tiger, lion and jaguar. Once distributed across southern Asia and Africa, from Korea to South Africa, the leopard’s range of distribution has decreased radically over time because of a variety of factors, including human influence, and the leopard now chiefly occurs in sub-Saharan Africa. There are fragmented populations in India, Indochina, Malaysia, and China. Despite the loss of range and continual declines in population, the cat remains a “Least Concern” species; its numbers are greater than that of the other Panthera species, all of which face more acute conservation concerns. The leopard has relatively short legs and a long body, with a large skull. Physically, it most closely resembles the jaguar, although it is usually smaller and of slighter build. Its fur is marked with rosettes which lack internal spots, unlike those of the jaguar. Leopards that are melanistic, either completely black or very dark in coloration, are one of the big cats known colloquially as black panthers. The species’ success in the wild owes in part to its opportunistic hunting behaviour, its adaptability to a variety of habitats and its ability to move at up to approximately 60 kilometres (37 miles) an hour. The leopard consumes virtually any animal it can hunt down and catch. Its preferred habitat ranges from rainforest to desert terrains. Its ecological role and status resembles that of the similarly-sized cougar in the Americas.

  • THE RHINOCEROS, often colloquially abbreviated rhino, is a name used to group five extant species of odd-toed ungulates in the family Rhinocerotidae. Two of these species are native to Africa and three to southern Asia. Three of the five species—the Javan, Sumatran and Black Rhinoceros—are critically endangered. The Indian is endangered, with fewer than 2,700 individuals remaining in the wild. The White is registered as Vulnerable, with over 9,000 remaining in the wild.

  • This is my black persian, Persia. I rescued her from a high-kill shelter of November of 2008. GOOD THING! She is a breathtakinly beautiful creature that has the friendliest nature. She is a bit hard to photograph as she is very active but I did manage to get this fantastic photo of her. In my editing of this photo I basically opened it up in Bridge in Photoshop and enhanced and darkened the black ( fur). I then proceeded to make a copy of the image and softened the background. A little bit of highlighting on her eyes and this is the final, finished product. This photograph is October in my Persian Cats and Kittens Calendar
