Cats have highly specialized teeth for the tearing of meat. The premolar and first molar together compose the carnassial pair on each side of the mouth, which efficiently functions to shear meat like a pair of scissors. While this is present in canids, it is highly developed in felines. The cat’s tongue has sharp spines, or papillae, useful for retaining and ripping flesh from a carcass. These papillae are small backward-facing hooks that contain keratin which also assist in their grooming. As facilitated by their oral structure, cats use a variety of vocalizations and types of body language for communication, including mewing (“meow” or “miaow”), purring, hissing, growling, squeaking, chirping, clicking, and grunting.(wikipedia.org)

The second shot in my Jaguar series. This time Boris the Jaguar is just looking at me. Soon after they moved him into the feeding area. I hope he doesn’t start equating me to food but I think that is on his mind. Did you know that jaguars have no animal except man who preys on them. Jaguars are a modest size big cat but in their environment they are an alpha predator.

One of my kitties, Miss Mousie, on the bed this morning. She loves the pink snuggle rug (as do I) as it is sooooo soft and perfect for a kitty snooze….. Miss Mousie was rescued as a tiny kitten from a batch of unwanted kittens in next door’s backyard, and has grown into a friendly and sociable cat. taken with Panasonic Lumix FZ20 on macro mode / 1/25 sec at F 2.8, ISO 200, -1/3 exp / a hdr treatment applied this work featured in Tabby Time in March 2009

Ragdoll, Seal mitted The Ragdoll is an American cat breed with a medium-length to long, silky, rabbit-like coat. It is best known for its docile and placid temperament and affectionate nature. Ragdolls have a sturdy body with a large frame, proportionate legs, and a soft coat with Siamese-style points. / Ragdolls come in 6 different colors – seal, chocolate, flame, and “dilutes” blue, lilac and cream. There are three different patterns: Pointed (nose, ears, tail and paws in the specific colors & no white), Mitted – white paws, chin and tummy, with or without a blaze (a white line on the face), and Bicolor—white legs, white inverted ‘V’ on the face, white tummy and often white patches on the back. Variations include a three-color “tortie-point” (mottled seal or blue with red present) and lynx (striped pattern on tail, face and points) which can be found in all 3 patterns. / Ragdolls are slow maturing cats; reaching full coat color at two years of age and full size and weight at four years.
