I’ve finally had a chance to add a few images to my portfolio, so far only a few of them are available for sale because I need to take bigger pictures or ones of the final artwork that actually has my signature on it. A few images will remain as “not for sale” because they are commissioned artwork that I do not have permission to profit from print sales. In addition, have three new dog acrylic paintings nearly completed that I will be adding later this week, hopefully. Yep, as you can probably tell, I’m mostly a dog painter. Some people see dead people. Well, I paint dogs. And other animals, specifically pets such as cats and horses, because I am a pet portrait artist, but dogs are my usual subject matter and the major inspiration for my artwork. In approximately May of 2008, I began to have a regular visitor to my back porch, whom I named Smokey. He is a gray & white cat who is quite vocal, territorial, & always ready to get some lovin’ – as long as it’s on HIS terms. I could tell he was starving and began to feed him tuna because that was all I had in my house. My husband & I had a house cat about 1 year prior, but he became fatally ill. We were both still trying to process the loss of our beloved kitty so we had not gotten another one. On June 10, 2008, I began photographically documenting my new friend. On June 19, 2008, I acquired 3 new friends. I named them Mama, Lefty, and Speedy. Mama was so named because she was being trailed by her 2 kittens. The first time I saw Lefty, his back left leg had come out of socket & he was dragging it. (A couple of weeks later, it popped back in of its own accord). Lefty is gray and white, just like Smokey. Speedy was pure black & he truly had speed! Smokey taunted me from afar by posing, rolling on the ground, and rubbing on just about anything he could. Finally, on July 11, 2008 he allowed me to pet him. However, he is truly a male of nature’s kingdom as he made it very clear to me when I was ‘overstepping’ my bounds on petting. I finally went to the store after this & began buying cat food for the strays. Yes, I’m aware that makes me certifiably mad but I couldn’t just let them starve. Spiritual hazard, one could say. Mama was a completely different story. I could not even turn the key to unlock the back door without her fleeing the porch, taking her itty bitties with her. I didn’t see Lefty & Speedy for very long before they disappeared. Over time, I began to develop the opinion that Smokey must have been someone’s pet at one time because he was so much more trusting & loving towards me. I thought that Mama was strictly a feral kitty (wild, not someone’s pet). She would come to the porch & eat but was never keen on allowing human interaction in the slightest, especially not petting. Between July and October, Lefty occasionally came to the porch to eat but was quite skittish & much like Mama still. I haven’t seen him since October & have never been ‘allowed’ to pet him. I had my suspicions that Mama was pregnant yet again because she was so much more mild in her mannerisms but I was not sure. On October 27, 2008, I got my answer. She presented to my porch that night with a litter of 2 new kitties, which had to be at least 4 weeks old by then. One looks exactly like her & I named her Caramel. The other is orange & white striped & I named her Pumpkin (probably given the close proximity to Samhain). After approximately 3 months, on October 30, 2008, Mama finally let me pet her. She was still slightly reluctant but that has gotten better with time. She now comes by every day to eat. She will sometimes sit on my lap & other times just sit next to me & purr & let me pet her. Smokey doesn’t come as often as he used to & he’s been fighting with some of the other neighborhood cats, whom I’ve had rare occasion to document as well (Juniper & Gus-Gus are 2 that I have named, lol). Mama’s new litter plays on & around my porch, paying particular attention to the chairs and my potted soil (which used to inhabit Galium odoratum before it died) plants. However, they will not come close enough for me to pet them. So, my confusion results from the so-called rules of nature. Here are some examples: 1) My vet said mother cats will begin weaning their kittens at 5 weeks, pushing them away for them to go out on their own. However, by guestimation, the kittens are at least 3 months old. She is even still allowing them to nurse occasionally. They play together, show each other love, and she still adamantly calls for them to come eat or to just be where she is. / 2) I thought if Pumpkin & Caramel saw how comfortable Mama is with me that they would eventually allow me to pet them. Perhaps one day they still will. But so far, they are both uninterested in that type of connection. This discrepancy has been displayed many times in nature. There are shows on T.V. where people take care of all kinds of animals whose innate nature to dominate & rule their territory should overcome their imprinting of human parents or even the subsequent bond formed by a human caring for them in a state of injury or ill health. One of these is suggested by the Egyptian sculpture of Sobek-Re and the history surrounding the piece & archeological findings. The history of the piece’s origin (as told by the Louvre) goes back to the Late Period of Egypt during which time it is speculated that priests at Faiyum bred crocodiles and lavished treasures & feasts upon them in order to honor the god Sobek. In 1999, an archeological mission did in fact discover fossilized eggs in a ‘crocodile nursery’ at the Ptolemaic Temple. These and other ponderings have caused me to form the opinion that nature is not so predictable as we suppose. Animals and other co-inhabitants of our planet are capable of a spectrum of behaviors, sometimes far surpassing the limited dimensions we attribute to them. I enjoy nature so much. I hope that everyone in life can connect to nature in some manner, because it is so good for the soul. I have been thinking about doing a calendar of my Kitty Family, such as it is. I may think about that a while longer. Mama & Pumpkin can be seen in my art under the picture ‘Peeking Pumpkin.’ Let me know any interests or thoughts. Blessings, Lucertola
